The Bahamas
History of The Bahamas Geography played a part in Bahamian history. In 1492, Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World on the island of San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. After observing the shallow sea around the islands, he said "baja mar" (low water or sea), and effectively named the area The Bahamas, or The Islands of the Shallow Sea. Since it was located close to Florida and well-travelled shipping channels, The Islands Of The Bahamas caught the attention of explorers, settlers, invaders and traders. These people shaped the colourful history of The Bahamas and made the country what it is today.
Our Culture Bahamian culture is like no other. It has embraced a panorama of native customs of the indigenous "Indian" people who populated The Islands Of The Bahamas over the eons. Then Bahamian culture suddenly underwent an abrupt change beginning in 1648 when English Puritans settled on the island of Eleuthera. It has further evolved over the past four centuries, witnessing the arrival of Bermudan slaves and free blacks, British Loyalists (accompanied by slaves) fleeing America after the War of Independence, freed Africans from slave ships, Black Seminoles from Florida, people from other Caribbean islands, as well as Chinese, Syrian and Greek immigrants. These people with their different backgrounds, traditions and beliefs shaped Bahamian culture into the unique, colorful patchwork of life and lifestyles that it is today.

Baha Mar executives get cross-cultural training
By MINDELL SMALL,Guardian Staff Reporter mindell@nasguard.com Expatriate executives of Baha Mar Development Company Ltd and Cable Beach Resorts recently participated in a Bahahost cross-cultural seminar designed to bridge cultural boundaries and improve corporate communication and productivity. On April 6, Baha Mar Chairman, Sarkis Izmirlian signed the Heads of Agreement with the Government for the redevelopment of the Cable Beach strip to include the construction of a $1.2 billion Las Vegas-style mega resort. Major training was a part of that agreement as the company pledged to invest an initial $15 million in employee skills improvement exercises. Baha Mar also saw advantages in training its expatriates about Bahamian culture to enable them to form better relations with staff. They therefore chose the Bahamahost programme, a hospitality industry-training initiative developed by the Ministry of Tourism in 1978, which focuses on interpersonal skills development and offers an in-depth look at defining aspects of Bahamian culture. "It was really an eye-opener for them," said Valerie Carpenter, Ministry of Tourism Industry Training Manager and organiser of the all-day event. "They all knew Cable Beach, but not necessarily about the rest of The Bahamas. This first seminar was geared toward giving them a better handle on the culture of The Bahamas and the importance of tourism to the economy. In the future, we're hoping to conduct further training with this group."

Cultural festival for Delaporte
By LaShonne Outten,Guardian Staff Reporter The Delaporte Community is doing it again. With the immense success of its cultural festival last year, the member of parliament for Delaporte, Neville Wisdom, and the Delaporte Comm-unity Association anticipate this year's festival - which will be held August 27- to be better than ever. Under the theme 'We are one people' this event is in honour of the late Alvin 'Tommy' Thompson, the first black hotel manager in The Bahamas and a founding member of the Delaporte Community Association. The aim of the Cultural Fest is to bring residents and tourists together in a festive atmosphere. An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 Bahamians and tourists are expected to attend the event. With the proceeds from last year's fair a new bus for the Cable Beach Police station was purchased. However this year the Association will furnish Delaporte's Community Centre with 10 to 15 computers. "This is yet another initiative by the Association that will go a long way in continuing to create and encourage community development," said Minister Wisdom.

The natural beauty of the Bahamas shines in it's pristine white beaches, aquamarine waters, and lush vegetation. These natural features, coupled with a sunny climate, have made it a premier warm weather destination, and the nation welcomes in excess of three million visitors per year.
The original inhabitants of the Bahamas were the Lucayan Indians, who were destroyed by the Spanish after Columbus visited the Bahamas in 1492. Over the centuries, the Bahamas has welcomed inhabitants from all over the world, and this unique mix of cultures has resulted in a strong Bahamian culture, which has been able to successfully withstand the neighboring influences of other more powerful nations. Many of the islands of the Bahamas have distinctive sub cultures, which delight the visitor in search of a cultural experience.
By far the strongest cultural influence in the Bahamas is African, which originates in the influx of slaves to these islands. Of the traditions passed down through the centuries, none is as vibrant and dynamic as Junkanoo.
Once a British colony, the Bahamas became independent in 1973. This young nation is a unique blend of the modern and its past legacy, The Bahamas....it just keeps getting better!

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Bahamas - Culture Most people,
when they think of The Bahamas, think of a single island. Or an area. Wrong.
The Bahamas is a country. A country of 700 different islands and cays, stretching southeast off the Florida coast. And if you've been thinking about an island vacation, you won't find more islands, or more interesting islands, than right here in the country of 700 islands and cays. Our islands differ physically: pine forests, white sandy beaches, limestone caves, lush plantations, bone fishing flats and the world's third largest barrier reef. They differ historically: Indigenous Arawak Indians, Seminole Indians from Florida, Eleutheran Adventurers from England, post-Revolutionary planters from Carolina and pirates all settled here. Even Columbus paid us a visit in 1492. And because each of our islands retains its individual character, each has something unique and unexpected to contribute to your island vacation. We've got islands so secluded, only the lighthouse keeper has a telephone. Islands where everything swings from casino to golf course. Islands for the country-club set, where tennis overlooks mile-long beaches. Islands bustling with colonial charm. Islands for frogman and islands for fisherman. Even our islands have islands- a Sunfish sail from nearly any beach can become a voyage of discovery. Think about it. We're bound to have more beaches. More water sports. More golf and tennis. More everything you come to the islands for. And because nature keeps just enough separation between our islands experiences, you can really get into the ones you choose.

The 275,000 people who live in The Bahamas are predominantly of West African descent. Their ancestors were slaves brought to the islands to work the cotton plantations until 1834, when Britain abolished slavery in all its territories. Most white residents of are descendants of the first English settlers, who emigrated from Bermuda in 1647 to gain religious freedom. Some are also related to the Loyalists who fled the southern United States during the American Revolution and built enormous plantations here. After the abolition of slavery, life in the islands changed drastically. The plantations were dissolved, and both blacks and whites turned to the bountiful sea (sponging and fishing) or tried to farm. The lack of fertile cropland prompted the islanders to become a nation of seafarers, and Bahamians used these skills to great advantage during the days of shipwrecking, gun running, and Prohibition. Bahamians take great pride in their past , especially their names, which are indicative of a rich cultural legacy. There are many common names like the Gibsons, reputedly from Scotland; the Alburys, Malones and Russells, said to be Irish Loyalists; and the Eleuthera Bethels, who say they came with those zealous adventurers years ago. It has been said that the Bethels once spelled their name with two 'l's', but removed one because of their religious convictions. The Black Bahamians' roots go back just as far, as evidenced by the many who took the name "Rolle," after Lord Rolle, a wealthy and much-loved planter in

But where do people get this mindset that a country does not have any culture. That is in fact impossible. Culture shapes our everyday lives, no matter which country you reside. Every culture is in fact a hybrid sufficed to say. What do you giys think about the comment. It ticked me off a bit, becasue I feel ppl know better, no matter where they are from. CG 05-15-05, - 09:07 AM Of course every country has a culture! The trouble is we take great pains not to learn about them because we see ours as the best, if not the only.
When I was a kid in school (here in the Bahamas) we spent hours and hours studying British history and culture and about half an hour on the rest of the world! If a student was to be excused to go to the Bathroom, he would miss the entire history of the Caribbean!
