Bangladesh's Zia keen to form government
Zia's four party alliance won an unofficial landslide but needs it to be confirmed before she can start to build a government DHAKA, Bangladesh The woman expected to become Bangladesh's next prime minister is seeking quick confirmation of her party's landslide victory in Monday's election. Khaleda Zia, who led the country in the early 1990s as Bangladesh's first woman prime minister, says she wants to form the next government without delay. Before she can take power though she needs the election commission to publish the results of Monday's poll confirming her four-party alliance's landslide win. Supporters of the outgoing Awami League led by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina are accusing Zia's party of vote rigging. However, international observers have said the election, supervised by a neutral caretaker administration, was free and fair.

The caretaker government of Bangladesh has agreed to a request by the United States to use the nation's airspace, airfields and port facilities. A senior foreign ministry official Shafi Sami said the decision was taken after consulting the main political parties. He said the government believed there was widespread public support for the development of an international coalition against terrorism, following the attacks on New York and Washington a week ago, and the move would not damage the stability of Bangladesh.
