Sale 8029 Lot 22, "Flute-stopper Male Figure," New Guinea, Lower Sepik River, Yuat River, Biwat, 18 ½ inches high By Carter B. Horsley Once again Sotheby's has put its Pre-Columbian Art auction into the same catalogue as its African and Oceanic Art auction. See the separate article on the Pre-Columbian Art auction that occurs at 2PM November 11, 2004. This morning auction November 11, 2004 at Sotheby's of African and Oceanic Art is highlighted by a spectacular flute-stopper from New Guinea, a magnificent Yoruba Ram's Head Altarpiece, an impressive Benin bracelet, and a Kongo power figure. Oceanic Art Lot 22 is a magnificent flute-stopper in the form of a male figure with a fabulous feathered headdress from the Lower Sepik River, Yuat River, Biwat region of New Guinea. According to the catalogue entry for this lot, the Biwat carved "elaborate sacred flutes, haiyang, sometimes up to eight to ten feet in length." "Aggressively stanced figures such as this," it continued, "were inserted at the top of the flute when not it use. It was these flutes which the Biwat themselves considered their most important and sacred objects. Their social, ceremonial and religious significance was tremendous. Although several cults existed, these figures are often considered to be the children of the mother crocodile spirit, a powerful being that performed creative deeds in primeval times and let initiates be reborn by symbolically swallowing and throwing out the candidates."

Excerpt
What is called African art covers a wide range of objects introduced into a historicizing perspective of European values since the eighteenth century. These various "objects" which, perhaps, were not "art" at all, became art by being given, simultaneously, an aesthetic character and a potentiality for producing and possibly reproducing artistic forms. One could wonder whether, understood in their initial form and significance, they would not have created a radical "mise en perspective" of Western culture. V.Y. Mudimbe (1986:4)

Dogon granary shutter
This granary shutter is carved of various iconographic registers. One notices two « sun lizards », a snake ( lebe , the first hogon ) and a water tortoise (symbol of fertility, and guardian of the ginna lineage). The rectangle symbolizes « the pond », one the symbols associated with Dogon cosmogony, and the chevrons on the left the fertilizing rain (and the course of the nommo when they fall on the earth).
Animal representations across a shutter symbolize their collective magical strength ; strength which the Dogon believe is then imparted to the shutter. Origin : Mali (Kani Kombole area)
Type : Architectural components
Ethnic group : Dogon
Material : Thick wood with a deep brown patina Dogon granary shutter This very old small shutter was placed midway up the granary wall. It provided access, throughout the year following harvests, to the goods stored inside (millet, sorghum, rice, corn). The Dogon granaries are narrow, four-sided or round, with a structure made of wood and covered with cob, and generally a thatch roof or a terrace roof (see picture).
The chevrons symbolize the lebe snake, as well as the rain. The central motif represents the origin of the universe, and the four primordial

Ethiopian wins prestigous Biodiversity Leadership Award
In August 2004, winners of eight new Biodiversity Leadership Awards were announced by the Foundations and their panel of nominators. Together, the eight scientists and environmental activists shared US$900,000. The winners search for, find, catalog, and defend diversity in species-rich and biologically endangered parts of Argentina, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Madagascar, New Caledonia, the Philippines, and the United States. Their awards bring the total sum of Leadership Awards since 1996 to US$3.1 Mengistu Wondafrash, who is studying for a MSc at Redaing University, will receive US$180,000 from The Bay Foundation and the Josephine Bay Paul and C. Michael Paul Foundations, which are pioneers in promoting efforts to save biological diversity. The award is testimony to Mengistu's outstanding contribution to environmental conservation in eastern Africa, where he has worked under unfavourable economic and other conditions. Possibly his most significant accomplishment is his work to safeguard the future of the globally precarious White-winged Flufftail ( Sarothrura ayresi ). He has helped create and protect the wetland breeding habitats of the Flufftail, which is believed to number only 750 globally.
