Political stability proved elusive; during the next 20 years, the country was overtaken by a succession of military coups along with frequent impositions of martial law and states of emergency. However, since the beginning of the 1990s, civilian parties have established firm control over the government. The most important of these are the Awami League and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal ); unusually for a Muslim country, both are currently led by women. The acrimonious rivalry between Awami leader Sheikha Hasina Wajed and BNP leader Begum Khaleda Zia is a central feature of Bangladeshi politics. The most recent poll in September 2001 delivered a landslide victory to Khaleda Zia, who now leads a BNP-based government along with three smaller coalition partners.
Rohingya The Indian situation is more serious (although far less so that between India and Pakistan). First, a number of rebel groups are seeking regional autonomy operating in the Chittagong Hill Tracts from bases in Bangladeshi territory (although their campaign appears to have been suspended, following negotiations with the Bangladeshi government). Second, there is a territorial dispute over a number of enclaves of Indian territory isolated inside Bangladesh. There have been several border clashes between security forces from the two countries, most recently in April 2003.

A barbecue stand served by Mr. Shiina who is the current president of Hitachi-Bangladesh Culture Forum marked a good start for cultural exchange between Japan and Bangladesh thanks to a Bangladeshi with good Japanese ability. Currently its exchange programs are well under way.
Mr. Mir Shamsud Doha, current General Secretary of Hitachi-Bangladesh Cultural Forum had proposed Mr. Ahmed Hussein, Commercial Councilor of Bangladeshi Embassy in Japan to establish the forum. Mr. Doha is a classmate of Mr. Hussein. The forum was commenced in 1997. Current members of the forum are Mr. Shiina, six Bangladeshi and five Japanese people. Any Hitachi citizens who support the forum are welcome to sign up for a membership.
There will be no membership fee, however, registration fee for events will be charged as well as other required fees. With no special restrictions for the members, the forum should be relatively easy to join. The forum has family- based exchanges with Bangladeshi Embassy.

The Bengal region has a multifaceted folk heritage, enriched by its ancient animist, Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim roots. Weaving, pottery and terracotta sculpture are some of the earliest forms of artistic expression. The best known literature of Bangladesh is the work of the great Bengali poets Rabindranath Tagore and Nasrul Islam. Folk theatre is common at the village level and usually takes place during harvest time or at melas (village fairs). There are many folk dances, but classical dance is largely borrowed from Indian models and is frowned upon by the more severe religious leaders.

And now I sing these songs to my keen little two-year old, who seem to have taken into

Excellent insight into orthodox Islamic and bangladesh culture. I enjoyed the folk music and the depiction of festivals immensely.

ABOUT MATIR MOINA
Many thanks to Mr. Masud, both for making this beautiful film, and for coming to talk to us about it. He told his story in a very loving and respectful way. It was easy for me to identify with Anu, as his experiences reminded me very much of my own Hebrew school days; some teachers strict and unbending, others loving and sweet. The teacher who changed Anu's name to Anwar was no different than my daughter's teacher, who felt the Hebrew name we had given her was not "really" Hebrew, and made her use her middle name, Sarah. This "foreign" film hit very close to home. As a window into another time and part of the world, it added to the bringing together of the world. We saw that people are the same all over the world with the same fears and desires to everyone. Very touching. This film should be seen by many people around the world. It is a tender tale of life as seen through the eyes of a child with the perspective of an educated, humanistic man. The sensitivity and clarity of this film articulates a cultural landscape that is hidded to most North Americans. I was moved to tears by the poignancy of this story. Interesting that Mr. Masud included the debate between differing views of Muslim thought through music. Very effective for me as I knew nothing about it.

Her skin was melted, her features displaced. She had a look in her eyes that communicated the terror she had lived and the hopelessness she felt.
Two months later, I sat across from another woman, Gazi Nasrin Akter - beautiful, educated, sophisticated and wealthy. She and the beggar woman were completely different, yet both shared an elemental similarity that determines everything in their lives: they are women in a country and culture that significantly marginalizes their gender.
Such attacks occur here for one of two reasons: because a woman refuses a proposal from a man and he wants to ensure that she never marries, or her family does not give her husband a large enough dowry. Such treatment was among the many topics discussed during the gender issues training portion of my Peace Corps orientation in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Akter said she knows such attacks frequently occur. I spoke with her about her feelings on gender issues when I met her, two months after I saw the beggar woman. The 28-year-old Akter said she considered herself lucky.
