The Balkans Since 1815 1815 to 1839: After the Congress of Vienna
The Ottoman Empire, having emerged from the Middle Ages predominant in the Balkans, controlled Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina at its northern fringes.
1914: Eve of the First World War
The Turks were driven from most of the Balkans in the 19th century and were replaced by rivalrous European powers. With Russian patronage, an independent Serbia was born alongside an Austrian-controlled Bosnia, where a Serbian nationalist ignited World War I by assassinating the Austrian crown prince.
    Between the Two World Wars
The Versailles conference created a unified kingdom of the south Slavs Yugoslavia. It encompassed Serbs, Croatians and Slovenians, with the capital in Belgrade and the lion1s share of influence held by Serbs. Bosnia's Muslims were not recognized as a distinct group.
Nov. 1942: Height of Axis Occupation
The Axis powers occupied Yugoslavia, creating a puppet state in Croatia ruled by local fascists who fought and butchered Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. Yugoslav Communist partisans led by Tito, as well as Serbian royalists known as Chetniks, fought the Nazis, and Tito emerged in control.
1945 to 1990: Cold War Stability
Under Tito, Yugoslavia held together as a federation of six autonomous republics, although Serbs retained great influence, notably in the military. As Communism collapsed, Serbia's President, Slobodan Milosevic, hastened Yugoslavia's disintegration with a blatantly nationalistic appeal to Serbs.

Serbs lose a key battle against the forces of the invading Ottoman Empire on the fields of Kosovo. The defeat marks the beginning of the end of Serbia's Medieval Empire. Kosovo becomes part of the Ottoman Empire. In the centuries that follow, the battle becomes the key event in Serbian national history.
Serbian uprisings secure limited autonomy from the Ottoman Empire.
    Serbia gains formal autonomy.
Serbs gain control of Kosovo in a war against the Ottoman Empire. Fearing they, too, would be partitioned, Albanian leaders in Albania declare an independent state in November 1912. Borders for the new Albanian state are drawn in 1913. The disputed region of Kosovo becomes part of Serbia.

An introduction The atrocities of the war have now been well documented, thanks in part to photographers and photojournalists, 59 of whom died while covering the conflictthe highest number of journalist casualties in a four-year period since World War II. This war was also unusual in its participants' targeting of civilians and the single fact that there were more civilian than military casualties. The brutality of this conflict is also evident in the bombing of such normally sacred (even in wartime) institutions as public markets, civilian heating sources, factories, buses, trains and hospitals. The war resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, mostly of civilians, and created millions of refugees and displaced persons. Although the leaders who fashioned the rhetoric that spurred the violence have been removed from power and the war has ended, the region remains unstable.

Former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic surrendered (pleading not guilty) to the UN on January 10, 2001 in response to an indictment for war crimes against Muslims in Bosnia in 1991 and 1992. Plavsic had become Bosnian Serb President in 1996, replacing Radovan Karadzic after he was forced from power after being indicted for war crimes, but she was defeated in the election of 1998. There continue to be international calls for Milosevic to be extradited to face charges in The Hague, but Kostunica insists that he be tried in Yugoslavia. In a meeting of European leaders in November 2000, Kostunica said that Europe should no longer defer to a non-European power (the U.S.) on issues in the Balkans. Meanwhile, there are still thousands of displaced people and shelling has left materials that include dangerous heavy metals and potentially deadly radioactive components around the region, especially in Kosovo. Needless to say, many of the region's governments remain less than stable.

Phoenix 2001 A book review by Danny Yee Misha Glenny and Mark Mazower take very different approaches to the modern history of the Balkans. Glenny, a journalist, offers a long but lively narrative of war, politics and people, with generalisations used to help make sense of that. Mazower, a historian, offers a short but insightful account of long-term processes and trends, with details used to illustrate those. Both seem reasonably objective neither is himself in the grip of any nationalist fervour and both provide references, an index, and an excellent selection of maps (essential for following the complexities of border changes). Which you prefer will depend on what you are looking for; I found reading one after the other rather instructive. In The Balkans 1804-1999 Glenny provides a lively narrative account of the last two centuries of Balkan history. The focus is on wars and political conflicts, but he also includes biographical material, with portraits of key individuals, and he quotes from contemporary documents and sources to give the reader some idea how people thought and felt at the time. The approach is chronological, with Glenny trying "to avoid reading or refracting Balkan history through the prism of the 1990s", and covers separate episodes in often largely self-contained sections. The following is a selection of highlights rather than a comprehensive summary.

A Short History of the Balkans
    Peter Mentzel
Since the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia descended into bloodshed and mayhem during the summer of 1991 a number of different historical explanations for the conflict's origins and ferocity have been written. While these accounts differ in their details, in general they paint two different pictures of Balkan history. One argues that the wars of the Yugoslav succession are the result of "ancient tribal hatreds." That is, the violence in the modern Balkans is the result of hatreds dating back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The second picture of Balkan history takes issue with this argument and offers instead a story of tolerance where each community coexisted in peace, if not harmony. This entire conversation is closely tied to the history of the development of Balkan nation-states.
    Nations and States
In an attempt to address these historiographical points, this article will take one simple starting point: the Balkan nations and Balkan nation-states are all very young. None is more than 200 years old. Thus the hatreds there cannot be "ancient." In fact, the current ethnic hatreds in the Balkans, while unfortunately very real indeed, all have their roots in the statist nationalism of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Map by B. C. Biega for About.com Author's Note The Balkan Peninsula takes its name from Bulgaria's Balkan Mountains, running westward from the Black Sea. The peninsula as a whole possesses scattered fertile valleys separated by chains of rugged mountain ranges. Intense ethnic feelings come naturally to communities which are isolated from one another by these mountainous mazes. World War I started in this region; hatreds simmering in that war's aftermath led to World War II; on the eve of a new millenium, hatreds still boiling over from the 1940's are erupting anew in this region. These are lands rich in ancient myth - the harpist/mystic, Orpheus, came from the mountains of Bulgaria near the Black Sea. Dionysus was no stranger to these wildernesses. Marija Gimbutas' " Old Europe " encompasses this region and her discoveries point to a time when these lands knew peace and cooperation, when early non-Indo-European peoples worshipped life-loving deities who appreciated beauty, joy, and inspired a wide range of sacred arts. Long suppressed by later monotheisms, those ancient deities nevertheless are still wedded to the Balkan lands. I created my MythingLinks website to focus on worldwide sacred lore and traditions. In some parts of the world, "sacred traditions" have deep, tormented roots in the distant past; when these explode violently in the immediate present and threaten to drag many peoples into ruin, it is crucial to examine both the ancient roots, their paths of transmission, and their contemporary manifestations. This is not to focus blame on the Balkans, nor to "demonize" the monotheistic and patriarchal Catholic, Orthodox, and Moslem traditions of the peoples now inhabiting that peninsula. It is, rather, to see the Balkans as a mirror of hatreds running rampant throughout the West, and to see where countries far distant from this small peninsula nevertheless bear much of the responsibility for exacerbating and manipulating old hatreds.

PERSPECTIVES The historical chronicle of the Balkan peninsula is fascinating not only for the factual record of events it encompasses, but also for the cultural and philosophical insights it provides into the current ethnic and political conflicts sweeping across the region. This section provides an overview of Balkan history and examines how that history has contributed to the current strife. Histories of Nationalism and Irredentism The current ethnic tensions in the region are driven by the twin forces of nationalism and irredentism. Nationalism, the desire of an ethnic group to have a nation of their own both combines and competes with irredentism, which is the concept that areas settled by an ethnic group should be ruled by that ethnic group. Balkan history is filled with instances of ethnic clashes caused by nationalist and irredentist motives. a province of Hungary. Hungary would also later fall under to the Ottomans in 1526, bringing all of the Balkan states under Ottoman dominion.
