Physical Overview Most of the areas of Bangladesh lies within the broad delta formed by the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. Lands are exceedingly flat, low-lying, and subject to annual flooding. Much fertile, alluvial soil is deposited by the floodwaters. The only significant area of hilly terrain, constituting less than one-tenth of the nation's territory, is the Chittagong Hill Tracts in the narrow southeastern panhandle of the country. There, on the border with Burma, is Mowdok Mual (1003 m/3292 ft), the country's highest peak. Small, scattered hills lie along or near the eastern and northern borders with India. The eroded remnants of two old alluvial terraces-the Madhupur Tract, in the north central part of the country, and The Barind, straddling the northwestern boundary with India- attain elevations of about 30 m (about 100 ft). The soil here is much less fertile than the annually replenished alluvium of the surrounding floodplain.

GCSE Geography > Coastal Flooding - Bangladesh
The bullet points below show the main points needed to answer a question similar to that shown. The example of the Bangladesh, which is an LEDC, has been used. Question: "People who live near the coast may suffer from coastal flooding. Explain the causes of this coastal flooding and how people have tried to prevent flooding of this coastal area happening" Answer: Causes of flooding:
    • In 1991 - April 29th, a very large cyclone was "funnelled" down the Bay of Bengal. This was due to a low pressure area - higher sea levels - surge flooding... (140,000 died)
    • Snow melt from Himalayas
    • Deforestation - more water in rivers - more sediment build up - higher risk of flooding
    • Very heavy rain
What has been done to try and prevent the flooding happening again:
    • Mangrove swamps being planted off coast to increase amount of land that makes storm surges etc... lose their energy
    • Embankments have been built to protect coast - more importantly, they have been maintained.
    • Efficient early warning system
    • Large concrete shelters built above flood levels to protect people - strong enough to withstand strong winds.

    Why You will Visit?
Reading the world's press you could be forgiven for thinking that Bangladesh is a disaster zone rather than a travel destination. But hiding behind these images of cyclones and floods is a strikingly lush and beautiful land with a rich history and a variety of attractions unusual for a country this size. For a start, you can visit archaeological sites dating back over 2000 years; check out the longest beach and the largest littoral mangrove forest in the world; and see decaying 'Gone With The Wind' mansions of 19th-century maharajas. Despite being the world's most crowded country, rural Bangladesh feels relaxed, spacious and friendly: travelers from India have been agreeably surprised to find border officials offering them cups of tea rather than reams of forms to fill in. Facilities are limited but if you have an independent streak, it's definitely worth avoiding the crowds heading to India and Nepal and following the old slogan of Bangladesh's tourist body: 'Come to Bangladesh before the tourists'.
