Ratel or Honey Badger
Ratel or Honey Badger: Mellivora capensis Characteristics Weight and Height
males/females: wt 17.6-32 lb (8-14.5 kg), ht 9-11 in (23-28 cm), hbl 26-30 in (65-75 cm) Tail
Relatively short, 7 to 9 in (18-22 cm) long. Color
Black with gray or white areas, such as on tail and crown. General Locations
The badger can be found in most regions south of the Sahara, except for deserts and lowland rainforest. The ratel badger can be found in most of West Africa, south of Morocco. Habitat
The ratel badger can live in almost any biome, wet or dry and elevations up to 1 mi (1700 m) which are generally the rainforest regions. The ratel badger will eat anything from insects (such as bees, ants and termites) to mammals to fruits and berries. The ratel can also easily dig for food especially the prey which is too difficult for most non-diggers to reach. Activity The ratel badger is considered diurnal and nocturnal and can easily adapt to the region in which it lives. The ratel can become diurnal or nocturnal depending on which is more efficient. In rural areas, for example, the ratel will sleep during the day and then hunt for food all night. Social Systems Currently there have not been any true field-studies completed on the ratel badger. However, ratels are generally seen alone and occasionally in duos or trios. Evidence shows that ratels probably form monogamous pairs for mating.

Parliamentary Publications and Archives Site Map Bills Hansard Directories Frequently Asked Questions Judicial Work Previous Section Back to Table of Contents Lords Hansard Home Page The Countess of Mar: I do not agree with the noble Lord. I asked for culling to be done under the control of the Defra wildlife unit. We want a controlled cull, not a mass kill. Does the Minister understand that culling is not mass slaughter? Lord Whitty: The only way in which the Government, or the Government and farmers together, can engage in a controlled, focused, targeted cull is if it is based on evidence. Many contributions this afternoon have been to deny us the time to complete the Krebs trial. Indeed, there has been a certain amount of rubbishing of the Krebs trial. Not completing the trial would deny us the evidence on which to base a focused, strategic approach to controlling the badger population and the threat to cattle from TB and badgers. Baroness Byford: The main point made this afternoon is about the concern that the trials are flawed. That is the basis on which noble Lords would like movement. Why wait another 18 months or more when the trials are already flawed? Unless things alter rapidly, I do not see how the trials will not still be flawed at the end of 2007. That is where the disagreement in the Committee arises.

20. Wildlife Protection
The Act did improve protection for the most important wildlife habitats badgers (Meles meles) badger baiting with dogs has been illegal since the last

Wildlife Protection
A great many international conventions, European directives and national laws attempt to protect species of animals and plants, but the degree of protection varies considerably. For instance, laboratory animals are protected from being kept in unsuitable conditions, but not from cruel experiments. On the other hand, it can be illegal to keep certain animals (otters or badgers for example), even if they are dead. Some of the most important of the many Acts of Parliament which refer to animals are: Protection of Animals Act 1911 Protects captive animals from various forms of abuse, and protects wild animals temporarily held in captivity. The RSPCA often uses the Act to prosecute people guilty of cruelty. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, 1975) This convention makes unregulated trade in certain species unlawful, whether the animals are alive or dead. Tigers, whales, rhinos and pandas are among the animals protected. Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 Provides the strongest protection of any British legislation. Species listed in Schedule 5 of the Act are protected from disturbance, injury, intentional destruction or sale. Other provisions outlaw certain methods of taking or killing listed species. This Act amended and strengthened earlier legislation, and is brought up to date regularly to ensure the most endangered animals are on the schedule.
