Double-click on any word and see its definition from Cambridge Dictionaries Online Read the article and then do an activity The government estimated that the total cost of the damage could exceed US$3,000 million. Many of the victims were in the south-eastern districts around Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, and unofficial reports indicated that up to 10,000,000 people had been made homeless. Fears of a higher death toll were compounded after reports indicated that up to 4,000,000 people risked death from starvation. Relief efforts during May were severely hampered by fresh gales on May 6-13 and widespread flooding in the north-east, storms in the coastal district of Barisal on May 20, and heavy rains and floods on May 25-26 around Sylhet in the north-east. Deaths directly attributed to these new disasters totalled some 400, while many hundreds of thousands were left homeless, without food, or without clean drinking water.

In 1526 the region of Bengalen becomes part of the Empire of the Great Mogul . Colonists from the Netherlands, France and Britain arrive in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. By the end of the 17th century, the British presence on the Indian subcontinent is centered in Calcutta. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the British gradually extended their commercial contacts and administrative control beyond Calcutta to Bengal. In 1859 the British Crown replaces the East India Company, extending British dominion from Bengal, which became a region of British India , in the east to the Indus River in the west. Moslim Indians form in 1885 the All-India Muslem League. Originally it supports the strive of India for independence. In 1919 limited forms of self-government are introduced, this is somewhat enlarged in 1935. At the same time most moslims demand a separate moslim state. The United Kingdom grants India self-government in 1947: India is partitioned into the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan . Pakistan exists out of two areas: West-Pakistan and East Pakistan, far from the rest of the country in the east of Bengal. The separation in states means also the division of Bengal. Pakistan is a parliamentary democracy and Muhammad Ali Jinnah becomes the first governor general. He is assasinated in 1948. The first prime minister is Liaquat Ali Khan of the ML is succeeded in 1951 by Khwaja Nazimuddin, in 1953 by Mohammad Ali Bogra and in 1956 by Chaudhry Mohammad Ali.

History
Bangladesh came into being through a long history of political evolution. Bengal was probably the wealthiest part of the subcontinent till the 16th century. The early history featured a succession of Indian empires, internal squabbling and a tussle between Hinduism and Buddhism for dominance. All of these were just a prelude to the rise of Islam over northern India at the end of the 12th century. Mohammed Bakhtiar Khalzhi from Turkistan captured Bengal in 1199 with only 20 men. Then came the Mughal rule. Under the Mughal viceroys, art and literature flourished, overland trade expanded and Bengal was opened to world maritime trade - the latter marking the death knell of Mughal power as Europeans began to establish themselves in the region. The Portuguese arrived as early as the 15th century but were ousted in 1633 by local opposition. The East India Company negotiated terms to establish a fortified trading post in Calcutta in 1690.

East Pakistan accepted this arrangement on the assumption that other inequalities would be remedied. These included underrepresentation in the civil and military services and the much lower rate of new economic investment in East Pakistan. Although the east wing earned a greater amount of foreign exchange than the west, largely as the result of its exports of jute and other products, the bulk of the foreign exchange was expended in the west. In addition, the central government and military were based in West Pakistan.

or allegiance of the faithful. In 1891, he claimed to be the expected mahdi Ahmad described his teachings, incorporating both Sufic and orthodox Islamic, Hindu, and Christian elements, as an attempt to revitalize Islam in the face of the British Raj, proselytizing Protestant Christianity, and resurgent Hinduism. Thus, the Ahmadiyya community believes that Ahmad conceived the community as a revivalist movement within Islam and not as a new religion. Virtually all mainstream Muslim sects believe that Ahmad proclaimed himself as a prophet, thereby rejecting a fundamental tenet of Islam: Khatme Nabuwat Khatme Nabuwat The exact size of the Ahmadiyya community worldwide is unclear, though there are concentrations of Ahmadis in India, Pakistan, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Gambia. Ahmadis have lived in what is present-day Bangladesh since the early 1900s. Roughly 100,000 Ahmadis live in Bangladesh today In 1971, Bangladesh, then East Pakistan, fought a liberation war to secede from its union with Pakistan, in order to protect its own Bengali language and culture. After a brutal nine-month war, the newly independent Bangladeshis created a constitution founded upon four guiding principles: nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism.

With its large potential natural gas reserves, Bangladesh is becoming increasingly important to world energy markets. Note: Information contained in this report is the best available as of August 2005 and is subject to change.
GENERAL BACKGROUND
Bangladesh has received over $30 billion in disbursed grant aid and loans from foreign donors since its independence in 1971, but remains one of the world's poorest and most densely populated countries. The country historically has run a large trade deficit, financed primarily through foreign aid and remittances from the many Bangladeshi workers abroad (largely in the Persian Gulf region). Overall, foreign aid provides Bangladesh with around 40 percent of government revenues and 50 percent of foreign exchange. According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Bangladesh's main problems include civil unrest, political instability, natural disasters, and inadequate infrastructure. Bangladesh's real GDP grew at an estimated rate of 5.3 percent in 2004, and is projected to remain steady at 5.2 percent in 2005. Although urbanization is proceeding rapidly, agriculture, which employs about two-thirds of the labor force and accounts for 35 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), remains Bangladesh's primary sector. The heavy reliance on agriculture makes Bangladesh vulnerable to natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, and droughts, as well as to fluctuations in world commodity prices. Severe flooding in 2004, reportedly the worst in a decade, damaged crops and infrastructure.
