Concert blast kills nine in Bangladesh
Police and fire rescue workers moving bodies DHAKA, Bangladesh A bomb blast at an open-air concert in the Bangladesh capital has killed at least nine people and injured about 50 others, police have confirmed. The explosion early on Saturday rocked the front section of the audience as the concert was being telecast live on local television. A second explosion about 45 minutes later injured a police officer. He was examining a bomb left lying near the explosion site when it went off. A third bomb was found in the park and the area was cordoned off, police said. An army bomb disposal squad was called in and was trying to diffuse it. Seven people were killed instantly, while two others died at two state-run hospitals, doctors said. Several people were critically injured and the death toll was expected to rise, police said. A stampede followed the blast among the 2,000 people who had gathered at Ramna Park in central Dhaka to mark the Bengali New Year. The open nature of the venue saved further tragedy.

Five dead, 100 missing as Bangladesh ferry sinks
DHAKA, Bangladesh Police in Bangladesh say at least five people have been killed and more than 100 are missing after a ferry sank in the southeast of the country. The boat went down in rough waters between the island of Sandwip in the Bay of Bengal and the Bangladeshi mainland. The ferry was believed to have been carrying some 200 passengers when the accident occurred. "Five bodies including two women have been recovered so far, but nearly 100 others are still missing and may have drowned," a police official told Reuters. The official added that a search for the missing has begun. The cause of the sinking is not known. Ferry accidents are frequent in Bangladesh with many vessels carrying far more passengers than they were designed to hold. In the last major marine accident to hit the country in December last year 88 people died when two ferries collided in the southern district of Chandpur. Street children eke out a living in difficult circumstances
By the BBC's Alastair Lawson in Dhaka There has been an alarming rise in the number of street children in the major cities of Bangladesh. The increase is linked to recent figures released by the government which show that the urban population of Bangladesh continues to grow by around nine percent a year. Unemployment strikes hard on women too
The plight of the street children has given domestic and international aid agencies serious cause for concern. It is possible to smell the Demra dump on the east of Dhaka from over a mile away. One of the biggest rubbish dumps in the city, it is a vast area the size of several football pitches. The stench as you walk closer is so over-whelming it is hard for the uninitiated to resist vomiting.

Alliance moves to ease Bangladesh fears
Zia was replaced as prime minister by Hasina in 1996 DHAKA, Bangladesh (CNN) After a preliminary count in parliamentary elections handed a four party alliance led by Khaleda Zia a resounding victory, the former prime minister moved to ease fears Bangladesh would become an Islamic state. Despite an allegiance with three Islamic parties, Zia told reporters that religion would not play a part in her government. "An Islamic republic was not an alliance pledge," she said. The election was expected to be a close race between Zia and Bangladesh's last prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Unofficial results, however, had Zia's coalition winning 203 of 299 parliamentary seats. Hasina's Bangladesh Awami League party was trailing with only 61 seats. Ballots from 17 seats remain uncounted. Preliminary figures show that representatives from the Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Okiya Yote parties had won 17 of Zia's coalition's 203 seats, the Associated Press reported.
