THE ROLE OF MUSEUMS AND HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS IN THE PROMOTION AND PRESERVATION OF THE CULTURAL PATRIMONY INTRODUCTION There are few regions of the world where migration has become such an integral part of people's existence as the Caribbean. Forced, indentured, and later voluntary migration has been the essence of Caribbean history for the past 500 years. Examining the processes of migration, colonization, exile, assimilation, evaluation, destruction and reconstruction of identity must all be part and parcel of the work of Caribbean museums today. Few institutions however, are willing to exhibit the difficult aspects of the Caribbean past. Fewer still wrestle effectively with issues of violence, riots, and the devastating effects of generations of poverty and discrimination. I am not arguing that museums focus only on the harsh and unpleasant, or depict people solely as victims of history. Nevertheless, Caribbean museums must do better job of mirroring the willingness of academic scholarship to examine the complexities and ambiguities of Caribbean life. However this will require a three way partnership between the public, the museum and the historian, a partnership which has not fully developed in most Caribbean countries, although more opportunities now exist than in the past.

Brief administrative history The International Sanitary Bureau, precursor of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau, was established by the First General International Sanitary Convention of the American Republics held in Washington, DC., in 1902. The Bureau, "according to the resolutions adopted", consisted of a board of seven health officials, residing in five countries, who were assigned the responsibility for the receipt and distribution of information on health conditions in the American Republics and to formulate sanitary agreements and regulations so that quarantine requirements would be reduced to a minimum in respect of cholera, yellow fever, bubonic plaque, smallpox and "any other serious pestilential outbreak". These functions and responsibilities were adopted both by the Second Conference of American States (1901) and by the First General International Sanitary Convention.
Five other international sanitary conferences held in the Americas between 1902 and 1920 approved resolutions to the effect that the Bureau would undertake the investigation of outbreaks of communicable diseases, the facilitation of commerce through the improvement of sanitary conditions in the sea-ports of the American Republics, through sewage disposal, drainage of the soil, and the destruction of mosquitoes and other vermin. However, resources available at the time in terms of staff, office space, travel and other expenses were not appropriate to allow compliance with these Conference resolutions.

    http://www.usc.edu/isd/archives/la/disneyland/
As TV, radio, and newspapers throughout the country cover the grand opening of Disneyland's California Adventure, and huge crowds vie for tickets, it seems like a timely moment to take a trip down memory lane and visit another grand opening: July 17, 1955, when the first crowds of eager visitors made their way across the drawbridge of Sleeping Beauty's castle into Disneyland.
Back in the early 1950s, Anaheim was a sleepy little town, and the area around it was nothing more than acres and acres of orange groves. Enter Walt Disney, the original Imagineer. Disney's initial idea was to build a park near his Burbank studio for his employees and their families, but those plans changed over time and his dream grew.
He bought over 160 acres of those sleepy orange groves around Anaheim and set about, in 1954, building his "Magic Kingdom." Original plans called for a 9 million dollar 45-acre park, but by opening day the park covered 160 acres and had cost 17 million. Opening day was a gala affair: The ceremonies were broadcast live on ABC with Art Linkletter and Robert (Bob) Cummings as hosts, with celebrities like Ronald Reagan, and VIPs like the Governor of California also in attendance.
In 1955 the park consisted of 5 "lands": Main Street, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Tomorrowland. Many of the rides were not finished. Adventureland had only one ride: the Jungle Cruise. Tomorrowland had more exhibits than rides. Landmarks we are all familiar with were absent in 1955: neither the Matterhorn nor the Monorial had been built yet. There were rides and exhibits that are now long gone: the Aluminum Hall of Fame, Rocket to the Moon, a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea exhibit (a movie tie-in!), and Space Station X-1 in Tomorrowland, and stage coach rides in Frontierland. Fantasyland had rides that are still open today: King Arthur Carousel, Snow White's Adventures, Dumbo, and the kid-terrifying Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, but was missing the Autopia (1956), and It's a Small World (1966).

History The original inhabitants of The Bahamas were the Lucayans, a tribe of the Arawak Indian group, who arrived near the turn of the 9th century. The peaceful Lucayans lived primarily off the sea, fishing and harvesting shellfish, conch, lobster and mollusks. What little remains of their culture is limited to pottery shards, petroglyphs and words such as 'canoe,' 'cannibal,' 'hammock,' 'hurricane' and 'tobacco.' Christopher Columbus planted the Spanish flag on San Salvador upon his first landfall in the Americas in 1492. Three years later, Spanish colonialists established the first settlement in the archipelago, serving as a terminus for Lucayan Indians enslaved by the Spaniards for shipment to Hispaniola. Within 25 years, the entire Lucayan population of 50,000 was gone, and the Spanish eventually abandoned the settlement. In 1513 the Spaniard Juan Ponce de Leon sailed through the archipelago searching for the fabled Fountain of Youth. Instead he ran into the fast-moving Gulf Stream, which whisked him to Florida and his 'discovery' of North America. Soon Spanish galleons were passing by the reef-encrusted Bahamas laden with treasure, from the empires of Central and South America, bound for Spain. Many foundered, and the waters of the archipelago were littered with wrecks. Tales of treasure lured pirates, and they used the Bahamian islands as hideaways and bases. For the most part, the islands remained unsettled and unclaimed until over a century later, when King Charles I of England granted them to his attorney general.

    Department of Archives
Bahamas I have been involved with the preservation of Bahamian heritage and culture since the late 1960s when I began the survey of the records and archives of The Bahamas. Since that time much has happened. The Bahamas established a Public Records Office (National Archives) in 1971. In 1972, the office promulgated rules to regulate searches and inspections of records, the destruction and disposal of public records, and the setting of fees for copying services. Over the next several years, the records and archives were identified, selected, sorted, and listed, staff were trained in various aspects of the work, a repair-bindery and a microfilming program were established, a Research Room became operational, and a Records Management Program was established. A Guide to the Archives was published in 1973. From a very early time in the Archives' existence, exhibitions were held annually and facsimile booklets printed and distributed to schools and sold to the general public. An Oral History Program was also begun by interviewing and recording on cassette tapes scores of senior citizens. Some transcriptions were completed. In the absence of a National Museum System, the Department of Archives was designated as the organization in charge of the Bahamas' material heritage – its historic buildings and sites, and its archaeology.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS THE COMMONWEALTH CARIBBEAN is the term applied to the English- speaking islands in the Carribbean and the mainland nations of Belize (formerly British Honduras) and Guyana (formerly British Guiana) that once constituted the Caribbean portion of the British Empire. This volume examines only the islands of the Commonwealth Caribbean, which are Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Windward Islands (Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada), Barbados, the Leeward Islands (Antigua and Barbuda, St. Christopher [hereafter, St. Kitts] and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat), and the so-called Northern Islands (the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands). To the casual observer, these islands might appear to be too disparate to allow for a common discussion. Consider, for instance, the differences in population, size, income, ethnic composition, and political status among the various islands. Anguilla's 7,000 residents live on an island totaling 91 square kilometers, whereas Jamaica has a population of 2.3 million and a territory of nearly 11,000 square kilometers. The per capita gross domestic product (GDPsee Glossary) of the Cayman Islands is nearly fourteen times as large as that of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Trinidad and Tobago's population is evenly divided between blacks and East Indians, a pattern quite different from that on the other islands, on which blacks constitute an overwhelming majority. Although most of the islands are independent nations, five (the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands) remain British dependencies.

To this end in mid-1962 a Common Services Conference was called to take decisions on these services, the major ones among them being the University of the West Indies (UWI), founded in 1948 and the Regional Shipping Services set up during the Federation to control the operation of the two ships donated in 1962 by the government of Canada - the Federal Palm and the Federal Maple. The Caribbean Meteorological Service was established one year after, in 1963 and along with the UWI and the Regional Shipping Service, represented the heart of Caribbean cooperation directly after the end of the Federation.
