    Islam and the Baha'i Faith
The Baha'i Faith proclaims an underlying oneness that binds all major world religions. All are connected through the unity of their originating source, and the similarities in their core teachings. The different relationships between the Baha'i Faith and many of these religions are explored at various web sites. The relationship between Islam and the Baha'i Faith has its own particulars. It is affected by the proximity between the two Faiths in both time and geography. This site was established with the hope of promoting a better understanding of the relationship between the Baha'i Faith and Islam.
Since its inception in the mid eighteen hundreds, the Baha'i Faith has been regarded by many, in the region where it started, with mistrust and suspicion. Numerous accusations have been made concerning its origins and its goals and aims. At the very least, it has been belittled as a misguided and insignificant sect of Islam.
The pages on this site present a humble attempt at addressing these issues.

    49. The Conversion Of Religious Minorities To The Bahá'í Faith In Iran
Some observations by Susan Stiles Maneck.

    Introduction
Topics Library Graphics Index ... Site Map The Conversion of Religious Minorities
to the Bahá'í Faith in Iran Some Preliminary Observations Susan Stiles Maneck Abstract
In the period between 1877-1921 significant numbers of non-Muslims converted to the Bahá'í Faith in Iran. This was an essential development for the emergence of the Bahá'í Faith as an independent religion possessing a distinct identity apart from Islam. These conversions were largely confined to the Zoroastrian and Jewish communities and did not involve Iran's largest religious minority, the Christians. This study attempts to address some of the factors that were involved in this conversion process. These will include the manner in which Bahá'ís made the transition from Islamic particularism to a universalism that would attract non-Muslims, as well as the manner in which actual conversions took place and the factors surrounding them. Major emphasis will be placed upon examining what factors may have inclined certain minorities rather than others to convert. T he Jewish conversion movement began in Hamadan around 1877, and by 1884, according to the historian of Persian Jewry Habib Levy, involved some one hundred and fifty of the eight-hundred Jewish households there (

    51. Baha'i View Of Alcoholics Anonymous
Letters from the Universal House of Justice say that the practice of confession in the 5th Step of Alcoholics Anonymous is acceptable to followers of the Baha'i faith.
    http://www.bahai-library.com/uhj/alcoholics.anonymous.html
[Note: this letter was transmitted via email, without a complete header. It appears (from personal greetings which have been deleted) that it might have been compiled by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Alaska on behalf of the Universal House of Justice. A copy of the complete text would be appreciated. -J.W.] 9 November 1987 Dear Baha'i Friend, In response to your letter of 28 July 1987, we have been asked by the Universal House of Justice to quote below for your benefit from letters written on its behalf concerning Alcoholics Anonymous. The malign effects of the widespread use of alcoholic beverages upon almost every society in the world cannot but confirm every Baha'i in the wisdom of Baha'u'llah in banning its use, thereby shielding faithful believers from a legion of difficulties . . . The Baha'i community should feel free to call upon such agencies as Alcoholics Anonymous for assistance and upon public agencies who work with the problem, but must realize that the greatest healing of this social and individual disease is God's Cause which in its fulness will eliminate the causes of alcoholism . . .
(From letter to a National Assembly dated 8 August 1979) The Universal House of Justice . . . has instructed us to say that there is no objection to Baha'is being members of Alcoholics Anonymous, which is an association that does a great deal of good in assisting alcoholics to overcome their lamentable condition. The sharing of experiences which the members undertake does not conflict with the Baha'i prohibition on the confession of sins; it is more in the nature of the therapeutic relationship between a patient and a psychiatrist.

    http://www.northill.demon.co.uk/bahai/
    An Introduction to
    THE BAHA'I FAITH
The Baha'i Faith is a worldwide religion based on the teachings of Baha'u'llah (1817-1892). He stated that the time had come for the people of the world to put aside their differences and to unite on the basis of the teachings that he had brought. In the brief course of its 150-year history, the Baha'i Faith has transformed itself from an obscure Middle Eastern sect into a fast-growing religion that has established itself in every country of the world and is rapidly emerging out of obscurity to take its place alongside older more established world religions. The religion has grown and developed greatly in terms of its numerical strength, geographical spread, and community organisation. The largest Baha'i communities are now in South Asia, Africa, Latin America, and (relative to the size of the population) in some of the islands of the Pacific. In these parts of the world, some villages and areas are more or less completely Baha'i. Here the Baha'is have initiated educational, agricultural and community development projects. The latest available official Baha'i statistics (1994) state that there are between 5 and 6 million Baha'is in the world; that Baha'is live in over 110,000 localities; that there are over 17,000 places where there are organized Baha'i communities with elected local councils (Local Spiritual Assemblies); and 172 national elected bodies (National Spiritual Assemblies). We desire but the good of the world and happiness of the nations.... That all nations should become one in faith and all men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and differences of race be annulled... Yet so it shall be; these fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the "Most Great Peace" shall come.... These strifes and this bloodshed and discord must cease, and all men be as one kindred and one family.... Let not a man glory in this, that he loves his country; let him rather glory in this, that he loves his kind.... (words spoken by Baha'u'llah to Prof. E.G. Browne of Cambridge University in 1890)
