warning: This website is not related to Pop-Folk music i.e. Bulgarian Chalga, Serbian folk or Balkan national folklore. It is about hardcore instrumental cocek. No vocals, no crap, just raw Gypsy cocek.
definition: Cocek is a musical genre and dance that emerged in the Balkans during the early 19th century. It spawned from Ottoman military bands which at that time were scattered across the region, mostly throughout Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Romania. That led to the eventual segmentation and wide range of ethnic sub-styles / trends in cocek. Cocek was handed down the generations, preserved mostly by Gypsy minorities and was largely practiced at village weddings and banquets. There isn't an English word for cocek although some refer to it as Gypsy brass. The spelling "cocek" is actually derived from Serbian. Macedonians use chochek. In Bulgaria, it is written as kyuchek or kyutchek. No matter how you address it, it is one of the most fascinating manifestations of Balkan and Gypsy culture. And yes, this is the music traditionally used for belly dancing.

Elizabeth Dole heading to the Balkans
April 15, 1999
Web posted at: 1:10 p.m. EDT (1710 GMT)
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 15) Former American Red Cross President and potential Republican presidential candidate Elizabeth Dole departs, as a private citizen, for Macedonia and Albania later Thursday. Mrs. Dole is heading to the Balkans to "let the (Kosovo) refugees know that we care and hear their plea." Dole will visit a Kosovo refugee camp in Macedonia on Friday. Saturday she will be in Albania meeting with leaders of that war-torn area, and return to the U.S. on Sunday. While giving a speech to 4,000 U.S. naval midshipmen in Annapolis,Maryland Wednesday night, Mrs. Dole spoke strongly about the current conflict in Yugoslavia. She said Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic "ought to be labeled a war criminal" and President Bill Clinton must "use all the power necessary" to win in Kosovo. She tackled head-on the politically volatile question of sending U.S. ground troops into Kosovo. "If the NATO commanders and the Joint Chiefs of Staff say that ground troops are required to accomplish our goals, then my answer is 'yes,'" she said. Mrs. Dole, whose husband, Bob, recently served as the president's envoy to the Balkans, accused Clinton not standing firm in his ultimatums to Milosevic.

Balkans' 'most-wanted' to give up
Ojdanic will give himself up to The Hague tribunal, his lawyer has said BELGRADE, Yugoslavia Two of the 23 Yugoslav suspects wanted by the U.N. war crimes court in The Hague have said they will surrender to the tribunal. General Dragoljub Ojdanic and former Croatian Serb rebel leader Milan Martic were on a list released by the Yugoslav government as the most-wanted war crimes suspects sought by The Hague. Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic suggested that all of them would be hunted down if they did not surrender before the deadline, which runs out this week. Ojdanic, who commanded the army during the 1999 NATO airstrikes against Yugoslavia, is charged by the tribunal with alleged war crimes in Kosovo. Martic allegedly ordered retaliatory missile fire against the Croatian capital, Zagreb, that killed several civilians in 1995. Since his indictment by the U.N. court in 1995, Martic has been hiding in Bosnia and Serbia.

Introduction
With Kosovo being so much in the news, many people are scrambling to learn something about the history of the region. Many have heard something about the earlier battle of Kosovo in 1389 in which (we are told) the "Serbian nation" was defeated by "the Turks". Alas, in the field of Balkan history, misinformation is more plentiful than information, and anything one is likely to read about the battle of Kosovo Polje is likely to be misleading. Still, the myth of Kosovo is too overwhelming (not least in the minds of the Serbs) to be ignored, and any exploration of the real history of Serbia has to begin with an understanding of the national mythology. To that end, I'm offering some of the traditional stories here.

When two books appeared – Rudolf Biæaniæ’s The Economic Background of the Croatian Question (1938), which was introduced by the leader of the Croatian Peasant Party dr. Vlatko Maèek, and The Black Lamb and the Grey Falcon (Macmillan, London, 1941) l , probably nobody supposed that those books, in spite of their ideological orientation, would for some sixty years figure as inevitable reading of the historians and politicians focusing on the Balkans. The impact of these books not only on these two professions, but also on many journalists and "instant analysts", has been anything but negligible. Now, almost at the very end of the century, we are once again helpless witnesses of the promotion of a book that has bound its career with a flourishing political trend. Its function is that of the advance guard and subsequent legitimization of new politics in relation to the Balkans. How was Noel Malcolm’s book received by American and British historians?

    Balkans Justice Bulletin:
    The Trial of Dominik Ilijasevic
    Human Rights Watch January 2004
    Introduction
The trial of Bosnian Croat Dominik Ilijasevic-Como, age 38, before the Zenica Cantonal Court, began on December 16, 2002 in Zenica, in Federation Bosnia and Herzegovina (Federation BH). The seven charges on the indictment arise from war-time abuses by Bosnian Croat forces against Bosniac (Bosnian Muslim) civilians in central Bosnia, including the October 23, 1993, killing of thirty-eight Bosniacs in the village of Stupni Do, central Bosnia. Ilijasevic denies all charges. Trial hearings will continue during 2004, but recent personnel changes in the Zenica Cantonal Court make it difficult to envisage when the verdict will be rendered. On December 10, 2003, the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of the Federation BH decided not to re-appoint the presiding judge in the Ilijasevic case to the position of a judge in the Zenica Cantonal Court. This decision could significantly slow down the trial. Given the ethnicity of the accused, the nature of the crimes, and the location of the trialÑin an area with a Bosniac majorityÑthere were concerns prior to the start of the trial that proceedings might be tainted by ethnic bias. These concerns were somewhat allayed by the composition of the five-member trial chamber: the presiding judge and one of the three lay-judges are Bosnians of non-Bosniac ethnicity. To date, Human Rights Watch is aware of no infringement of the rights of the accused during the trial. On February 7, 2003, the chamber even released Ilijasevic from prison having found that conditions the law prescribes for provisional release had been fulfilled.

UK urged to probe 'Balkans syndrome'
WEB EXCLUSIVE Patricia Kelly: NATO nations worry U.S.ammunition tied to cancer deaths LONDON, England Britain has been urged to join other European NATO members in conducting health checks on troops who served in the Balkans. Concern at the effects of depleted uranium used in armour-piercing shells on soldiers grew after Italy linked the deaths of six soldiers to exposure to radioactive material. A number of European allies have called for an investigation into deaths or illness among peacekeepers a condition dubbed "Balkans Syndrome" but Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said it sees no cause for concern and that the risks to troops are "minimal." But the pressure on London is set to increase after the MoD said on Sunday that its troops had fired depleted uranium at test ranges in the north of the country over the last 10 years.

    U.S. joins Balkans peace mission
Powell starts the talks in Paris PARIS, France Renewed diplomatic efforts to end continuing violence in the Balkans are taking place in France with U.S. participation. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has held his first meeting with foreign ministers from the six-nation Contact Group formed to tackle ongoing problems in the Balkans following the break-up of Yugoslavia. French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin voiced concern at what he calls a "unilateral" approach to international affairs by President George W. Bush's administration. Powell is due to meet both Jospin and French President Jacques Chirac while in France. There has been concern in Europe that Washington could unilaterally cut its commitments in the Balkans. But Powell said after Bush's election victory that U.S. troops entered Bosnia and Kosovo with their NATO allies and they would come out together.
