Religion and science are the two wings upon which a man's intelligence can soar into the heights, with which the human soul can progress. It is not possible to fly with one wing alone! Should a man try to fly with the wing of religion alone he would quickly fall into the quagmire of superstition, whilst on the other hand, with the wing of science alone he would also make no progress, but fall into the despairing slough of materialism Last updated 4 April 2005 http://www.bloomington.in.us/~bahai/

The Baha'i Faith has three underlying principles, that there is one God, that this God has been the inspiration for all the major religions that have appeared in history, and that mankind is one family. This God has been known by many names in history, including Jehovah, Allah, Brahma, etc. Baha'is believe there is one reality behind these names and that Moses, Krishna, Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad were all inspired by this one God. Baha'u'llah, the founding prophet of the Baha'i Faith, is recognised by the Baha'is as God's prophet for this day.

This is a brilliant century. Eyes are now open to the beauty of the oneness of humanity, of love and of brotherhood. The darkness of suppression will disappear and the light of unity will shine. We cannot bring love and unity to pass merely by talking of it. Knowledge is not enough. Wealth, science, education are good, we know: but we must also work and study to bring to maturity the fruit of knowledge. (Abdu'l-Baha, Abdu'l-Baha in London, p. 54)

Here Kevin states his perspective:
Lakota tradition is a gift from God, and our way is based upon the manifestation of the maiden, White Buffalo Calf Woman , whose teachings, spiritual and social and prophetic, uplifted the people and prepared us to recognize the time of fulfillment, the time of renewal, the time when aspirations and hope would be fulfilled. This is a process by which the people can be connected with God, the Oneness.
Each of the native peoples of North America, like people everywhere, has a distinct way of expressing and celebrating this Covenant a few examples of which are the Sun Dance of the Plains people, the Mountain Spirit Dance of the Apache, the Beauty Way of the Navajo/Dine, Midewiwin for the Great Lakes Anishinabe, the White Deer Skin Dance of the Hupa in the West, the Green Corn Dance of the Eastern Woodlands, and more.
Why should anyone assume that the Covenant we indigenous peoples are celebrating is not with the One Source of attraction, the One True, Great Spirit, Creator, Grandfather, Breath Maker, Old Man, Earth Maker, Animator, God?

Buddhism and the Baha'i Faith . Buddhism is acknowledged in the Baha'i writings as one of the great world religions and its founder, the Buddha, is accorded a rank and station equal to that of all of the founders of the great world religions.
The relationship between the Baha'i Faith and Buddhism can be described in terms of a sharing of religious concepts and of encounters between individuals and communities. The student of the Baha'i Faith and Buddhism is at first struck by the scarcity of Baha'i expositions on Buddhist themes. In contrast to Christian and Muslim themes which are taken up and elaborated in detail by the founder himself, the Baha'i writings do not deal explicitly with the complex philosophical arguments which concern many Buddhists. Moreover, there are no surviving documents by the Bab or Baha'u'llah referring directly to Buddhism. There are, however, a number of statements in the Baha'i scriptures and authoritative Baha'i texts about Buddhism and the Buddha. `Abdu'l-Baha describes the Buddha as "the cause of the illumination of the world of humanity" (CoC1 43:15) and as the establisher of "a new religion" (CoC1 46:16). Shoghi Effendi clearly places the Buddha in the same rank and station as the founders of the other world religions (CoC1 54-56:19-20, 60:21, 63:22). A warning is sounded however that the Buddhist texts that have come down to us do not necessarily represent the exact words or teachings of the Buddha (CoC1 46:16, 48:17, 60:21, 64:22). This perception is also to be found in the Buddhist scriptures themselves, as there are several statements to the effect that the true

History
The Bahá'í Faith arose from Islam , similar to the way Christianity arose from Judaism . It has since grown to be a worldwide faith. Siyyid 'Ali-Muhammad (1819-1850) assumed the title Bab which means the Gate , and in 1844 announced His mission as heralding the arrival of "One greater than Himself" , Who would fulfill the prophetic expectations of all the great religions. His followers became known as Babis. 20,000 were martyred for their beliefs. His movement caused much religious ferment. This led to His execution in 1850 by order of the Shah's chief minister and at the instigation of Muslim clerics, who saw His movement as a threat to orthodox Islam. In 1863, one of the Bab's followers, Mirza Husayn-'Ali-i-Nuri (1817-1892), a prominent follower of the Bab to Whom the Bab had given several indications of His future station, confided to some of his followers and to His eldest son that He was the Manifestation predicted by the Bab. In 1866-MAR, He began proclaiming his station openly and publicly to the world at large. His assumed title, Baha'u'llah , by which He is generally known, was the title the Bab used to refer to Him. The last forty years of Baha'u'llah's life were spent in prison or in exile. The last 22 years were spent in or near Acre, then a prison city. The world headquarters of the Bahá'í Faith is located in the Holy Land today as a result.

Baha'u'llah, who declared his mission in 1863, taught that religion is progressively revealed by God, Who reveals His will to humanity through Divine Messengers (Abraham, Krishna, Moses, Buddha, Zoroaster, Jesus, Muhammad, and others). Baha'u'llah, the most recent Messenger of God, has brought a world-embracing message of divine guidance to help humanity achieve higher levels of excellence, to abolish prejudice, to establish true equality between the sexes, to eliminate the extremes of wealth and poverty, to ensure universal education, and to unify the hearts of men. The Baha'i Faith is established in 236 countries and territories throughout the world, making it the second-most widespread religion in the world. Bahai A relatively new world religion, the Baha'i faith attempts to unite all humanity in the belief that there is only one God.
It began when a young man announced that a new messenger of God would appear.
Unfortunately this announcement was made in Iran a very Muslim state,
and the young prophet Bab was executed along with thousands of his followers.
One of his followers, a member of a wealthy family was banished to Iraq and eventually imprisoned.
While imprisoned he realized that he was the messiah that his former leader was speaking of. While in prison Bahá'u'lláh which means Glory of God spread his inspirational message to his followers through extensive correspondence. After his death in 1892 his successor took the faith to other parts of the world as a missionary. The Baha'i faith has it's roots in Islam as they believe in one God but rejects some of the teachings of Muhammad such as the practice of polygamy and slavery.
The Bahais principals are summed up as:
  • The end of prejudice
  • Equality for women
  • Acceptance of the relativity and unity of spiritual truth
  • Just distribution of wealth
  • universal education
  • an individual's responsibility to seek the truth
  • the development of a world federation
  • Harmony of science and true religion.

    Overview:
The Baha'i Faith teaches beliefs about homosexuality that are quite similar to those of many conservative religions. They teach that: The only acceptable form of sexual expression is between a one man and one woman after marriage. Homosexual feelings and behavior are improper, and in opposition to God's plan for humanity. Homosexuality as a disability for the individual to overcome. Through prayer, medical treatment, counseling, and much personal effort, they believe that a homosexual can become " straight. " Unless gays or lesbians can convert their sexual orientation to bisexuality or heterosexuality, and enter a marriage with a person of the opposite gender, they are expected to remain celibate. The Baha'i faith has traditionally valued and accepted the findings of science. Their beliefs about to sexual orientation appear to be an exception to this policy. The major medical and mental health professional associations have issued statements declaring sexual orientation to be normal, natural, and unchangeable (or essentially so)

  • Name: The Baha'i Faith
  • Founder: Born Mizra Husayn-Ali, known by his followers as Baha'u'llah
  • Date of Birth/Death: November 12, 1817-May 29,1892
  • Birth Place: Tehran, Persia (present day Iran)
  • Year Founded: May 3, 1863. Baha'u'llah had his first revelation in 1852 while imprisoned in Persia; his announcement was not made until 1863.
  • History: In 1844, Sayyid Ali' Muhammad, a Shi'ite Muslim, deemed himself the "Bab" (Arabic for "door"). (Cole, 1998:26) In Shi'ite Islam his title means that he has special access to the Twelfth or Hidden Imam. The Bab was arrested and imprisoned for heresy which led to his execution in 1850. The early years for the Babis, as the Bab followers were called, were filled with conflicts with the Persian administration. Persians disagreed with the Bab's interpretation that he was the promised Qa'im who "would start a new era in religious history." (Melton, 1986, p. 19) His proclamation founded a new religion and many Shi'ite Muslims did not accept Bab's belief that he fulfilled the scriptures. This debate caused great persecution of Babis and those who later followed Baha'u'llah. (This turbulence is still present today in Iran.) Yet despite all the animosity, the Bab was not proclaiming himself the fulfillment of the ultimate prophecies. Before the Bab died he foretold the coming of someone much greater than he, known as "The Promised One of All Ages." (Melton, 1986:19)
