Life Sketch H.E BEGUM KHALEDA ZIA Hon'ble Prime Minister Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia’s entry into politics, in early eighties, sudden as it was, made a tremendous impact on the national politics of Bangladesh in no time. Obviously, her entry into politics took place after the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman, her husband, on May 30, 1981. She came to politics not because she wanted it but due to popular demand as well as repeated persuasions from the workers and leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to lead the party at a time the country had just fallen into the hands of an autocratic ruler. Her entry into politics to lead the party, founded by Ziaur Rahman, automatically put her in the role to lead a nationwide mass movement for restoration of democracy in Bangladesh. Nine years of mass movement participated by many political parties ended in December 1990 with the downfall of the autocratic regime of General H.M.Ershad and restoration of democracy in Bangladesh. Begum Zia was the graceful First Lady, though she never used this title, when Zia was the president of the Republic. By her own admission she never aspired to be in politics. But once in it, people saw a different Begum Zia, determined and uncompromising to pursue the cause of democracy and the masses for which millions rallied round her. To the masses of Bangladesh she is just Khaleda, her first name. Out of love and affection they gave her the title, ‘Desh Netri’(Leader of the Country), though she never uses it. Very much a product of the democratic movement, she emerged out of it a charismatic leader.

History of the US Peace Corps In Bangladesh
In 1971 the country experienced a wrenching war of liberation where more than 300,000 Bengali people are said to have died at the hands of the Pakistani army. In December of 1971, the freedom fighters, with the help of the Indian army, defeated the Pakistanis and Bangladesh was born as an independent country.
Over the next 30 years, the country struggled during periods of political unrest, with leaders and families assassinated, with official corruption, and at the same time, trying to become viable as a country taking its place in the world of nations.
In early 1998, the Government of Bangladesh and the Peace Corps announced that the Peace Corps was returning to Bangladesh in January of 1999.
Since then, a second group was sworn in on May 6, 2000 and a third group will began in Feb, 2001. However, at the end of 2001, the program was suspended and the volunteers were relocated, some early termination and others to chose to become part of programs in other countries.

The objective of Bangladesh Student Association(BSA) at Texas Tech University is to promote the culture of Bangladesh in Lubbock and Texas Tech and to assist new students from Bangladesh to adapt at Texas Tech University. Bangladesh is a South Asian country with a rich cultural heritage. It has a rich historical and cultural past, the product of the repeated influx of varied peoples, bringing with them the Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and European cultures. Bangladesh is the home of 'Royal Bengal Tigers'- one of the rare and endangered species of the world. It came into existence in the world map in 1971 after a 9 month long Independence War. After the partition of 1947, when the Indian subcontinent was divided into two countries- India and Pakistan, most of the Bengal fell under Pakistan and known as 'East Pakistan'. The Pakistani rulers underestimated the values of the Bengalis. They declared 'Urdu' as the state language and it was the first time the Bengalis felt the need to have their own country. On 21st February 1952, a language movement in Dhaka earned the rights for the Bengalis to speak in their own language and the Pakistani government had to accept 'Bangla' as the state language. It was unique in the world history, as there had been no such movement before where people sacrificed their lives for their language. In 2001, United Nations honored the martyrs of the language movement by declaring 21st February as the "International Mother Language Day"

The Bangladesh of our dreams
Small arms and subaltern globalisation ... Bangladesh gas sector in perspective Futurity in Bangladesh history The future, suggests Sirajul Islam , has always been an enigma. But isn’t there a way of seeing it coming? It may be well debated whether a historian should be in and for society, and not only about society in the past. And again whether history should be an inquiry into the direction of social development with a look into the future, if possible. After all, it is not too challenging scientifically to make an effort to move on from what has happened in the past to what may happen in the future. In this practice, historians may take partnership with social scientists. I strongly believe that the future may be predicted to a large extent in the light of the past. There was a time when the past was more of a guidance than the present. That is the reason why institutions were more enduring in the past than they are today. But the twentieth century has changed the trend. Now mankind has learned to look to the future more seriously than to the past. Now it is everybody’s feeling that the future must be planned in the light of the past. In doing so historians come into the picture very directly.

The area which is now Bangladesh has a rich historical and cultural past, the product of the repeated influx of varied peoples, bringing with them the Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mongol-Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and European cultures. About 1200 A.D., Muslim invaders under Sufi influence, supplanted Hindu and Buddhist dynasties, and converted most of the population of the eastern areas of Bengal to Islam. Since then, Islam has played a crucial role in the region's history and politics. In the 16th century, Bengal was absorbed into the Mughul Empire. Portuguese traders and missionaries reached Bengal in the latter part of the 15th century. They were followed by representatives of the Dutch, the French, and the British East India Companies. During the 18th and 19th centuries, especially after the defeat of the French in 1757, the British gradually extended their commercial contacts and administrative control beyond Calcutta into the remainder of Bengal and northwesterly up the Ganges River valley. In 1859, the British Crown replaced the East India Company, extending British dominion from Bengal in the east to the Indus River in the west. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Muslim and Hindu leaders began to press for a greater degree of independence. At the movement's forefront was the largely Hindu Indian National Congress. Growing concern about Hindu domination of the movement led Muslim leaders to form the All-India Muslim League in 1906. In 1913, the League formally adopted the same goal as the Indian National Congress: self-government for India within the British Empire. The Congress and the League were unable, however, to agree on a formula to ensure the protection of Muslim religious, economic, and political rights. Over the next 2 decades, mounting tension between Hindus and Muslims led to a series of bitter intercommunal conflicts.

THE ROOTS "Bangladesh has a hundred gates open for entrance but not one for departure" -Bernier. Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land. It has been described by an American political scientist as "a country challenged by contradictions". On the face of it, the recent twists and turns of her history are often inconsistent. It is neither a distinct geographical entity, nor a well-defined historical unit. Nevertheless, it is the homeland of the ninth largest nation in the world whose gropings for a political identity were protracted, intense and agonizing. The key to these apparent contradictions lies in her history Etymologically, the word Bangladesh is derived from the cognate "Vanga" which was first mentioned in the Hindu scripture Aitareya Aranyaka (composed between 500 B C and 500 A D). Legend has it that Bengal was first colonized by Prince Vanga, the son of King Bali and Queen Sudeshna of the Lunar dynasty. According to linguists, the roots of the term Vanga may be traced to languages in the adjoining areas. One school of linguists maintain that the word "Vanga" is derived from the Tibetan word "Bans" which implies "wet and moist". According to this interpretation, Bangladesh literally refers to a wetland. Another school is of the opinion that the term "Vangla" is derived from Bodo (aborigines of Assam) words "Bang" and "la" which connote "wide plains." Proto-history and Pre-history
