Bangladesh questions bomb blast suspect
A stampede followed the bomb blast DHAKA, Bangladesh Bangladesh police are questioning a student in connection with the bombing of an open-air concert that killed nine people and wounded 26. The blast hit as 2,000 revelers welcomed Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, early Saturday at a park in downtown Dhaka. No one has claimed responsibility but Bangladesh has been struck by a series of general strikes and clashes as a standoff mounts over when the next election will be held. The opposition, which has been pressing for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation to pave the way for early polls, has planned another three-day general strike beginning April 23. Police said on Sunday they suspect the bombing was the work of four young men who lived together in a rented house in Demra, an industrial town near the capital Dhaka. A college student, identified only as Swadhin, was detained late Saturday for questioning. Another suspect is believed to have died in the blast. Two others are among 10 people being treated in two state-run hospitals.

Nine killed in Bangladesh church bombing
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered an investigation into the blast near her hometown DHAKA, Bangladesh A bomb has exploded inside a Catholic church during a Sunday morning service, killing at least nine people and wounding 13 others. "Nine people have been killed and 13 wounded in the blast during the Sunday prayer at Baniarchar Christian mission," said Jawadul Karim, press secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It was not known who was responsible for the blast in the southwest of the country. Karim said Hasina immediately ordered an investigation into the incident and asked army explosive experts to visit the area, which is near her Gopalgonj hometown. Police at Gopalganj said the bomb exploded during a morning prayer session. Baniarchar, about 230 km (145 miles) from Dhaka, has a "large" number of Christian residents, police inspector Shah Alam said. It was believed to be the first bombing at a church in overwhelmingly Muslim Bangladesh.

Tight security for Bangladesh vote
Thousands of troops have been deployed across the country for Monday's poll By staff and wires DHAKA, Bangladesh (CNN) Amid tight security, Bangladeshis went to the polls Monday to vote for a new parliament which in turn will choose a new prime minister. Some 75 million people are eligible to vote after a violent campaign that has left at least 150 dead and hundreds more injured. In an effort to prevent further violence during polling itself more than 50,000 soldiers have been deployed across the country along with over 200,000 police and other security personnel. Voting day has been declared a public holiday with authorities imposing restrictions on the movement of vehicles and ordering cellular phone services shut down as part of their security preparations. Officials said they wanted to stop activists plotting violence with the help of their mobile telephones.

ICBEN 2002

Groundwater in Bangladesh is contaminated with Arsenic, which occurs naturally in alluvial and deltaic sediments.
The first official detection in 1993 and subsequent confirmation after 1995 of high levels of Arsenic in numerous shallow and deep wells in various parts of the country has raised serious health concerns. Recent investigations, though incomplete, confirm that the occurrence of Arsenic in groundwater is more widespread than assumed at first and that it already affects a large number of people. The latest statistics available on the arsenic contamination in groundwater indicates that 59 districts around 85% of the total area of Bangladesh and about 75 million people are at risk. It is estimated that at least 1.2 million people are exposed to Arsenic poisoning with 24 of millions potentially exposed.
The reported number of patients seriously affected by arsenic in drinking water has now risen to 8500 demands extensive research in this field.
