Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles).
The game of badminton is superficially similar to that of (A game played with rackets by two or four players who hit a ball back and forth over a net that divides the court) tennis . Players at opposite ends of the court aim to hit a (Badminton equipment consisting of a ball of cork or rubber with a crown of feathers) shuttlecock over the net so that it lands inside the marked boundaries of the court, and aim to prevent their opponents from doing the same. Unlike a (Ball about the size of a fist used in playing tennis) tennis ball , the shuttlecock flies with a lot of (The phenomenon of resistance to motion through a fluid) drag , and will not bounce significantly. The shuttlecock is always volleyed, and a point ends as soon as it touches the ground. Badminton racquets have long handles, to make it easier to impart a great deal of (The product of a body's mass and its velocity) momentum to overcome the drag. The racquets are also much lighter than tennis racquets, because the shuttlecock is light.

Asia Dominates the Sport
Though England birthed the sport of badminton, it has been Asia that adopted it as its own. China and Indonesia are the two dominant nations in international badminton competition. Matches in these nations draw crowds of more than 15,000. These two countries together have won an astonishing 70 percent of all IBF events. Asian countries have claimed all 23 Thomas Cups that have been awarded. In Uber Cup competition, Asian nations have won the last 15 titles.

Winning Start for Argentina
DUESSELDORF, Germany, May 17French Open finalists Gaston Gaudio and Guillermo Coria gave title favorites Argentina a commanding start to the World Team Cup with a 2-1 victory over France on Monday, Reuters reported.
Roland Garros champion Gaudio overcame Arnaud Clement 6-4, 4-6 while Coria was even more impressive in his brisk 6-1 6-4 workout against Michael Llodra.
With just a week to go before Gaudio begins the defense of his French crown, the Argentine showed his class on the surface by running Clement ragged.
French number one Sebastien Grosjean was forced to withdraw from the match with a knee injury and his replacement never looked like he could wrest control from Gaudio.
The French pair then joined forces and prevented an Argentine rout with a 6-1 6-4 victory over Guillermo Canas and Juan Ignacio Chela.
Chile, looking to become the first nation to win the competition three years running, lead the group on a better games won/lost difference after beating wildcard the Czech
Republic 2-1 on the opening day of the tournament.

FAQs
Badminton is a game in which either individuals (in singles) or pairs (doubles play) of players use lightweight rackets to hit a nylon or feather shuttlecock (also called a bird or shuttle) across a net. Points are scored by winning rallies (points may only be scored when a player had the serve). While it sounds cute and fun, it is also the fastest racket sport in the world, and fierce rivalries have been forged on the badminton court.
In the late 1800s, badminton was introduced in England by British officials who had learned the game (called Poona) in India. The game actually dates back to ancient Greece and China as well, and was called battledore and shuttlecock. The first standardized rules for what we call badminton were outlined in 1895 in England; the United States Badminton Association was founded in 1936.

History
Badminton probably originated in India as a grownup's version of a very old children's game known in England as battledore and shuttlecock, the battledore being a paddle and the shuttlecock a small feathered cork, now usually balled a "bird." Played for centuries by children in India, Siam, and Japan, this was a cooperative game in which the players worked together to keep the "bird" in the air for as long as possible. A net was added and the game had become a competitive sport called "poona" by the 1860s, when British Army officers were playing it in India. Some of them brought equipment back to England and introduced the new sport there during the early 1870s. It was played at a lawn party held by Duke of Beaufort at his country place, Badminton, in 1873, and it became known as "the Badminton game" among various guests who introduced it to other friends. The Bath Badminton Club, organized in 1877, developed the first written rules, which have remained essentially the same. In 1893, the Badminton Association of England was founded as the first national governing body and the first All-England championship was held in 1899.

Olympic Medalists: Badminton
History
Badminton was a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympics and became a medal event in 1992. Originally, finalists were determined through a round-robin tournament, followed by a single-elimination tournament for the top finishers, who were seeded based on their round robin records. The semifinal losers were awarded joint bronze medals. Since 1996, the whole tournament has been single elimination. The top eight ranked players are seeded and the other eight are placed in a blind draw. The losers in the semifinal round now play for the bronze medal. The mixed doubles championship was added in 1996. Top of page

adminton has a surprisingly long history given its relatively recent introduction onto the Olympic scene. Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India and China. Badminton took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International Badminton Federation. Founded in 1934 with nine members - Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales, membership of the International Badminton Federation has risen steadily. There was a notable increase in new members after badminton's Olympic debut at Barcelona. Development in the sport continues to grow and the current 142 members is expected to increase further.

Brief Record of Malaysia's Participation in Past Olympic Games since 1956 Prior to the formation of the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council in 1953 and its subsequent recognition by the IOC in 1954, some Malayans may have participated in the Olympic Games, representing their countries of origin, such as China and India. After receiving the recognition of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1954, the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council, as it was then known, sent a contingent of 33 athletes from 6 sports to participate in the Olympic Games in 1956 in Melbourne. Since then the Olympic Council of Malaysia, as it is known since 1964, has been participating in all the Olympic Games, except the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
The Olympic Contingent of the Federation of Malaya to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games comprised six athletes, two swimmers, 18 Hockey players, three Weightlifters and four shooters. There was only one female athlete in the Contingent, Ms. Annie Choong, who participated in Athletics. Amongst the Olympians were Koh Eng Tong, the 1950 British Empire Weightlifting gold medallist in the Featherweight Division and Tan Kim Bee, the silver medallist in the Light Heavyweight Division. The Hockey team finished 9th out of 12 teams. The Chef de Mission was Mr. H.M. De Souza (Hockey) and the Flag Bearer was Tan Eng Bee (Weightlifting)
