Country Profile

Flag
of Bahamas
Background:
The Bahamas extends 760 miles from the coast of Florida on the north-west almost to Haiti on the south-east. The group consists of 700 islands, of which 30 are inhabited, and about 2,400 cays (coral reefs). When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492 on San Salvador, The Islands Of The Bahamas were inhabited by Lucayans, a subgroup of Arawak indians. Slavery, disease and other hardships wiped out the entire tribe within 25 years of Columbus' arrival. British settlement in The Bahamas was established in 1647 by a group of English settlers in search for religious freedom, the Company of Eleutheran Adventurers, who organized a community on what is now the island of Eleuthera; in 1783 the Islands Of The Bahamas became a British colony.

The Bahamas The Country Geography:
The Bahamas is an archipelago of approximately 700 flat, lowlying islands in the western Atlantic Ocean. It is located between 72° to 79° western geographic longitude and 21° to 27° northern geographic latitude and extends from eighty kilometers east of Florida to eighty kilometers northeast of Cuba. In addition to the United States and Cuba, neighbors of the Bahamas include Haiti and the Turks and Caicos Islands; both are located to the southeast of the Bahamas. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the middle of the archipelago, passing across the lower part of Great Exuma Island and the upper part of Long Island. Although the total area of the archipelago is 13,939 square kilometers (5380 square miles) , the islands are sprawled over an area of approximately 259,000 square kilometers. The islands are surface projections of two oceanic banks, the Little Bahama Bank and the Great Bahama Bank. The highest point is only sixty-three meters above sea level on Cat Island; the island of New Providence, where the capital city of Nassau (77°22' W and 25°03' N) is located, reaches a maximum elevation of only thirty-seven meters.

Over 700 islands comprise the Islands of the Bahamas. With so many places to choose from, it is hard to decide which one to visit first. To make your decision easier, read the geographical descriptions below and follow their links to the maps showing cities and attractions. Bahamas Geography
Some commonly asked questions and answers about the islands, the climate, weather and the geography of the Bahamas.
The Abaco Islands consist of one main island and several cays, or islets - some of which are deserted. It is also the home of Treasure Cay, recognized as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. With so many secluded places to drop anchor, it is no wonder that it is a favorite with sailors. It is also the boat building capital of the Islands of the Bahamas.
Andros, the largest island in The Bahamas, boasts the third-largest coral reef in the world, making it ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling. It is the bonefishing capital of the world and is famous for producing Androsia, a handmade batik fabric.
The Bimini Islands include North Bimini, South Bimini and a bunch of tiny cays sprinkling southward. Only 50 miles from Miami, these islands are known as the game fishing capital of the world. They are also the former haunt of Ernest Hemingway, who used them as the setting for his book, Islands in the Stream.
