New Bahamian Poetry book: "Fattening Up Frog For Snake" is already breaking records in Nassau. There have been books stores who have had to reorder extra stock due to the enormous demand.
Book stores' managers are enthusiastically pushing the books sales. Stores are calling the book a 'phenomenon,' due to how fast this Bahamian book of poetry is actually leaving the stores. "Fattening up Frog for Snake" is being described as a must read book of poetry for the summer.
In fact, tourists down town are overwhelmingly delighted by the book's cover and name. "Fattening up Frog for Snake" has been complimented as being one of the better books of poetry originating from the Bahamas.
Currently, the book is being considered for introduction into the Bahamian school curriculum. The book is already in most of the book stores and libraries in Nassau and steps are being made to ensure that the family Islands are not being left out.

Welcome to the Bahamas I invite you to join us in this exciting international conference as we share midwifery practices, problems and projects with our Caribbean sisters in Nassau. The Bahamian people are some of the warmest and most welcoming people of the world. The "Bahaman Handshake" is a hug. After a "handshake" you definitely have a new friend. We will share the joy, love and spirituality inherent in both midwifery and the Bahamas. We will also learn new ways of dealing with pregnancy, labor and birth while trying to solve the difficulties in our profession. In our time together let's share Bahamian hospitality, exceptional learning opportunities and joyous fun. This is an excellent international networking opportunity. We hope you will make many new friends.

Cultural Values
  • Religion is an important part of their lives and churches are plentiful Weddings and funerals in the Bahamas are especially important social events. People begin celebrating marriage weeks before the official ceremony begins, and the passing of loved ones is commemorated by parties long after they are gone
    Christianity
Health Care Values
  • Some Cat Islanders hang bottles from trees to protect themselves and their families from evil spirits They use the aloe Vera plant, for instance, to cure burns, relieve pain, and as a tonic and laxative. Cat Islanders, with their reputation for longevity, attribute bush medicine with keeping them healthy. They prepare internal and external remedies to relieve such symptoms as headaches, high blood pressure, diabetes, coughs, itching, etc
Diet
  • Seafood is the staple of the Bahamian diet. Conch (pronounced "konk") is a large type of ocean mollusk that has firm, white, peach-fringed meat. Fresh, uncooked conch is delicious; the conch meat is scored with a knife, and limejuice and spices are sprinkled over the meat. It can also be deep-fried (called "cracked conch"), steamed, added to soups, salads and stews or made into conch chowder and conch fritters. The Bahamian "rock lobster" is a spiny variety without claws that is served broiled, minced or used in salads. Other delicacies include boiled or baked land crabs, which can be seen, before they are cooked, running across the roads after dark.

In June of 2002, one faculty member with nineteen students from Georgia Southern University, Brandies University and the University of Texas traveled to Freeport, Grand Bahamas, Nassau, New Province, and to Paradise Island, Bahamas to study the Bahamian culture and health care in the Bahamas. In coordinating the trip, I worked closely with the People to People Program in Bahamas and the chair of the School of Nursing, College of Bahamas, Nassau, Bahamas. The trip was phenomenal and a resounding success! Our group was blessed and partly hosted by the People to People program who welcomed us generously, invited us to their homes and their churches and let us spend hours and days interviewing them. We spent time with many Bahamian families and ate some of the best tasting meals generously served by these families. The students had many cultural exposures and experiences. According to the majority of our students (92 percent) who went on this trip, “Bahamians are some of the friendliest people we have ever met.” Several wrote in their daily log or journal, “I found that their culture is very family oriented.” “They took us into their homes knowing that we were a group of strangers and cooked us huge Bahamian feasts consisting of conch, snappers, crab, macaroni and cheese, salads, fruits, and of course Bahamas Mama, their famous rum drink.” “I have never seen hospitality as generous as theirs.”

Subject: Bahamian CULTURE Name: Shark Date Posted: Nov 27, 04 - 5:25 AM Message: Are The Islands of The Bahamas – a former British colony and now a member of the Commonwealth – not exactly shining examples of civilisation, are they? Indeed, apart from offering a expensive tourist product what do the Bahamas contribute? 60 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (CDP) – which is about $3 billion (drug trafficking not included) – comes from tourism related activities.
The Bahamas profits from its location specially – starting 60 miles off the coast of South Florida and stretching as far south as Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. What about bad attitudes, low level of service and wide spread crime, corruption, injustice as well as money laundering? And how should we value the wide spread drug trafficking?
Bahamians put under the rug that the they loathe Americans and other nationallities. What for? We have to consider that many citizens live due to the Bahamian fiscal policy (no income taxes but high duties) on the expenses of other countries. The Bahamas enjoys a per capita income that is among the world's top 30, but there are imbalances in the distribution of wealth. Some Bahamians wonder that according to the World Bank (2001) there is an average annual income of almost 15,000 $

Junkanoo. For the Bahamian it goes beyond the limited concept of "festival" or "Mardi Gras." In The Bahamas the very word conjures visceral experience of roots, kaleidoscopic color combinations and sense-invading rhythm and movement, all meeting in a seamless bond that influences the lives of many beyond the showy holiday parade.
Soon, others outside our national boundaries will begin to touch the passion and energy of Junkanoo through an extraordinary series of paintings collectively known as Junkanoo Jam Jubilee, work of master Bahamian artists Stan and Jackson Burnside and John Beadle.
All acrylic on canvas, ranging in size from about 36x24 inches to astonishing 52x150 inches of the title piece, Enigmatic Funkification, the paintings are the third collection in the series called Jammin', launched by these brilliant colorists about four years ago. An image from Jammin' II represents The Bahamas in Macmillan's new 37-volume Dictionary of Art. Apart from the obvious gratification to the eye of the discerning viewer, the Jammin paintings have earned a place in Bahamian art history for another reason: they have launched a new genre. Burnside, Burnside and Beadle's unique interpretation of abstract expressionism has begun to influence the production of a number of Bahamian artists.

JUNKANOO - Festival of the Bahamas - E. Clement Bethel (Edited and expanded by Nicolette Bethel), Macmillan Education Ltd, London, l991. Having fallen in love with Junkanoo at first sight during my initial attendance at this vibrant elebration, I longed to delve into the historical roots of this magnificent ancestral event. While in Nassau, I usually drop by the Island Bookshop on Bay Street to see what literary goodies they've added to their Bahamian and Caribbean section since my last visit. I was absolutely delighted to find JUNKANOO - Festival of the Bahamas among the current offerings. Immediately purchased this informative cultural work. Couldn't wait until I got home to read it. Spent a few hours during my cooling-out periods in Nassau reading the work as well as the flight hours on the air-ride back to New York. Penned by the late E. Clement Bethel, an ethnomusicologist and expert on Bahamian culture, the work was completed and carried to new dimensions by his daughter, Nassauvian educator, Nicolette Bethel, this work is an invaluable resource on Junkanoo as it relates varied aspects of the Carnival's historical and political linkages, including its connection to diaspora festivals in Bermuda, the Caribbean, and the l9th century John Kuner festivities in North Carolina. The Bethels' work does not simply deal with the historical roots of Junkanoo but provide a more wide-ranging glimpse into the entire history of the Bahamas, from the indigenous Lucayan presence to the African and European immigration to the Bahamas' shores to the immigration of liberated Africans and the American loyalists of the Revolutionary War era who also brought their slaves onto the island with them.

Enterprising Slaves and Master Pirates: Understanding Economic Life in the Bahamas
Storr, Virgil Henry
Published by EH.NET (July 2005) Virgil Henry Storr, Enterprising Slaves and Master Pirates: Understanding Economic Life in the Bahamas . New York: Peter Lang, 2004. 147 pp. $55.95 (cloth), ISBN: 0-8204-7075-0. Reviewed for EH.NET by Jenny B. Wahl, Department of Economics, Carleton College. Virgil Storr wants to tell us a story. Like all good stories, his begins with "Once upon a time," features memorable figures like Brer Rabbit and Blackbeard, and turns pleasing phrases ("footprints crisscross in pearl colored sand," p. 43, "Women, beautiful like all grandmothers are beautiful," p. 83). Engaging as the story is, ultimately it wears thin. By steering clear of quantitative data and statistics, Storr loses a chance to convince readers that he recounts more than just a story. The title tells most of the tale. Storr views present-day Bahamian economic enterprises as heirs of two traditions: the piracy of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and the enslavement of the eighteenth and nineteenth. He argues that both traditions were different in the Bahamas than elsewhere; thus, the Bahamas today little resembles its West Indian neighbors. Storr starts by telling us that context matters. He reveals his devotion to Max Weber, the Austrians, and his dissertation advisors in Chapter 2, which refers to Indian gatherer-hunters, Canadian businessmen, Indonesian traders, and Shakespeare. The point of this chapter seems to be that, to understand the economic structure of a particular community and the entrepreneurs that belong to it, we should "find out which stories are told ... myths that are widely shared and believed ... [and] heroes that are admired" (p. 35). Bahamian stories suggest an "ideal type" of entrepreneur who wishes to profiteer rather than to profit, according to Storr.

Buddy Up in the Bahamas: A Cultural Tour
By Bill Belleville (Photo: Courtesy, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism)
For folks who are quite content with an Accidental Tourist style of travel, a casual brush with a bartender or maid or cab driver is enough. But for those eager to better understand the culture of the destination they visit, there is a yearning for a more authentic connection with locals. Some extroverted visitors are simply better than others at making new friends; but for the average folks, there is another solution:
"People to People" is a program created by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism intended to give visitors, in their words, "a genuine and informal view of Bahamian hospitality and culture as you might see it when visiting a friend."
For instance, during a recent visit to Cat Island, I met Sylvia Larramore-Crawford, a writer from Nassau who greatly appreciated Cat's own cultural nuances. We drove around and met her neighbors, had lunch and dinner at her house, and later, visited a local club where Sylvia knew everyone, musicians and customers alike. We were even invited to church with Sylvia on Sunday (unfortunately, we had to leave before then).
