Bahamas History and Culture
History The earliest known Bahamians were Lucayans (who named the island chain after themselves), as well as Caribs and Arawaks. During his 1492 voyage to the "New" World, Christopher Columbus landed on either Guanahani (now San Salvador) or a more Southerly Island called Samana Cay. Eventually, the island group came to be known as Bahama, derived from baja mar, meaning "shallow sea" in Spanish. Caribs and Arawaks were enslaved by the newly arrived Europeans.

About Grand Bahamians Many of the 50,000 people on Grand Bahama Island were not born here. They hail from all over The Islands of The Bahamas. Locals in Freeport/Lucaya can give you a good understanding of the nuances of Bahamians in general. Grand Bahamians in particular, however, are probably best known for their entrepreneurship and a devotion to the great outdoors. Knowing a bit of history and were founded by former slaves. These towns are almost invariably named after their founders or a former slave owner. Colorful Junkanoo , the most significant festival on the island, also hails from the days of slavery, when slaves were given a special holiday on the day after Christmas. The past and its traditions are very important to Grand Bahamians, as is a healthy dose of religion. Visitors are welcome to attend any of the number of churches on the island.

Dear Mr. Benjamir: We would like you to know how enjoyable our vacation was in late January at the Club Peace and Plenty in George Town, Great Exuma Island. We also stayed at Club Peace and Plenty about three years ago, in fact it was during the first week in February 2002. We had such a splendid time there that we decided to return because we enjoyed the friendly residents, the water, and the perfect climate at that time of the year.
We love the island and Club Peace and Plenty because of its casualness and because it is an ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives: a place where we can truly relax. We could stay at resorts in Florida but George Town and Club Peace and Plenty are better. The complex has a history, atmosphere, and a richness that only Club Peace and Plenty can have. Thank you for restoring it to its old beauty without changing .it too drastically so as to loose its unique character. It is the unspoiled beauty that causes us to be so comfortable along with everyone we meet being so cordial and friendly and always willing to share information take the time to talk make us feel we are truly welcome.
We enjoyed our recent visit to Exuma, staying as always, at Peace and Plenty where, despite the renovations we benefited from the usual hospitable welcome. Indeed, we and our friends from New York visit regularly as you know and we are all impressed that the expansion of your Hotel has not changed the ethos of Bahamian culture within dearly pervades the ambience of Peace and Plenty.

Blacks make up four-fifths of the population of the Bahamas. Many of them are descended from slaves. They were brought to the Bahamas by British loyalists. Most of them left the United States after the Revolutionary War. The rest that remained were whites and mulattoes (persons of mixed black and white ancestry). Some of their religious groups are Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, and Roman Catholic. Kids from ages five to 14 have to go to school. Economy About the Authors Bibliography Other Links ... Home

Bahamas
Consisting of 700 islands and cays, The Islands Of The Bahamas is a 100,000-sq-mile archipelago that extends over 500 miles of some of the clearest water in the world. Some of the more inhabited islands include Andros, Abaco, Grand Bahama, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Bimini, San Salvador, and New Providence. Nassau, New Providence is the country's capital. Each island has it’s own diversity that continues beyond geography, contributing to the distinct Bahamian heritage and culture. Today the population of The Bahamas is approximately 300,000.
History
In the 10th century, Lucayan Indians, a subgroup of the Arawaks, settled in The Islands Of The Bahamas until the arrival of Christopher Columbus. Columbus made his first landfall in the New World on the island of San Salvador in the year 1492. After observing the shallow sea around the islands, he said "baja mar" (shallow water or sea), and thus named The Bahamas 'The Islands of the Shallow Sea'. In 1648, a group of English Puritans, also known as the "Eleutheran Adventurers", arrived in The Bahamas in their quest for religious freedom. The adventurers gave the island (Eleuthera) its name, however as time went on the settlers experienced food shortages and a lack of proper supplies. The late 1600s to the early 1700s were the golden age for pirates and privateers. Most of the ones you've heard about, like Sir Francis Drake and Blackbeard used The Islands Of The Bahamas as their port at one time or another.

Day 1 “Slave History of the Bahamian Archipelago”
Key Note Speaker
Dr Gail Saunders - Director General of Heritage, Bahamas
Bahamian Slave Rebels

As Hilary Beckles and Michael Craton, among others, have argued, resistance both violent and non-violent, was endemic to slave society in the West Indies. The enslaved throughout the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, challenged the Plantocracy in passive, day-to-day, individual and collective resistance.
Despite the collapse of the cotton plantations in the Bahamas which caused slave owners to turn to older Bahamian industries such as raising stock, salt-raking and growing subsistence crops, Bahamian slaves rebelled. The paper will examine three revolts which occurred shortly before emancipation in the Out Islands of Exuma, Cat Island and San Salvador, concentrating on the leaders, Pompey, Dick and Alick who defied their owners for varying reasons.
Aptheker’s theory of revolutionary tradition among slaves stood true for the Bahamas. Bahamian slaves were not docile nor satisfied with their status. Their ultimate and fundamental goal was freedom.
