Summary in English On the road to Möre’s past By Gert Magnusson Ph D Construction of the new E22 highway between Hossmo and Söderåkra will affect a number of ancient monuments. The county administrative board has authorised the excavation of around 30 of these remains. The effect of this decision is that The County Museum of Kalmar is presently involved in the most extensive archaeological fieldwork conducted in the county since the construction of the Öland Bridge in the early 1970s. The museum has produced a comprehensive project program: A road through time and space . For each ancient monument a plan of investigation has been written, describing how it is to be excavated. The project program consists of seven subprograms: The Mesolithic, The Neolithic, The Bronze Age, The Early Iron Age, The Late Iron Age and Middle Ages, Settlement Structure and Iron Production. In addition, there are three support programs: Human Geography, the Natural Landscape and DNA-studies. The aim of the project is to stress the connections between economic progress and locally developed traditions and cultural patterns. The resources of Möre and the actions of humans form the starting point for an account of the area’s development from the end of the earliest Mesolithic colonisation up until Historical times, as seen in the ancient remains along the new road. Several general questions need to be asked. How have the people of Möre dealt with the recurring problems of maintaining traditional ways-of-life and means of subsistence? What cultural patterns have existed? How have they been used?

Research Interests: Archaeology of Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean In addition to the study of the mesolithic-neolithic transition in the Mediterranean, Dr. Voytek continues to collaborate with the Institute of Archaeology, Prague, and the University of Sheffield within a project that deals with "Archaeological Landscape Reconstruction in Northern Bohemia." Her participation in the research has been funded by grants from the Stahl Endowment and the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX). In the summer of 1999, Dr. Voytek was engaged in a collaborative effort with the National Museum in Szeged, Hungary. She and a colleague from the University of Genoa, Italy, spent several weeks on the analyses of the lithic assemblage from the neolithic site of Gorsza which will be published as part of the site report. Working Group on Coastal Culture and Maritime Heritage
The Baltic Sea has throughout history connected the people around it. Both coastal culture and maritime heritage in our countries still show important similarities, essential for understanding our common identity and history. However, coastal culture and maritime heritage are threatened, not only by the crisis in the traditional industries, but also by the pressures of recreational activities and urban development. The Working Group on Coastal Culture and Maritime Heritage has identified its main tasks as
  • describing challenges and opportunities within the field of coastal culture and maritime heritage

48. Variations Of R1b Ydna In Europe
The coastal parts of the North Seabaltic region had more R1b diversity than of diversity of the four variants to the known archaeology of the Atlantic
http://www.worldfamilies.net/Tools/r1b_ydna_in_europe.htm
Variations of R1b Ydna in Europe: Distribution and Origins. A.A.Foster. 13 March, 2005. Based on the differences and diversity of the alleles of R1b's DYS390 locus, there is evidence that there are four regional variants of the R1b sub-haplogroup in Europe. These are: i) Baltic-Russian . (ii) NorthSea-Baltic . (iii) Alpine-South German . (iv) Atlantic In Central and Western Europe, north of its great mountain ranges - The Pyrenees, Alps, and others - the major rivers flow northwest and northwards to the Atlantic, the North Sea and the Baltic. Only the Danube, which flows eastwards from the Northern Alpine regions to the Black sea, follows a different pattern. Extrapolating from data available within the online "YHRD" database (¹, see below ) suggested all variants of R1b in Europe, as pre-historic hunter-gatherers, entered Europe from the east, and migrated and expanded along rivers and coastlines, and across the ridgeways of high ground, eventually to reach the Baltic, North Sea, Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines. The mean frequency for DYS390=24 within the whole of the "YHRD" European database is about 59% of the R1b DYS390 population. In Iberia and France, and in the more remote areas of the British Isles, it averages almost 70% and reaches 80%. But in the Baltic regions the frequency is consistently low: it averages only 33% throughout the Baltic States, about 43% in the Netherlands, and 47% in Baltic Germany. The lowest European percentage (29%) is to be found in Moscow, Russia. An even lower frequency, of 22%, can be found in Asian Khazakstan.

February 2004 Daphne's Salmon The HADAS banquet at Scorradale house - illustrating a point about ritual feasting I first met Daphne Lorimer and her husband Ian in the summer of 1990, while participating in Colleen Batey and Christopher Morris' excavations at the Earl's Bu, Orphir. Their home overlooked the excavation at a distance, and like so many of Orkney's heritage initiatives, they warm-heartedly adopted the project and its staff. I remember the fine afternoon when Chris Morris first took me to meet the Lorimers, and Daphne's letter to The Orcadian championing the project. I particularly remember the luxurious evening banquet they put on for a bedraggled cohort of diggers (otherwise managing on a self-made diet of generic field grub). Although memorable enough of its own accord, I have a constant reminder of the feast. With a little help in the kitchen from our hostess, I left the Lorimers with one of my first zooarchaeological reference specimens - Daphne's salmon. I write this short piece in thanks to a generous and enthusiastic champion of all aspects of Orkney's archaeology.

4. Results of applied investigations No branch of the Humanities, as archaeology is, can directly deal with applied investigations only. In indirect sense, applied investigations in archaeology may be rescue excavations where the results of archaeological research are applied to rescue excavations of such antiquities that are on the way of starting important for national economy objects. The same holds true about the work done on the sites for the conservation of antiquities, necessary in towns and certain areas for working out defence strategies, general plans and reconstruction projects of antiquities. Within last five years the employees of the Chair and kabinet have carried out the rescue excavations in the following areas: Rebala stone-cist graves in Harjumaa (V. Lang and undergraduates M. [Link transferred from the original '98-'99 Baltic page]: This is "Cultural Heritage," which looks at a culture dating back to 10,000 BCE. This section includes excellent (albeit brief) essays and overviews on archaeology, Yule traditions, history, language, folklore, architecture, folk art, ancient musical instruments (including mini-recordings, if your browser can handle these), and much more. One essay, "Lithuanian Folk Art," looks at wood carving in some depth (it also includes several nice illustrations); one interesting fact here is that men carved beautifully decorated wooden spinning and weaving implements and gave them as gifts to women, a wonderful example of creative partnerships this arouses questions about ancient Greece, and other ancient cultures in which spinning and weaving were a purely feminine realm: as far as I know, no one ever asks who carved the looms and spinning wheels might these contributions also have been male gifts? is there any evidence, in literature or elsewhere, to support this possibility?); under "Textiles" in this same essay is the intriguing fact that white linen was believed to possess magical power.

In so far as it is possible, the excavations will continue through the winter months, with lighted tents constructed over the sites. A field-laboratory has been constructed on-site, to enable the post-excavation handling of such a large quantity of finds. Field-supervisor Heming Hagen has started on the post-excavation work which consists, among other things of the washing and classifying some several thousand lithic artefacts. Some of the finds from this site have been presented on this website previously and based upon a preliminary overview Heming can report that the particularly elegant material points to an exciting site from the middle of the Late Stone-age. The finds includes flint and slate artefacts however 10 amber fragments stand out amongst this material. A presentation of the amber finds will be given here in the following.
