Potted History Some early history about women and the Olympics
  • Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games, but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes in mens Ancient Olympic chariot races. Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Please see Statistics for more information. 1900 was the year the World Exhibition was scheduled to take place in Paris, with celebrations and events akin to our own Millennium celebrations. The Olympic Games were taking place at the same time, from 14th May to 28th October and were considered by many to be part of the World Exhibition. Some of the competitors did not know if they were in the Olympic Games or the World Fair. Happily for the women athletes of the time, the all male International Olympic Committee, who were very against women taking parts in sports, had little influence in Paris.
The organisers of the World Exhibition seemed unconcerned about the rights and wrongs of women competing, so their presence was not an issue. To this day there is still confusion as to which events were Olympic and which were World Fair events. So, who were the first female Olympic competitors and champion? For a sport to be Olympic in 1900 it had to be an open sport, amateur and international, not handicapped and not motorised. The long-held view was that women took part in just

Daring sporting performance at the 46th Gordon Bennett version française Created in 1906 and reserved exclusively for gas balloons, the Gordon Bennett Cup is the oldest aeronautical competition organized under the supervision of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. Last Saturday, 31 August 2002, around midnight, 17 crews representing 8 different nations took off for the 46th edition of this prestigious competition, climbing high in the sky above Châtellerault (FRA) with the aim of flying as far as possible in any direction. After three days and nights on board their home-built balloon, "Le Petit Prince", the two brothers Vincent and Jean-François LEYS (FRA) won the Gordon Bennett Cup for the second consecutive year. This time, the LEYS Brothers chose an especially daring flight route. After leaving the French coast between La Rochelle and Bordeaux, they skirted the north coast of Spain and then flew out on a semi-circular route over the Atlantic Ocean leaving the Portuguese coast more than 400 km behind them. With the help of their expert forecaster, the two aeronauts finally returned to dry land, touching down safely yesterday (Tuesday) evening at 20:12 UTC 100 kilometres north-west of Faro (Portugal), having covered a straight distance of 1282 km from their starting point. The pilots had meteorological assistance from Luc TRULLEMANS, the forecaster who guided the non-stop round-the-world balloon flights of Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones in 1999, and of Steve Fossett in 2002.

UPMC SportsWorks
By M. A. Jackson
Carnegie Science Center's big, new, hands-on exhibit unites the experience of sports for every age level with the laws of science that control sports, and with the medical implications of sports injuries. From exciting virtual reality games to physical challenges, Pittsburgh's UPMC SportsWorks is a first-day tourist activity, and its proximity to the city's new stadiums underscores that Pittsburgh, as a great sports-loving town, is worth a visit. Whatever you want, Pittsburgh's got it. Great views? Climb Mt. Washington. Eclectic shops? Take the Visa card to Shadyside and the South Side. Need a doctor or a degree? Head over to Oakland. Hungry? Chow down in the Strip District. Sports, you say? Well, Pittsburgh's the place to be. We have the new PNC Park baseball stadium; a new football stadium; a bridge named after the late, great ball player Roberto Clemente; a street dubbed Mazeroski Way in honor of the Pirate's second baseman; and Mario Lemieux Place in honor of one the greatest hockey players ever. Come August 4, UPMC SportsWorks at Carnegie Science Center debuts. Before long sports fans will be calling Pittsburgh "Sports-burgh."

The Girls' Games
Summary:
They were promoted as the Green Games and the Athletes’ Games. They’ve turned out to be the Girls’ Games. More women are participating in the Sydney Olympics than ever before - a long haul since the first modern Olympics banned women from competing.
ANITA TEDDER, co-author of ‘A Proper Spectacle: Women Olympians 1900-1936’, looks back on the early history and controversies surrounding Olympic events for women.
And on this centenary of women in the Olympics, DEBBIE SIMMS, the manager of the Women and Sport Unit of the Australian Sports Commission, discusses what’s driving our perceptions of female athleticism now. And will it make any difference to women’s sport beyond the Olympics?
Plus, Australian sportswomen competing in water polo, beach volleyball, basketball and other Olympic events talk about their own challenges and successes.

Amanda Smith: Welcome to The Sports Factor’s final program from the International Broadcast Centre here at Olympic Park, Homebush Bay. And it’s an all-girl program today, in celebration of Sydney 2000 being the centenary year of women’s participation in the Olympic Games.
Sydney, the Green Games, the Athletes’ Games, Oceania’s Games. But they’ve also emerged as the Girls’ Games. More women are competing in these Olympic Games than ever before. And many of the outstanding and memorable performances have come from female athletes. As I’m sure you know, the very first modern Olympics, in 1896, banned women from competing. And in a moment, we’ll go back to the early history and controversies that have surrounded female participation in the Olympics. First though, a couple of the memorable moments, so far at these Games, from Australian sportswomen, past and present.
