Art and Culture History of Abstract Expressionism A new vanguard emerged in the early 1940s, primarily in New York, where a small group of loosely affiliated artists created a stylistically diverse body of work that introduced radical new directions in art—and shifted the art world's focus. Never a formal association, the artists known as "Abstract Expressionists" or "The New York School" did, however, share some common assumptions. Tue, 13 Sep 2005, 10:16:00

  • The typical household in Bangladesh, particularly in the villages, includes several generations of extended family. Most marriages are arranged by parents or other relatives, but increasing numbers of educated men and women choose their own partners. Custom and religion among Muslims require that a dowry be offered by the husband to the wife, but it is usually claimed only in the event of separation or at the husband's death. Divorce is permissible among Muslims. Hindu marriage is sacramental, but a Hindu can obtain a separation by application to a court of law. Muslim law permits limited polygamy.

German interest in the culture of Bengal, a region encompassing Indian West Bengal as well as today's Bangladesh, dates back to the visits to Germany by Bengal's national poet and Nobel Prizewinner for Literature Rabindranath Tagore in the 1920s and '30s. Many Bangladeshi intellectuals have a keen and informed interest in German literature and philosophy. In Bangladesh, the Goethe Institute in Dhaka is the meeting-place for all those interested in Germany.

Madras, India, December 1986 Table of Contents The designations employed and the presentation of material in this publication do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries. PREFACE This paper reports on three years of activities of a technology development-cumdemonstration project on integrated farming of brackishwater shrimp and fish-cumrice, carried out both sequentially and concurrently, at Satkhira, Khulna district, in the south west of Bangladesh. The project improved on traditional culture practices of the region and also evolved new technologies, which if adopted would benefit the farmer by increasing his yield and the quality of his product. The project also suggested that, given appropriate modifications of culture practices and of certain environmental conditions, brackish water shrimp and fish-cum-rice culture is technically feasible. The experiments were carried out in collaboration with the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Bangladesh. Dr. A.N. Ghosh, BOBP Shrimp Culture Consultant, was associated with the project from 1982 to July 1984: he supervised the construction of the farm complex and provided technical guidance during the first one-and-a-half years of the culture operation (January 1983 - July 1984). The 1985 culture operations were designed by Dr. Mahmudul Karim, BOBP Aquaculturist, who left the project by end-March 1985. A study on shrimp seed collection was conducted by Mr. K. Larsson under a Swedish fellowship programme. Mr. Abul Kashem, Project Officer, BOBP was responsible for day-today supervision of the construction work and culture activities.

History of Bangladesh
Bangladesh was once part of the Indian state of Bengal. East and West Bengal together was called Greater Bengal. In 1947, India became independent and a new country was created from the two parts called Pakistan where Muslims were in the majority. East Pakistan actually was East Bengal which is now Bangladesh. After a brief period of conflict with Pakistan, Bangladesh came into existence on 16th December1971.

Education system:
In Bangladesh about 35% adults are litereate. Poor families cannot afford to let their children go to school so instead they work. Although primary schools are free, only about 80% of eligible pupils attend them. Only 25% of them will complete five years of basic education. After having completed basic or primary education pupils start class 6 at high school and get their Secondary School Certificate after they have studied another 4 years.
