Back to school for Summer
No stranger to challenges, she is now helping others as a teacher
June 13, 2005 Hurrying through Charlestown High School, hunched under a full backpack, Lauralee Summer looks almost young enough to pass for a student. Summer is the ''homeless to Harvard" girl whose story of drifting with her mother, finding her niche in an alternative program at Quincy High School and as the school's only female wrestler, then going to Harvard attracted national attention. She wrote the 2003 memoir ''Learning Joy From Dogs Without Collars." But here, in this brick behemoth of an urban high school where almost three-quarters of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, Summer is one of 16 first-year teachers. She's another newcomer trying to establish herself in a difficult profession. She teaches remedial English, English as a second language, and freshman writing. She's been buffeted by the unruly behavior that plagues many novice teachers, but things have improved enough that she hasn't gone home and cried since winter. In a school where headmaster Michael Fung guarantees new teachers a job for two years before deciding whether to retain them, Summer, 28, will teach seniors next year and, she hopes, help start a wrestling team. Her idealism bruised but intact, she dreams of making a difference to students, as Charles MacLaughlin, her mentor at Quincy High, did for her. ''It gets better toward the end of the year. You know the kids so well that you feel more relaxed. You know the ways they're going to test you," Summer says. ''You still have to be constantly aware, but it's more like being with a family, a big family that you always have to watch out for."

Teachers Back to School to Train
China's ten million primary and middle school teachers will get a look at the classroom from the other side of the desk when they became students in a bid to improve teaching quality.
The move is part of a provision that requires teachers to go on training programs every five years to update their skills, according to today's China Daily
A total of ten million teachers will all receive professional training within the next five years, said Ma Li, director of the Department for Teacher Training and Education under the Ministry of Education. The participants will attend part-time classes to learn how to improve their teaching methods in such subjects as Chinese, English, mathematics, physics and biology. In addition, they will also learn about psychology so they can understand their students better, said Ma. Harsh treatment and physical punishment have been met out by some teachers with poor training and have led to tragedies, such as students committing suicide over the past few years.

Science teachers go back to school
Visits to industrial sites and residential study courses at university are on the curriculum for school science teachers in two new programmes designed to enhance their teaching. Science teachers in primary and secondary schools are set to benefit from two programmes being developed at the University of York to enhance science education. The programme has been made possible by a grant from Gatsby Technical Education Projects. Primary school teachers will work with industrial partners to arrange visits by school children to industrial sites. Topics which might be taught with industrial themes include water usage in industry and the properties and uses of plastics. Visits to industrial sites will help the children to understand the application of scientific principles. The project will benefit both teachers and pupils by helping them understand the role of science in industry. The secondary school Science Enhancement Programme will draw upon the links which have been established at the University between the Science Education Group and the departments of Physics, Chemistry and Educational Studies. Teachers on the programme will attend a three week residential study course. The focus will be upon updating teachers' knowledge of their subject, with contributions from external speakers from industry, as well as updating their knowledge of the latest developments in the teaching of science.

Displaced NY students back in class
NEW YORK (AP) Thousands of youngsters whose schools near the World Trade Center have been closed since the terrorist attacks returned to class Thursday in other neighborhoods, with many comforted that some things are getting back to normal. "I'm so excited to be coming back," said first-grader Caitelin McCoy, who was relocated from Public School 89 in Battery Park City to PS 3 in Greenwich Village. "Now I have a school. I'm not school-less." The 5-year-old is among some 9,000 children from eight lower Manhattan schools who were sent to different schools around town. Thousands of the youngsters watched the terror unfold near their schools last week. Many of the closed schools are being used for the search and recovery effort. "I'm excited to be back," kindergartner Jason Brilliant said. "It was a long time because the World Trade Center went boom."
