The Bahá'ís
In just over 100 years, the Bahá'í Faith has grown from an obscure movement in the Middle East to the second-most widespread of the independent world religions. Embracing people from more than 2,100 ethnic, racial and tribal groups, it is quite likely the most diverse organized body of people on the planet. Its unity challenges prevailing theories about human nature and the prospects for our common future.

    A Developmental Stage Approach
    William Garlington
Of the approximately 5 million members claimed world-wide by the
Baha'i authorities, nearly 2 million Baha'is are said to reside within the Republic of
India.(1*) This means that close to 40% of the international Baha'i
community is to be found within the borders of this South Asian nation, a
statistic that not only reflects the important position India currently
holds within the world-wide Baha'i community, but also suggests
that this country may have an important impact on the future direction the
religion might take. The study of the history and sociology of the movement
in the subcontinent is therefore an increasingly vital component of Baha'i
    studies as an academic field.
I discern five distinct stages of development during the nearly 150 years of Baha'i history in India: 1) the Babi, or pre-Baha'i period; 2) the initial stage of Baha'i community development (1872 -1910); 3) the first steps toward national unity (1910-1921); 4) the period of the Guardianship and the evolution

OK, guys, having been "outed" by Susan as someone who knows something about the early conversions of Africans to the Faith in Africa, I will have to say something. I have been holding myself back, because I don't have my notes right in front of me and will have to write everything from memory. So, I disclaim all responsibility beforehand. ;-) As to the beginnings of "mass conversions" in Uganda, I was honored to interview Mrs. Sammireh Banani (Mama-Jan) before her recent passing and get a clear picture from her of how things got started. It seems that after Enoch Olinga became a Baha'i, he was responsible for the first rapid conversions to the Faith and for the new technique of mass teaching. Olinga appears to have become a Baha'i in the ordinary way, by attending classes

THE BAHA'I FAITH A Portrait by Dr. Robert H. Stockman
Director of Research, Baha'i National Center, Wilmette, Illinois
The Baha'i Faith is an independent world religion now in the 150th year of its existence. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook it is the second most widely spread religion in the world, with five million members residing in 232 countries and dependent territories, and national spiritual assemblies (national Baha'i governing bodies) in 172. The Baha'i Faith began in Iran. Its history is intimately connected with the lives of its leading figures: Ali-Muhammad, titled the Bab Born in southern Iran in 1819, in 1844 he announced that he was the promised one or Mahdi expected by Muslims. He wrote scriptures in which he promulgated a new calendar, new religious laws and new social norms. Opposed by Iran's Muslim clergy and ultimately by its government, thousands of the Bab's followers were killed; in 1850 the Bab himself was put to death. Mirza Husayn-`Ali, titled Baha'u'llah

For more than a century, Baha'i communities around the globe have been working to break down barriers of prejudice between peoples and have collaborated with other like-minded groups to promote the model of a global society. At the heart of our belief is the conviction that humanity is a single people with a common destiny. In the words of Bah¡'u'll¡h , the Founder of our Faith, "The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens." Bah¡'u'll¡h taught that there is one God Who progressively reveals His will to humanity. Each of the great religions brought by the Messengers of God - Moses, Krishna, Buddha, Zoroaster, Jesus, Muhammad - represents a successive stage in the spiritual development of civilization. Bah¡'u'll¡h, the most recent Messenger in this line, has brought teachings that address the moral and spiritual challenges of the modern world. The Baha'i Faith upholds the unity of God, recognizes the unity of His Prophets, and inculcates the principles of the oneness and wholeness of the unification of mankind, asserts that it is gradually approaching, and claims that nothing short of the transmuting spirit of God, working through His Mouthpiece in this day, can ultimately succeed in bringing it about.
