Course Description: This course provides a cultural-historical overview of the peoples of the Balkans, e.g., Bosnians, Serbs, Croatians, Macedonians, Bulgarians, Albanians, Romanians, Greeks, Turks and Roma (Gypsies). The primary focus will be on the development of national identity as seen by the peoples themselves and by others. We will explore the various social, historical, and cultural factors that influence a group's concept of themselves as a nationality as well as the means by which that self-concept is expressed. One of the themes of the course will be to probe the meaning of the term "Balkanization" which is currently used as a negative term to refer to the fragmentation of peoples according to nationality, religion, and ethnicity. The term could also be used less pejoratively for describing common developments and characteristics unique to the languages of the Balkan Peninsula , particularly in the fields of linguistics, literature and anthropology. There will be a special emphasis this semester on the conflicts in the Balkans in the 1990s (such as Bosnia, Kosova, and Macedonia), as well as the issues relating to current war crimes trials.

Balkan scholars honor 'Uncle' Wayne BY KATHLEEN O'TOOLE In the Romanian dictionaries of early last century, "Balkan" was defined as "something negative or hopeless," Romanian historian Sorin Antohi reported at the opening of a conference on the Balkans' many traumas. However, Professor Wayne Vucinich, a Balkan who, in his own words, is "always an optimist," defies such a definition. Vucinich, 87, was surrounded April 14 and 15 by former students who addressed him as "Uncle Wayne." The Robert and Florence McDonnell Professor Emeritus of East European Studies was honored with a two-day symposium on the Balkans, hosted by the Stanford Center for Russian and East European Studies, which Vucinich helped found and directed for many years. Having trained more than two dozen academics in Eastern European history, Vucinich was fondly remembered at the meeting as a friendly, protective professor, always willing to talk with them about their personal lives and encourage them to pursue his field. "He made you feel special because of your background. You didn't have to be English or German or French. You could be what you were," said Mary Ann Milias St. Peter, A.B. '67. A San Francisco investment manager now, St. Peter grew up in Gilroy, the child of Croatian immigrants who spoke little about their Balkan history because they were determined to assimilate. Vucinich, she said, "fit the pieces together for me. He is Serbian and I'm Croatian, but he was very objective in his lectures so that everyone who came from the region could feel special."

The Balkans are sometimes referred to as the Balkan peninsula as they are surrounded by the Adriatic Ionian Aegean Marmara and Black seas from the southwest, south and southeast. The Origin of the Albanians
Main article: Origin of Albanians A number of scholars consider that the Albanians are direct descendants of an Illyrian tribe that was named "Albanoi" that was located in present day Albania. Many other scholars dispute this. See Origin of Albanians . Many other scholars have rightfully claimed that the Albanians and the Illyrians are the descendants of the ancient Pelasgians, and thus their history goes back at least 4000 years before Christ. Those who support the Illyrian-Albanian continuity theory maintain that all the Illyrian tribes except the Albanians disappeared during the Early Middle Ages under the waves of migrating barbarians. A forbidding mountain homeland and resilient tribal society enabled the Albanians to survive into modern times with their identity and their Indo-European language intact.

By 1520 the Ottoman Empire, founded c.1300 by Sultan Osman I, controlled large portions of Asia, the Middle East, and most of southeast Europe. Austria and Russia attacked the northern fringes throughout the period, and the empire slowly collapsed in the 19th century as the Balkan nations emerged.

s the opening footage of Germans overtaking Polish cities in the fall of 1939 intimates, Films for the Humanities and Sciences’ newly released video, Eastern Europe, 1939-1953 , focuses on Hitler, Stalin, "high politics," military operations, and Poland. The film, now available on video, chronologically traces the political history of Eastern Europe and the Balkans up through Stalin’s death in 1953. The black and white original archival film, drawn primarily from Polish repositories, is visually arresting. Images of the dazed starving children of the Warsaw ghetto, mass graves of the Katyn Massacre victims, and the piled corpses of Polish resistance members are powerful. Nonetheless, precisely what a ghetto was or the motivations behind the Katyn Massacre and its cover-up remain unclear; the text does not do justice to the images. T his film demands a great deal from its viewer. That is to say, individuals lacking a strong background in Eastern European and Balkan history will find this film frustrating. Undoubtedly, the unfolding narrative would be easier to follow if maps were included. (The sixty-minute video features only one unlabeled map). As a result, place references such as "in the Carpathians," "Bessarabia," "in Silesia," and "on the Baltic" will confound some viewers. Similarly, some viewers will have difficulty recognizing or identifying Edvard Benes, Josip Broz Tito, Miklos Horthy, King Carol II of Romania, Ion Antonescu, or Jozef Tiso. Individual names, like place names, should appear on the screen when a figure is introduced. Complex terms such as the "intelligentsia," "the NKVD," "Chetniks," and "the Polish Government in exile" are used but never explained or placed in broader historical context.

Yugoslavism: Histories of a Failed Idea 1918-1992
Ed. by
This work aims to explore the history of the Yugoslav idea, or "Yugoslavism", between the state's existence creation in 1918 and its dissolution in the early 1990s. The key theme that emerges is that Yugoslavism was a fluid concept, understood differently at different times by different Yugoslav nations, leaders and social groups.

Preface
PERHAPS THIS BOOK should be preceded by an apology rather than a preface - an apology for presumption in undertaking singlehanded a history of the Balkan Peninsula. This task, under ideal circumstances, should be assumed by an international team of scholars. And even such a team could not hope to produce anything approaching a definitive work without a good many years of cooperative research and deliberation on the numerous basic problems in Balkan history that still remain unresolved. I began this study almost a decade ago with the hope that the inevitable shortcomings of the final product might be balanced by certain positive features. More specifically, two objectives have been kept in mind throughout the preparation of this volume. One was to synthesize and to make more generally available the great amount of monographic and periodical literature that has appeared since the period following World War I, when the currently available general Balkan histories were written. The nature and extent of this literature is indicated in the bibliography, where an attempt also has been made to point out the most pressing needs and the most promising research areas in contemporary Balkan historiography.

There were many factors that contributed to the forming of a Serb national identity by the dawn of the nation-building 19th century. These are all largely based on the legacies that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Serbian Rulers
Collection of Serbian rulers portraits from various monastery frescoes and other historical material. Medieval Royal Ornaments
Serbian rulers' ceremonial costume emerged from its Byzantine counterpart at the very moment when Serbian rulers chose to get close to Byzantium, politically as well as in matters of religion. That costume clearly shows the manner in which governmental power was comprehended and considered at the time, while simultaneously being filled with profound religious meaning. Byzantine Coinage
With subtle variety and remarkable longevity, Byzantine coinage is an excellent starting point for glimpsing into the millenial Greek Christian state, along with the Balkan Slav development that took place in the shadow and often under the auspices of the Universal Empire. Serbian Military Uniforms 1808 - 1918: A uniformed Serbian militia is mentioned at the end of the seventeenth century after the siege of Vienna in 1683, but no details are known of its dress. It can be supposed that it derived from national costumes like the uniform introduced at the end of the first half of the eighteenth century.
