By Guardian Newspapers, 7/7/2004 Greek workers yesterday threatened to throw more than 800 hotels across Athens into chaos at next month's Olympics, vowing to stage surprise stoppages throughout the games if their long-standing demands are not met.
The threat of strike action could affect tens of thousands of visitors to the games, including royals and Olympic dignitaries, who will be staying at the capital's 40 most expensive establishments.
Workers said yesterday they "didn't care" if the likes of Spain's Queen Sofía, or the Prince of Wales, who is also due to fly in for the games, had to do without the five-star service they are used to.
"They are not on starvation salaries," said Christos Katsotis who heads the 11,500-strong union of hotel workers in the greater Athens area.

from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler:
This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

About the FAI... The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the world's air sports federation, was founded in 1905.It is a non-governmental and non-profit making international organisation with the basic aim of furthering aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide. Ever growing, FAI is now an organisation of some 100 member countries.
The Foundation of the FAI At the start of the 20th Century, the pioneering flights of pilots such as Clement Ader, the Wright Brothers and Santos-Dumont, the proliferation of aeronautical competitions, and increasingly rapid technological advances marked the real birth of the modern aviation era. A small group of men recognized the growing need for an international federation to coordinate and give direction to the rapidly growing aeronautical activity. "This Congress, recognizing the special importance of aeronautics, expresses the desire that in each country, there be created an Association for regulating the sport of flying and that thereafter there be formed a Universal Aeronautical Federation to regulate the various aviation meetings and advance the science and sport of Aeronautics." "methodically catalogue the best performances achieved, so that they be known to everybody; to identify their distinguishing features so as to permit comparisons to be made; and to verify evidence and thus ensure that record-holders have undisputed claims to their titles."

Miracle on Ice
There was no question at the 1980 Olympics as to which was the better hockey team.
But the Americans knew they only had to beat the Soviets once.

By Carl Schreck The Boys of Winter: The Untold Story of a Coach, a Dream, and the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team
By Wayne Coffey Crown
288 Pages The 1980 Soviet Olympic hockey team was one of the most formidable collections of players ever assembled on the ice, the premium product of a national sports machine that churned out world and Olympic champions like clockwork. But as Americans grasped for something to be proud of amid the Iran hostage crisis, ballooning inflation and crippling gas prices, a group of anonymous U.S. amateurs beat the Soviet juggernaut 4-3 during the semifinals of the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics in one of the greatest athletic upsets of the 20th century. What became known as the "Miracle on Ice" pulled off by a group of college players guided by shrewd head coach Herb Brooks, who died in a car accident in August 2003 has taken its place in American sporting folklore as the ultimate David-and-Goliath narrative, a feel-good story for anyone who has ever sided with the underdog.
