Photo: Shafiqul Alam/Oxfam Bangladesh has been independent since 16 December 1971. The current Prime Minister is Khaleda Zia, whose Bangladesh Nationalist Party leads a four-party alliance. In the nineteenth century India was ruled by the British. Their policies meant that most land in what is now Bangladesh came to be owned by wealthy Hindus. The rents were set so high that poor farmers were forced off the land. Those who remained were ordered to grow crops to sell overseas, rather than food to eat. This led to terrible food shortages and riots. The British left India in 1947. In August 1947 parts of India were divided off, creating Pakistan.

Bangladesh : History of Philanthropy
Giving and Volunteering People in Bangladesh, especially in rural areas, for hundreds of years have been living in closed knit communities with harmony and mutual support. As natural calamity has been a common occurrence in the region, voluntary service for relief during disaster, epidemic, river erosion etc has been common. This tradition continued during various regal and colonial regimes, often receiving recognition. Since the early 13th century Islamic religious dicta has been important in influencing giving. Almost 85% of the people in Bangladesh are Muslim, and are involved in giving in the form zakat ul mal, zakat ul fitr, 1/3rd meat of the sacrificial animal (annual sacrifice by people who can afford it), sadaqua and (value of) hides and skins of sacrificial animals in charity is a religious requirement. Not only the Muslims, followers of all other religions, Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism, have been involved in giving in different forms. Sharing fruits, vegetables, poultry or cattle products from non-commercial farming is a very common practice in rural Bangladesh. There are some people who, despite their financial hardships, share these produce with their neighbours and relatives. Giving to the beggars is also influenced by religious dictum of helping the poor and destitute. Also in recent times, it is observed that people of all economic backgrounds respond enthusiastically during crises to help victims, eg. acid victims, diseases, etc. Besides religious reasons, desire for political gains and maintaining status quo lead some people to give in charity, as well.

History BaSE was founded in 1992 to coordinate the handicraft activity present in the area gravitating on Khulna (South West of Bangladesh).
In doing so BaSE provides a chance to the groups which are out of the main stream of help.
From 1972 to 1977 Handicrafts Activities started in various villages of Bangladesh with the help and cooperation of different Organisations present in Bangladesh.
For the South West area the main problem was the very difficult communication with the Capital, where the coordinating NGO's had their head-offices.
In 1977 a few groups of our area managed to get in touch with some Buyer Organisation (mainly European).
One of these groups (Bhabarpara Pat Kutir Shilpo), organised as Registered Cooperative Society, obtained the Export Permit and started exporting directly through the nearby Port of Mongla.
In 1978 a commettee was formed, to coordinate the activity of all the groups present on the area and to share the export facilities. A few of the Buyers came to visit us and started sending us joint orders of handicrafts, which were exported using the Export Permit of Bhabarpara Pat Kutir Shilpo.
Around 1985, our main Buyer at the time (Sir John Ltd.) suggested that we organise in a proper way and he offered to bear the expenses for a printed Catalogue which would include the material of all the producer groups involved. To collect all the photos and prepare a detailed price list took us more time than expected, also because of the constant increase of the number of producers' groups to whom the cooperation was extended. But this was the step that brought us to become BaSE. Joint orders of handicrafts were coming from the buyers, compelling us to organise ourselves in a stable way.

Brief introduction, mostly about the first movies shown in Dhaka.

First Bioscope Show
The cinema, one of the wonders of our times, came to this subcontinent back in 19th century. The first bioscope show was held at Watson Hotel in Bombay on 7th July, 1896. A little later the bioscope arrived in Calcutta, the capital city of undivided Bengal. John Stevens, Hudson and Father Laffaun of Saint Xavier's College were the pioneers of bioscope shows in Calcutta.
Its gathered that Stevens exhibited bioscope shows also in Dhaka during the year of 1896-97 with a touring Theatre company though the documentary evidence of Stevens' shows are not available. According to Bengali weekly Dhaka Prokash , the Dhakaities had their first views of bioscope in 1898 at The Crown Theatre which was located at Patuatuli near Sadarghat in Dhaka city. The exhibition was arranged by a Calcutta-based company named Bredford Bioscope Company.
It is interesting to note the main features of the show:
  • The Diamond jubilee procession of Queen Victoria. The Greek-Turkish war. Princess Diana's jump above 300 feet. Coronation ceremony of Russian Tsar.

HISTORY
The history of Bangladesh has been one of extreme. It has thrived in the glow of cultural splendor and suffered under the ravage of wars. Some medieval European geographers located a paradise at the mouth of the Ganges River that was the deltaic land of Bengal. Bengal is the ancient name of present day Bangladesh. Bengal was the wealthiest part of the
Indian Subcontinent until the 16th century.
These three stand in the campus of Dhaka University, where the flag of an independent Bangladesh was first unfurled. They are the three among many who fought
in the Bangladesh war of liberation in 1971. the sculpture is realtively new, but the firmness in the attitude
and the look of the three is not. Its root lie deep
in the hitory and heart of Bangladesh
Dhaka city (the Capital of Bangladesh) on the
bank of river Buriganga 1840
It is assumed that the Austro-Asiatic race first inhabited this region in prehistoric age. Afterwards came the Dravidians, Aryans and Mongoloids. Archeological excavations show signs of powerful dynasties that ruled the land till the Muslims from the Central Asian region conquered it in the 13th century AD and established their rule. A succession of Muslim monarchies
ruled over the area till 1757, when the British conquest took place. In 1947 the British left the Indian Subcontinent and Bengal came to be known as East Bengal and then in 1956 as East Pakistan. In 1971 through an armed struggle Bangladesh emerged as an independent state.

Bangladesh - Historical Setting
When Bangladesh joined the community of nations, it was at first recognized by only India and Bhutan. With its fragile and underdeveloped economic infrastructure under extreme duress, its law and order situation challenged by numerous well-armed contingents of unemployed former freedom fighters, its impoverished population agitated by the unfulfilled promise of rising expectations, Bangladesh was, in international circles, given the unfortunate label of "international basket case."
Bangladesh - EARLY HISTORY, 1000 B.C.-A.D. 1202
For most of its history, the area known as Bangladesh was a political backwateran observer rather than a participant in the great political and military events of the Indian subcontinent. Historians believe that Bengal, the area comprising present-day Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, was settled in about 1000 B.C. by Dravidian-speaking peoples who were later known as the Bang. Their homeland bore various titles that reflected earlier tribal names, such as Vanga, Banga, Bangala, Bangal, and Bengal. The first great indigenous empire to spread over most of present-day India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh was the Mauryan Empire (ca. 320-180 B.C.), whose most famous ruler was Asoka (ca. 273-232 B.C.). Although the empire was well administered and politically integrated, little is known of any reciprocal benefits between it and eastern Bengal. The western part of Bengal, however, achieved some importance during the Mauryan period because vessels sailed from its ports to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. During the time of the Mauryan Empire, Buddhism came to Bengal, and it was from there that Asoka's son, Mahinda, carried the message of the Enlightened One to Sri Lanka. After the decline of the Mauryan Empire the eastern portion of Bengal became the kingdom of Samatata; although politically independent, it was a tributary state of the Indian Gupta Empire (A.D. ca. 319-ca. 540).

Short Historical Overview Medieval European geographers located paradise at the mouth of the Ganges and although this was overhopeful, Bengal was probably the wealthiest part of the subcontinent up until the 16th century. All of this was just a prelude to the unstoppable tide of Islam which washed over northern India at the end of the 12th century. Mohammed Bakhtiar Khalzhi from Turkistan captured Bengal in 1199 with only 20 men. Under the Mughal viceroys, art and literature flourished, overland trade expanded and Bengal was opened to world maritime trade - the latter marking the death knell of Mughal power as Europeans began to establish themselves in the region. The Portuguese arrived as early as the 15th century but were ousted in 1633 by local opposition. The East India Company negotiated terms to establish a fortified trading post in Calcutta in 1690. The decline of Mughal power led to greater provincial autonomy, heralding the rise of the independent dynasty of the

The 13th and 15th Century The Language Movement The War of Liberation Independence The Earliest mention of Bangladesh is found in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata (the story of a great battle in the 9 th century B.C.). Evidence also suggests that there was a strong Mongoloid presence as well. Soon after, in the 5th and 6 th centuries B.C., came the Aryans from Central Asia and the Dravidians from Western India. Then came the Gupta, Pala, Sena rulers, who were Buddhists and Hindus.

As they took the message to the radio station. announcer Kazi Hosne Ara was picked up on the way...
..The Armed police guards posted there were Bengali's who immediately opened the locks and allowed them to go in. Kazi Husne Ara rushed out and brought with her Mahbub Hassan, Belal Ahmed and Abul Kashem Sandwipi.
