Badminton may not have the sizzle and sex appeal of some North American sports, but from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur, it is the game of champions.
The image of badminton as a quiet court sport belies the agility, dexterity, concentration and body strength required for competition play. In fact, the University of Ottawa's star badminton men's player this year suffered a knee injury serious enough to take him off the court for most of the season, says veteran coach Dominic Soong, an ex-world badminton champion.
The loss of former gold medallist Jeff Walak in this year's play knocked the University of Ottawa's badminton team out of the top ranks of the eastern university division. The team was locked into fifth place nationally and out of play-off contention altogether. It was bad luck for ateam that has taken bronze, silver or gold in national play for the last eight years.
Acutely aware of the sport's hidden demands, Soong ensures a rigorous training program for the team, comprised of 12 men and 12 women. Weight training, floor and fast footwork exercises aim to strengthen forearm muscles and improve speed, he says.

The net is 5 feet high, stretched tightly between two posts placed on the doubles side line. The shuttlecock (or bird or, simply, shuttle) has a base 25 to 28 millimeters in diameter, rounded on the bottom. It may have 16 feathers, arranged in a circle, or a skirt made of simulated feathers. In either case, the length must be between 62 and 70 millimeters, and the total weight must be 4.74 to 5.50 grams. The maximum racket size is 680 milleters long and 230 millimeters at its widest point. The stringed area must not be larger than 280 millimeters in length and 220 millimeters in width. Top of page
Progress of Play
Players begin by tossing a racket to decide which of them serves first. The server stands anywhere in his or her own right-hand service court and serves diagonally across into the opponent's right-hand service court; the serve must go beyond the short service line. The players then continue hitting the bird back and forth until one of them makes a fault. If it is the server's fault, no point is scored, but the other player wins the right to serve. Only the server can score. A player serves from the right-hand service court when the number of points is even, and from the left-hand court when there is an odd number of points. Game is usually 15 points in men's tournament play, 11 in women's. In men's play, if the score is tied at 13, the first player to reach that number has the option of "setting" the game at 5 points; that is, he declares that the first player to score 5 points (for a total of 18) will be the winner. At 14-all, the first player to reach 14 can "set" the game at 3 points. If he elects not to set the game, game remains at 15 points.

HU Badminton Team
By Sean Jackman Published: Friday, February 20, 2004
While most of you enjoyed the three-day weekend, the Howard University Badminton team rounded up yet another tournament with a smashing victory.
The team, consisting of Daniel Betita, Devan Martin, Arthur Alexander, Samira Guntalinka, Nadira Guntalinka, Amy Nguy, Shackerah Cupidon, Pavel Byles, Robert Moses, Tamara de Souza, Miriam Ahmed, Jonathan Durant, Grace-Ann Duncan, Angela Gaither and Adetunji Arojojoye came up against University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore, Albright, Princeton and other universities in an eastern seaboard clash.
The success at the Northeast Regional Championships was almost overwhelming. In the men's singles competitions, Samira Guntalinka took home the main gold while Alexander won gold in the men's consolation round. Cupidon took the women's singles title before teaming up with Nguy to snag women's doubles gold.
Samira Guntalinka, sided with brother Nadira, walked away comfortably with the men's doubles and then got his third gold medal of the tournament with Nguy in the mixed doubles to wrap up an evening that would see HU gain gold in every single category but women's consolation. The final points total underlined the superiority of the team: Howard with 100 points, with the other teams ranging from 20 to 40 points.
