Grading with Rubrics
Rubrics
are an awesome way to streamline and standardize grading practices that can be used to many things. Honestly, teaching can often be subjective as most Language Arts teachers know. If you can quantify what you are looking for in your students' work it will help them know what to expect and will help you get through their work quicker.

August 12, 2005: Summer days spent relaxing can leave kids a little "spaced out" when they return to the classroom. Perfect! They're ready for astronaut training. On Sept. 29, NASA and Ball State University will bring the experience of weightlessness into the classroom via an "electronic field trip" onboard a Boeing C-9 aircraft that NASA uses to train astronauts for the weightlessness of space. If you'd like to ride along, all you need is a high-speed internet connection (many classrooms have them) and a web browser to display the broadcast. Right: Astronauts in training onboard a reduced gravity aircraft. [

The effort begins with the "Send Wal-Mart Back to School this Summer" campaign, supported by the AFT, the AFL-CIO and other unions to educate members and the public about Wal-Mart's dismal record on employee pay, benefits, worker rights, outsourcing and more. This campaign will be launched Aug. 10 by news conferences in a number of cities across the nation. Help us send a message to Wal-Mart that it's time for one of the world's richest companies to treat its workers with dignity and respect. Please sign the pledge to buy your back-to-school supplies somewhere other than Wal-Mart this year: http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/walmart_petition Want to know more? Here are some details:
      • A Department of Labor investigation last year cited Wal-Mart for 24 violations of child labor laws, including one incident in which a minor was injured while operating a chain saw. Wal-Mart also has a record of forcing employees to work "off the clock," and the company's own 2005 annual report shows that it has faced 44 wage and hour lawsuits. In March 2005, Wal-Mart agreed to pay $11 million to settle federal allegations that it used undocumented immigrants to clean its stores. Many of the janitors worked seven days or nights a week without overtime pay or injury compensation.

    MAKING THE FIRST DAY EASIER
    • Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her memory about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a good time. Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus. If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.

  • The following questions and answers can help you to get the most out of talking to your child's teacher or with other school staff members. Q: What do I do first? Learn everything that you can about your child's school. The more you know, the easier your job as a parent will be. Ask for a school handbook. This will answer many questions that will arise over the year. If your school doesn't have a handbook, ask questions. Ask the principal and teachers, for example: What classes does the school offer? Which classes are required? What are your expectations for my child? How does the school measure student progress? Does it meet state standards? What are the school's rules and regulations? Ask about specific teaching methods and materials= are the methods based on evidence about what works best in teaching reading or math? Are the science and history textbooks up to date?

Chat transcript. Adoption Awareness for Teachers Teachers are challenged to develop sensitivity in the classroom, expanding their own awareness while encouraging their students to do the same. Resources for educators can be found in our communities, on the Web, and in books and tapes. Adoption Language The way we talk about adoption has evolved over time as we become more aware of the complexities of our relationships and the way both children and adults react to words, nuances, and connotations. How do you talk about adoption? Creative Family Trees Age-specific ways to help our children visualize and express the diversity of their families. Great for adoptive and foster families, and teachers.
