In 1492, Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World on the island of San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. After observing the shallow sea around the islands, he said "baja mar" (meaning low water or sea), and effectively named the area The Bahamas, or The Islands of the Shallow Sea.
Since they were located close to Florida and well-travelled shipping channels, The Islands of the Bahamas caught the attention of explorers, settlers, invaders and traders. These people shaped the colourful history of The Bahamas and made the country what it is today.

The Bahamas include about 700 different islands and over 2,000 keys. The Bahamas extend for 750 miles in an arc. They were formed by rising coral. The climates are mostly semitropical. The rainfall each year is about 50 inches. Some of the islands are often short of rainfall. But in the fall hurricanes come through with very heavy rain and strong gusty winds. The main islands include Acklins, Andros, Cat, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama, Great Abaco, Great Exuma, Great Inagua, Little Abaco, New Providence, and San Salvador. Geography of the Bahamas
The Bahama Islands are the result of coral reefs which become dry land when the sea level dropped hundreds of centuries ago.
Geographically considered part of the Caribbean, the archipelago that encompasses the Islands of The Bahamas lies in the Atlantic Ocean, extending more than 650 miles from the eastern coast of Florida to the southeastern tip of Cuba. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the Great Bahama Bank and through the Island of Great Exuma. The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is a group of some 700 Islands and nearly 2,500 small islets or cays. Approximately 30 of these Islands are inhabited.
The two major population centers are the capital, Nassau which is located on New Providence Island and Freeport, located on Grand Bahama Island. The other populated Islands and cays are called Family Islands.
he Islands of The Bahamas stretch Southeast off the Florida coast, the closest Family Island to the U.S. mainland being Bimini, about 50 miles off the coast of South Florida. The other Islands stretch across roughly 100,000 square miles of ocean, beginning at their northernmost point about 175 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida and winding nearly 750 miles to the southeast where they are within 50 miles of Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti).

Bahamas Vacations
Less than 100 miles from Florida, the jewels of the Bahamian islands float in turquoise waters unlike any throughout the Caribbean. Bustling cities with nightlife and casinos. Deserted Out Islands with only a resort as inhabitants. Parasailing, waterskiing, diving, bonefishing, or relaxing on a pink sand beach with your favorite book. Whatever you are looking for, one of the 700 islands of the Bahamas is sure to have it. History The first known settlers of The Islands of the Bahamas were the Lucayan Indians, a subgroup of the Arawaks found throughout the Caribbean, in the 10th century. Chased out of the Lesser Antilles (which includes many of our island destinations) by the warrior Caribs, these peaceful Indians were able to settle in thatch huts and farm the Bahamian Islands. However, in 1492 Christopher Columbus arrived and within 25 years, the Lucayans were completely wiped out by slavery and disease. Columbus named the area "baja mar," meaning "shallow water or sea." 150 years later, English Puritans arrived on the island now known as Eleuthera, searching for religious freedom. Another century later, American colonists still holding loyalties to Britain left their newly independent nation. These loyalists brought with them Colonial building skills, shipbuilding and agricultural expertise, and slaves.

Bimini

Bimini is a group of small islands in the Bahamas. Bimini is only 50 miles east of Miami Beach, Florida. Bimini has three main islands: North Bimini, South Bimini, and East Bimini. These coral islands are small, only 7 miles long and only 200 yards wide at their narrowest. Perched at the west end of the Bahamas Bank, Bimini is surrounded by shallow water (only 20 to 30 feet deep) to the north, south, and east. To the west, the Gulf Stream current flows north through the deep water between Miami and Bimini, where the ocean is over 6000 feet deep. The Gulf Stream brings hundreds of marine animals near to the shores of Bimini. North Bimini is long, flat, and narrow. In this picture you can see the houses and buildings of Alice Town as we fly over the harbor between North Bimini and East Bimini. Notice how clear the water is in the shallow harbor. The shallow calm harbor was a shelter for pirates in the early days of the Caribbean. We're looking out the airplane window toward the west, so the water in the distance is the Gulf Stream, and Miami is just over the horizon in the distance. Note the darker, deeper water at the bottom of this photograph. The shallow reefs are nurseries for young fish.
