The history of Bangladesh is related to that of the larger area of Bengal, which became independent of Delhi by 1341. After a succession of Muslim rulers, it was conquered by Akbar, the great Mughal emperor in 1576. By the beginning of the 18th cent., the governor of the province was virtually independent, but he lost control to the British East India Company, which after 1775 was the effective ruler of the vast area, which also included the Indian states of West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Bengal was divided by the British in 1905 into West Bengal and East Bengal, with East Bengal being more or less coterminous with modern Bangladesh. Since the new province had a majority Muslim population, the partition was welcomed by Muslims, but it was fiercely resented by Indian nationalist leaders who saw it as an attempt to drive a wedge between Muslims and Hindus. The partition was withdrawn in 1911, but it had pointed the way to the events of 1947, when British India was partitioned into the states of India and Pakistan. Bengal and the former Sylhet district of Assam and was known until 1955 as East Bengal and then as East Pakistan. Pakistan's two provinces, which differed considerably in natural setting, economy, and historical background, were separated from each other by more than 1,000 mi (1,610 km) of India. The East Pakistanis, who comprised 56% of the total population of Pakistan, were discontented under a government centered in West Pakistan; the disparity in government investments and development funds given to each province also added to the resentment. Efforts over the years to secure increased economic benefits and political reforms proved unsuccessful, and serious riots broke out in 1968 and 1969.

Political stability proved elusive; during the next 20 years, the country was overtaken by a succession of military coups along with frequent impositions of martial law and states of emergency. However, since the beginning of the 1990s, civilian parties have established firm control over the government. The most important of these are the Awami League and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal ); unusually for a Muslim country, both are currently led by women. The acrimonious rivalry between Awami leader Sheikha Hasina Wajed and BNP leader Begum Khaleda Zia is a central feature of Bangladeshi politics. The most recent poll in September 2001 delivered a landslide victory to Khaleda Zia, who now leads a BNP-based government along with three smaller coalition partners.
Rohingya The Indian situation is more serious (although far less so that between India and Pakistan). First, a number of rebel groups are seeking regional autonomy operating in the Chittagong Hill Tracts from bases in Bangladeshi territory (although their campaign appears to have been suspended, following negotiations with the Bangladeshi government). Second, there is a territorial dispute over a number of enclaves of Indian territory isolated inside Bangladesh. There have been several border clashes between security forces from the two countries, most recently in April 2003.

[edit this] [Upload image] Bangladesh, formely the east wing of Pakistan, emerged as an independent nation in December 1971. The exclamation on the occasion"Joi Bangla! Joi Bangla!" (Victory to Bengal! Victory to Bengal!) was a collective and plaintive cry following a particularly bitter and bloody struggle for freedom. These words echoed the cultural and ethnic disposition of the new statein short the ethos of the peoplethat Bangladesh was to be a culturally and linguistically cohesive unit. Pakistan itself had been created on August 15 1947 largely the result of communal passions pitting Hindus against Muslims. Pakistan was divided into two wings separated by 1 600 kilometers of Indian territory with Islam only a tenuous link between the two wings. Of paramount importance to East Pakistanis was the Bangla (before 1971 usually referred to as Bengali) language and culture a consideration not appreciated by the West Wing of Pakistan until it was too late. When Bangladesh joined the community of nations it was at first recognized by only India and Bhutan. With its fragile and underdeveloped economic infrastructure under extreme duress its law and order situation challenged by numerous well-armed contingents of unemployed former freedom fighters its impoverished population agitated by the unfulfilled promise of rising expectations Bangladesh was in international circles given the unfortunate label of "international basket case."

Is it really true that deforestation and land use practices of the Himalayan farmers are to blame for the recurring and devastating monsoon floods in the plains of the Ganga and Brahmaputra? The validity of this paradigm has been increasingly questioned. This book presents new evidence resulting from a research project on floods in Bangladesh in the context of highland-lowland linkages. Massive floods have occurred regularly before man's impact on the large river basins began. There is no statistical evidence that the frequency of flooding in Bangladesh has increased during the 20th century. There is indication however, that the inter-annual variation of floods and the areal extent of big events have increased since 1950. This trend can be related to similar trends in rainfall and discharge patterns. The hydro-meteorological processes in the Himalayas are not the main causes for floods in Bangladesh. The combination of simultaneous discharge peaks of the big rivers, high runoff from the Meghalaya Hills, heavy rainfall in Bangladesh, high groundwater tables and spring tides creates particularly favourable conditions for large-scale flooding. Lateral river embankments and the disappearance of natural water storage areas in the lowlands seem to have a significant impact on the flooding processes. Accordingly, the myth about deforestation creating big floods and the habit of blaming mountain dwellers for the flood catastrophes must be abandoned. However, this does not relieve the mountain inhabitants of their responsibility to use and manage the environment sustainably.

In 1947, India became independent and a new country was created from the two parts called Pakistan where Muslims were in the majority. East Pakistan actually was East Bengal which is now Bangladesh. People of Bangladesh Most of the people of Bangladesh are confined to villages, with only 26 per cent living in urban areas. More than 98 percent of Bangladesh's inhabitants are Bengalis, who are largely descended from Indo-Aryans, the remaining two per cent includes Biharis and non-Bengali Muslims who had migrated from India. Arts, Culture and Music of Bangladesh Bangladeshi culture, in many ways, reflects the culture of Greater Bengal. Music is widely enjoyed by the people of Bangladesh and classical, light-classical, devotional, and popular music attract many people. Classical music includes Hindustani devotional songs while classical dance include India's Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. The Manipuri traditional dance of India is also quite popular in Bangladesh. Bengali folk dances are commonly performed during festivals and other special occasions. Apart from this, Bangladesh is a land of great painters and realist paintings by them have been recognized worldwide. Economy of Bangladesh Bangladesh has been through a rough economic past. Two partitions led to wide economic neglect and even producing jute in large quantities contributed very less towards economic growth, as the country could not find much investment in this sector. After gaining independence from Pakistan in 1971, many of the West Pakistani-owned firms came within their fold. Apart from this, Bangladesh's vast reserves of natural gas promise a great potential in the country's economic growth.

A new initiative in preserving the social history of Bangladesh: Heritage - Archives of Bangladesh History "We are losing our memory. Our heritage is slipping away. The collective memory of our country and its 130 million inhabitants is severely threatened because there are no places where we can deposit our historical material. There are only a few archives in Bangladesh and they collect state records. What about the many political, social and cultural movements in which we were involved? What will our children and grandchildren remember about our lives? Not much, unless we take action to leave information about it. Bangladesh has a vibrant civil society, and it is a great pity that there are no depositories to preserve our memory of it." History of Bangladesh
"Bangladesh has a hundred gates open for entrance but not one for departure". These were the words of the seventeenth century French traveler Francois Bernier. Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land. It has been described by an American political scientist as "a country challenged by contradictions." On the face of it, the recent twists and turns of her history are often inconsistent. It is neither a distinct geographical entity, nor a well-defined historical unit. Nevertheless, it is the homeland of the ninth largest nation in the world whose groping for a political identity were protracted, intense and agonizing. The key to these apparent contradictions lies in her history. Thus, to understand Bangladesh's current situation, one must learn of its history. Today, Bangladesh is still faced with a similar problem. The illiteracy rate of the country is extremely high but those who do graduate from universities are nevertheless left unemployed or underemployed.
