Badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 , which makes it illegal to kill, injure or take badgers or to interfere with a badger sett. Interference with a sett includes blocking tunnels or damaging the sett in any way. Please note the ammendments to the above legislation as a result of the Hunting Act 2004. There is, however, provision within the legislation to allow action to be taken under a licence from the Defra if the problem cannot be resolved by alternative means.

Badger
Taxidea taxus Description - This stout, shaggy animal is the largest of the weasel family with only the wolverine exceeding it's size . Its coat is a grizzled grey to brown with a white stripe from upturned snout to shoulder. The tail is short, bushy and yellowish; the cheeks white with dark patches; the ears small and the feet dark with large foreclaws. The male is larger than the female weighing usually 7-25 pounds. Distribution - The badger prefers open plains, farmlands and the edges of woods. They range throughout southeast British Columbia and a studfy in 1990 concluded that only 300-1000 badgers likely occurred. Biology - 2-5 blind young are born in March or April. They feed on squirrels, pocket gophers, rats and mice which they usually capture by digging out their burrows. They also eat birds, invertebrates, and carrion and are fond of rattlesnake; they are apparently unharmed by the venom unless the snake strikes its nose. A very ferocious animal, the badger has few enemies. Its hair is used to make the best quality paintbrushes, and the coarse bristles were formerly used in shaving brushes. Forest succession and encroachment into grasslands is reducing the habitat of the badger, an animal vital in controlling rodent populations.

CARING FOR BADGERS
A step forward - caring for badgers in veterinary practice, an article by Tamsin Joiner Morgan, BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), VN
HABITAT
The Eurasian badger (Meles meles) is the largest and most numerous of Britain's carnivores with a population of about 250,000 (Hart-Davis, 2002). Whilst these mustelids are generally found in the more rural areas of this country, they are very adaptable to suburban areas and therefore populations are seen in most large cities. Badger territories can vary immensely ranging from 30ha to 300ha, the group and territory sizes being largely determined by the quality and distribution of food respectively (Mullineaux, 2003). As a result of this, the death rate can be high in youngsters and therefore it is not common for badgers to reach more than ten years of age in the wild. Badgers live in setts which comprise of a network of underground tunnels and chambers, with up to ten or more entrances. Whilst each badger social group usually has one main sett within its territory, there may also be a variety of additional setts. In these cases, there will be well marked paths between the different sett and main feeding areas and latrines. The badger setts are normally built on well drained soil and have very large entrances of between 30-60cm in diameter (which enables them to be differentiated from those dwellings of foxes and rabbits).

We provide some of the best badger gates available, to consultancies, developers and landowners all over the UK, and try to keep sufficient stocks to cope with the inevitable last-minute orders during the badger sett exclusion licensing season. However many badger gates you require, whether it is just one badger gate for a stock-proof or rabbit-proof fence, or to keep your dogs from escaping through holes made by badgers in your fence, or 20 badger gates for a large badger sett exclusion, we aim to supply the best badger gates available, at short notice, and at a reasonable price. Please e-mail us with your requirements or for further details.
Made from oak, our standard wooden badger gates exceed the specifications suggested by Defra, and provide a reliable means of allowing badgers to pass through fences, while effectively blocking the passage of rabbits, deer, and other unwanted wildlife.
This avoids the problem of badgers digging under fences and allowing other wildlife or pets through, as badgers will always try to continue to use their paths, even when they are blocked.

... Top of page We provide the following quote from the fourth report of the Independent Scientific Group (ISG), on the subject of the pressure being put on the UK Government to expand the culling of badgers.
"9.7 Despite the fact that this scientific information is not yet available, pressure has been put on government and on the ISG from the outset of our work to sanction the culling of badgers outside trial areas, based on the preconceived view that localised badger culling had previously contributed significantly to the control of the disease. This view is not, however, supported by evidence or indeed by the logic of the Krebs report, which recommended initiating a trial specifically because the value of badger culling in controlling cattle TB was unknown. The ISG response to proposals for culling outside trial areas was embodied in our letter to Ministers (Second ISG Report16, Appendix E) and reasserted clearly that the scientific evidence needed to consider any such approach was being investigated by the ongoing RBCT and it was not appropriate to consider the culling of badgers outside trial areas until that study had been completed. Subsequently the results and analysis presented to the Minister in October 2003, and strengthened by further analysis in April 2004, have shown that reactive, localised culling, as conducted in the trial is at best ineffective and more likely counterproductive (see detailed discussion in Chapter 3).

BADGER W ith their flattened, oval shape, abundant grizzled brownish fur, distinctive white stripe on the forehead (sometimes continuing down the back) and powerful build, badgers are easily identified. They are the "bulldozer" of the weasel family. Large front claws suggest a capable burrower. The face is black with pale marks, the feet are black and the belly is pale. Total length is 28 – 32 inches, the short tail only 4 – 6 inches long. Weights range from 11 to 22 pounds. B B adgers eat mostly burrowing rodents, such as ground squirrels and pocket gophers, which they dig up during evening or early morning. They also eat nestling birds and rabbits, as well as insects. When frozen ground protects burrowing rodents from attack, badgers turn to mice. In especially cold weather they may simply retreat to their burrow to sleep. B adgers mate in late summer. Embryo implantation is delayed until about February. One to four young are born in early spring. They grow quickly and leave their mothers during their first autumn. They first breed first as yearlings. B adgers are well protected from most predators by a thick hide and generally unpleasant disposition. Some are killed for fur, but habitat loss and vehicular accidents probably are greater causes of mortality.

The Group monitors badger activity at a number of setts in the County and liaises with Councils on any proposals which may have an impact on badgers and their habitat. The Group continues both the research into these curious animals of the dark and the education of local people, especially children, of the need to protect badgers, their setts and foraging grounds, so that future generations will have the joy of watching and learning about our British wildlife heritage.

INTRODUCTION
engaging in a fight, badgers often dig themselves into a hole for defense. Man and packs of dogs are the chief predators of badgers in Indiana, but coyotes may take a few young each spring.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
This husky member of the weasel family is specialized for digging. Built close to the ground, they weigh up to 40 pounds and can reach 35 inches in length, including the tail. Their overall color is silver-gray, but they have a distinctive, narrow, white stripe running from the nose over the top of the head. Cheeks are white with a black patch in front of short, erect ears. The fur is short, coarse and not of much value. Badger hair bristles, once used in shaving brushes, have now been replaced by man-made fibers. FAMILY LIFE
Badgers mate in the fall, but the young do not start developing within the mother's body until February. During winter, badgers spend long periods underground. In early spring, a litter of two to five young are born in a grass-lined burrow. The young are weaned when they are half-grown. At this time, they begin to venture outside the underground home on hunting trips. In the fall, after the young have learned to hunt for themselves, the family separates and the animals become rather solitary. Their life expectancy in the wild is unknown, but they have lived 13 years in captivity.

Download for free here Badger Badgers use a complex system of underground tunnels leading to multiple entrance holes, the number of which has no bearing on how many animals actually use the sett. If you find a badger sett, count the number of entrance holes that are well used. You can tell this if they have freshly dug earth leading from the inside of the hole to the outside. Also, see if you can find piles of bedding which have been left out by the badgers to dry. Rabbit A rabbit's home is similar to a badger's, with a multiple entrance hole system called a warren. However some rabbits live on the surface, hiding in thick bramble in areas where there is little risk of predation. Fox Foxes make their dens almost anywhere. In urban areas they turn up in the most unlikely places, such as underneath portable dwellings or discarded builders' rubble. The traditional fox den is usually a solitary entrance hole that may originally have been made by a badger. A good way to tell if a fox is at home is to smell the air around the entrance hole. The harsh musty smell of a fox is often overpowering. It's not unusual for foxes to share a badger's sett, so don't be surprised if you see both species emerging from the same hole.
