Collier: Olympic sports to erase
Sunday, July 17, 2005 By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
You may have noted that baseball and softball have gotten themselves thrown out of the Olympics beginning in 2012, which is good, but the International Olympic Committee, with its customary smug restraint, stopped at only two ejections. Too bad. Here are five more "sports" that are way more erasable and should have gotten a similar defenestration: water polo, shooting, synchronized swimming, fencing and badminton. Maybe if the Olympics started lopping off seven sports at a time, we could eventually get to a place where the Olympics are close enough to killing themselves to spark a reasonable discussion about whether that would be a bad thing. Though nothing formal was forthcoming in the way of reasoning from the IOC on the baseball-softball killing, committee members said publicly that baseball in particular had a credibility problem due to steroid use. That's very close to comical.

Never before in the Olympic Games history has a Greek athlete took part in the volleyball, in handball and in other sports less popular in Greece, such as baseball, softball, hockey and badminton. In August 2004 in Athens, Greek athletes will compete in sports most of the Greeks are not familiar with, as well as in sports, like volley ball and handball, Greek athletes are proud of great distinctions. But there are also sports where Greece has never been represented at the Olympics. VOLLEYBALL
The President of Greece's Volley Ball Federation (EOPE) and Hellenic Olympic Committee's (HOC) treasurer Thanassis Beligratis was very clear about the participation of national volleyball teams of men and women in the Athens Olympic Games. "We won't participate in the Games just to parade", he said. "The program of our national
volleyball teams' preparation for the 2004 was set up when our country won the Olympic Games organization. We have been working on that and I hope that our teams will manage to star both in the volleyball and in the beach volleyball". Greece's national men's team won a bronze medal at a European championship, while they took the sixth place, the best they had ever achieved, at the World Championship which took place in Athens in 1994. In the beach volleyball, Greece can be proud of a gold medal at a European championship. It is worth mentioning that volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo, while beach volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games program in 1996 in Atlanta. Greece has already a participation in two Games.

Badminton probably originated in India as a grownup's version of a very old children's game known in England as battledore and shuttlecock, the battle dore being a paddle and the shuttlecock a small feathered cork, now usually called a "bird".
This sport have been played for centuries by children in India, Siam, and Japan, this was cooperative a game in which the players worked together to keep the "bird" in the air for as long as possible.
A net was added and the game had become a competitive sport called "poona" by the 1860s, when British Army officers were playing it in India. Some of them brought equipment back to England and introduced the new sport there during the early 1870s.
It was played at a lawn party held by Duke of Beaufort at his country place, Badminton, in 1873, and it became known as "the Badminton game" among various quests who introduced it to other friends.
The Bath Badminton Club, organized in 1877, developed the first written rules, which have remained essentially the same. In 1893, the Badminton Association of England was founded as the first national governing body and the first All-England championship was held in 1899.
The Badminton Club of New York was organized in 1878, but it was primarily a social club. The Badminton Health Club of Boston, founded in 1908, devoted more time to the sport and grew to mare than 300 members by 1925. But Badminton did not become genuinely popular in the U.S. until the 1930s.

Opinion UPDATED: 14:58, May 09, 2005 IBF in mixed feelings ahead of IOC evaluation The International Badminton Federation may have a small relief thanks to badminton's good performance in the Athens Games but it still worries its fate in the Olympics. Badminton faces two crucial moments this year to decide its Olympic future as the IOC will vote in July to choose the 2012 Olympic program and meet again in October to see whether badminton competition can stay unchanged in the Olympic Games. "The IOC evaluation for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games events has yet to finish. But I can say badminton left a good impression on the IOC and I expect good result in July evaluation," said newly elected IBF president Kang Young Joong from South Korea on Sunday. According to IBF's TV audience research, the mixed doubles final between China and Britain on August 19, 2004, attracted a combined viewing audience of 80 million, including over five million in Britain.

Badminton is a sport that can be played by men and women of all skill levels and all ages. But to compete at the highest levels successfully, athletes must develop special skills such as technique, stamina, strength, and flexibility. The sport has spread around the world and is especially popular in Asia where spectators can exceed 15,000 in important contests. In Greece, Badminton is becoming increasingly popular. In 1995, when it was formally recognised by the General Secretariat of Sport, there were only 90 officially registered players. Today, there are over 3,500. During the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, Badminton competition attracted a lot of attention. Countries with long tradition in the sport sent their best athletes, after a twelve-month selection process. Description
See the Olympic sports animations   Badminton is played between two or four athletes. Unique to this Olympic sport is the mixed doubles event, in which a man and a woman athlete compete on the same pair.
