Sports UPDATED: 07:24, May 16, 2005 China achieve badminton team grand slam after Sudirman Cup win It is the first time in badminton history that a country could hold three world team titles in hand when China retained the Sudirman Cup on home soil following their victories in the Thomas and Uber Cup. "The Chinese team had their names written in history,"said Chinese head coach Li Yongbo on Sunday, when hosts lifted the Sudirman Cup for the fifth time. "I am so proud of my players who tried their best throughout the tournament but we have to start anew for the 2008 Olympic Games , which will be the ultimate goal of our team," he said. "Before that, I think we will have a quick celebration," he added.

Competitive Sports In March 1959, Rong Guotuan, a table-tennis player, won the first world title in the sports history of China at the 25th World Table Tennis Championships held in Germany. From then to the end of 2001, Chinese athletes have altogether won 1,498 world championships and broken 1,045 world records; among them, 1,468 world championships were won and 877 world records were broken by Chinese athletes during the period between 1978 and 2001. Before the founding of the PRC in 1949, Chinese athletes had participated in the Olympic Games three times, but had failed to win any medals. However, after 1949, the Chinese government sent delegations to participate in five summer Olympics and six winter Olympics, winning a total of 52 gold medals. At the Los Angeles, Barcelona and Atlanta Olympic Games, China ranked No. 4 in the number of gold medals and reaped large numbers of other medals. China has also ranked No. 1 five times in a row in both the total number of gold medals and the total tally of medals from the 9th to the 13th Asian Games. The year 2001 was a bumper harvest year for China in competitive sports. Table tennis and badminton remained China’s strongest sports events. The Chinese team bagged all the seven world titles in the World Table Tennis Championships. The Chinese badminton team won the Sudirman Cup once again. The performance of Chinese winter sports athletes proved once again that their past achievements were not transient. Chess player Zhu Chen became the second Chinese world champion after Xie Jun. In the Ninth National Games at the end of the year, 24 contestants broke seven world records 35 times, six contestants and one team chalked up six new Asian records seven times, 28 contestants broke nine Asian records 41 times, and 32 contestants and four teams chalked up 37 new national records 52 times.

Gatorade and Sports Drinks
Author: National Petroleum News
Thursday 1 August 2002
In 1965, the University of Florida Gators football team was experiencing severe fatigue caused by the heat of the Florida swamp and the intense physical strain of playing the sport. Upon conducting several tests, doctors and scientists discovered that the team's performance was suffering because team members were not properly hydrated. In fact, most of the players failed to use the restroom even once during an entire football game. This research led to the development of a carbohydrate-electrolyte infused drink called Gatorade. The Gator's new sports drink proved invaluable. Game after game, the Gators outplayed their opponents, especially during the second half. Before long, coaches on opposing teams were asking about the beverage. And the rest is history.

The Bottom Line Puckmugger's Sports Write-Off.. Sports nuts will have a lot of fun doing this!
1. What are your favorite sports to watch on television?
Being from Canada I've always been a hockey nut, but I also love watching NFL football. I am a huge Maple Leafs fan and a huge Denver Bronco fan.
2. How often do you watch sports on television?
Watching sports consumes much of my time actually. I am a very competitive person and I am involved in fantasy teams and football pools. It's part of my life that I enjoy completely. I am so thankful for sports.
3. What are your favorite sports to watch live? Hockey, football, tennis, baseball 4. How many live sporting events do you typically attend annually? I have season tickets to see the Chiefs play but I hate the Chiefs, but I love to go and boo them! I love it when the Broncos come to town. I go to as many pro-hockey games as I can, usually in Phoenix, Toronto, Detroit or St. Louis. I usually go to about 10 KC Royals games per summer. 5. What organized team sports have you ever participated in previously?

Black Cocks coming to a town near you
28 June 2005
Nigel Skelt may have offended his 80-year-old mother, but the Badminton New Zealand (BNZ) chairman is pumping to have the Black Cocks monicker officially adopted for the national team.
After BNZ gauged public reaction to arguably the most phallic name ever proposed for a representative New Zealand sports team earlier this month, Skelt told NZPA today he was confident the Black Cocks tag would be confirmed at an BNZ board meeting late next month. Besides his mother, and some other family members, Skeltz said 95 percent of public feedback through their website to the name had been positive. More importantly the naming stunt, which coincided with New Zealand's 3-0 series whipping of Australia in the Whyte Trophy, has attracted overtures from sponsors which had surpassed BNZ's expectations. "While the initial name release was a gimmick to give us some extended coverage (of the Whyte Trophy), there has been some positive feedback.
