by Ira Rifkin, Religion News Service (Feb. 1997). See also: For ex-Baha'i Juan Cole, though, this year's feast will be anything but festive.
Cole, a professor of Middle East history at the University of Michigan, is among the nation's leading experts on the faith. Until last May, when he formally resigned from the movement, he had been a Baha'i for 25 years. Now, however, he counts himself among a small but influential group of past and present liberal Baha'is angry over what they say is the hijacking of the faith by a cadre of conservative leaders more interested in preserving their authority than the Baha'i principle of ''independent investigation of reality.''
That principle is among the core tenets of the Baha'i faith first articulated by its founder, the l9th-century Persian prophet known as Baha'u'llah (the Glory of God) and who is revered by the faithful as an incarnation of God akin to Jesus.

The Covenant Part I Contact Us Bahai's Under the Provisions of the Covenant P.O. Box 65 Missoula, Montana 59806 The Baha'i Faith is the fulfillment and answer to the Lord's Prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. J esus had the people pray for the coming of the Kingdom of God on Earth and the Bahai Faith is the answer to that prayer. Jesus Christ was a Messiah, as the word Christ means Messiah, or specifically Messiah Ben David which, when translated is The Anointed Son of David. Jesus was a descendant of David who was anointed with the Holy Spirit and had the mission of proclaiming the coming of the Kingdom of God on Earth. Jesus also told us of the One who would actually bring this kingdom in the future, who would be the Second Coming of Christ, or another descendant of David anointed with the Holy Spirit. The 2nd Christ has come fulfilling prophecy by Name, Date, Address and Mission being seated on the Throne of David and bringing an everlasting dynasty of Davidic kings as promised by God in the book of Psalms.

    The Baha'i Faith
I was an enrolled member of the Baha'i community from 1985-1999. In 1999, I resigned my membership but still continue to practice my faith privately. For the story of why I left see my essay My Life in the Baha'i Community , which is elsewhere in this site. Below I have included both official and unofficial viewpoints. I have also included documents related to the current conflict between the Baha'i Administration and liberal intellectuals. This is not an exhaustive list, but should give the reader a good overview of the situation. For more information, check out H-Bahai, Juan Cole's website, the Freedom of Conscience Page, and the Baha'i Library, all of which are listed below. This conflict came to a head in 1996, when the Baha'i leadership cracked down on an academic email forum called Talisman, threatening its most prominent posters with being declared "covenant-breakers".(Which would impose the penalty of shunning.) While several of the active posters there were silenced, some are still active, and H-Baha'i, talisman9, and Zuhur19 can be considered direct descendents of the old Talisman list. It is my belief that this attempt to silence the voices of sincere believers is a direct violation of the fundamental Baha'i principle of the individual investigation of truth, upheld in our scriptures.

Faiths and denominations vary widely in their attitudes toward homosexuality; some religious communities hold largely to SideA or SideB , while others are severely divided in their beliefs. The articles below show the many religious perspectives on this issue, and demonstrate ways in which people of various faiths and denominations are attempting to bridge the divide. Two types of articles are listed. Articles listed under Beliefs either give a general overview of the perspectives within a particular community of faith, or else they argue in favor of SideA or SideB. Articles listed under Bridges may be written from SideA, SideB, both sides, or neither side; their common factor is that they call for or contain discussions between both sides in this important issue. It should be emphasized that the Bridges articles are not listed separately as a way to indicate that they are superior to the Beliefs articles. Both types of articles can advance our knowledge in this area, and both can retard it.

The origin of the Baha'i faith can be traced to the city of Shiraz in southwest Iran, where, in 1844, Sayyid Ali Muhammad Shirazi confided to a select group of Shaykhi Shi'a Muslims that he was the Bab, the gate to the Hidden Imam of the Shi'a. The Bab took eighteen Shaykhis as his disciples, whom he called the "Letters of the Living." (1) The Babi movement met with much official resistance, both from Qajar and clerical authorities, as it recruited new adherents and became a significant insurgency movement. In an effort to quash the insurrections erupting in parts of Iran, the Qajar government executed the Bab on July 9, 1850. (2)
