Introduction
... Transnational Issue Introduction Bahrain Background: Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbors. Facing declining oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The new amir, installed in 1999, has pushed economic and political reforms and has worked to improve relations with the Shi'a community. In February 2001, Bahraini voters approved a referendum on the National Action Charter - the centerpiece of the amir's political liberalization program. In February 2002, Amir HAMAD bin Isa Al Khalifa proclaimed himself king. In October 2002, Bahrainis elected members of the lower house of Bahrain's reconstituted bicameral legislature, the National Assembly. GulfWire PERSPECTIVES NOVEMBER 9, 2002 BAHRAIN TOO, GOES TO THE POLLS [Part II] BY SCOTT DAVID McINTOSH ===========================GulfWire~~Perspectives========================= EDITORS NOTE: November 8, 2002 GulfWire published a report on Bahrain in the context of its recent parliamentary elections. That report, which focused on the Arab island-state's position in regional and international affairs, also provided context and perspective with regard to the longstanding, special, and multifaceted relationship between Bahrain and the United States. The following report, by Scott David McIntosh, of the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations, zeroes in on the elections themselves. In it, he provides analysis of the domestic dynamics of a GCC member-state that for reasons of its relatively small size and the fact that its economic resources are more meager than those of its neighbors, is insufficiently understood.

Bahrain, meaning "two seas" in Arabic, is the largest island of the archipelago. In addition to its sandy beaches, coral reefs, and renowned diving, Bahrain contains numerous archaeological sites, historical museums, mosques, and traditional markets.
The majority of the population lives on the northern third of Bahrain island, which contains the modern capital city of Manama, and the nearby island of Al Muharraq. Most of the remaining islands are tiny and uninhabited, but are well-known for the variety of migrating birds that pass through in the spring and autumn months.

(Requires Acrobat Reader DESCRIPTION We are a lively, enthusiastic and forward thinking department whose aim is to make Geography enjoyable, accessible and relevant to pupils of all ages and abilities. We use a wide variety of teaching techniques ranging from traditional whole class teaching to flexible learning through project work. We always try to supplement the students' geographical experience through use of video, CD ROM and the Internet and we make extensive use of ICT at all levels. Fieldwork is a particularly important part of our curriculum and we make a great deal of use of the local environment in Bahrain as well as having an annual trip to Nepal. This is the highlight of the year for the department and we have now enjoyed 3 exciting and demanding treks in the Annapurna region of the Himalayas. The department has a staff of 4 fully qualified specialist teachers each with their own area of expertise at 'A' Level. Examination results are consistently very good indeed and we are proud to expect and achieve the very best from our students. FACILITIES We have a very wide range of resources available to us. The department is fortunate to have it's own suite of 4 rooms each with black out and AV facilities. We have access to a number of computer suites throughout the school and we find that the integration of ICT is a particularly important area of departmental development. At Key Stage 3 we use David Waugh's Key Geography series as a basis for the Geography course supplementing with other texts where appropriate. The core GCSE text is Tomorrow's Geography although again we have a wide range of support material in the form of textbooks, videos and CD ROMs The AS and A2 courses are very well resourced and we use specialist texts depending on the topics studied.
