The Sunshine School for Children with Special Needs, which now has four full-time members of staff and 20 students, began over 18 years ago as a small school for deaf children, funded by the Bequia Mission of Canada. The school offers assistance to students with various disabilities, including mental and physical disabilities, hearing impairment and learning problems. Its curriculum utilises the basic Primary School curriculum, adapted for the special needs of individual children. Older students are also taught sewing and other household skills.

As an educator who works as a teacher and administrator in both a public and a private school, I frequently find myself reflecting upon both the benefits and the frustrations found in the two settings. Most of the benefits relate directly to work with students and teachers; the frustrations tend to relate to politicians, schools of education, and societal attitudes that are peripheral to what occurs daily in the classroom. When their rhetoric is analyzed, the main agenda for the politicians at all levels is the fiscal bottom line. Because the students at my private school are funded by their local school districts, that fiscal bottom line is an issue in both settings where I work. Schools of education and our society appear to struggle with the desire for a "one size fits all" approach to education, and in the process they lose sight of the question of what, in life, is the real bottom line?

From the student's perspective
1. Offer Them Help One-on-One With You.
This way this gives the student the opportunity to ask all the questions they need to be answered without feeling stupid for asking them in front of the entire class. 2. Ask Them If There Is Something You Can Do For Them To Make Understanding The Material Better For Them. This is because every student has a different way of learning different material. Some people are visual learners, some are audio learners, some are both, and the list could go on. 3. Ask Them If They Have Gone To See Academic Skills. Academic Skills is a great place where the student can go more often then they see you. They proof read essays, help with understanding where to start with an essay or assignment, they help people with time management, and so on.

High Schools That Work : Jay Mathews was online to answer questions about top-notch high schools in the Washington area. We asked readers which local high schools had impressed them and why. More than 300 people responded to The Washington Post Magazine's Back Fence Survey, nominating high schools and explaining what made them worthy of praise. Those who weighed in included parents, teachers, principals, students, alumni and community leaders.
In addition to the Back Fence responses, we talked to education experts, visited schools and examined the numbers. Then we compiled a list of 30 exceptional public and private high schools from across the region.

Finding out that your child has a medical condition can be very difficult for a family, particularly if that child is faced with surgery or a long recovery. It may be helpful to know that there are many school programs in place to help a child through this difficult time. A child may be entitled to special education services under the 1997 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504). Below is a brief outline of services that may be available for your child and the steps needed to request these services. Keep in mind that each state may have different requirements for a child to receive special education services Age Range Students from age 5 through 21 are entitled to special education services if they qualify. Some states provide services to infants and toddlers and to children ages 3 to 5. Your local school should be able to tell you if they provide services for children under age 5. Request for Referral Individualized Education Program (IEP) Section 504 Collaboration Parent Advocates Related Services Confidentiality of Information Variety of Services Available There is a wide range of possible services available. Some students stay in their general education classroom but receive small modifications to curriculum to facilitate their learning. These modifications might be as small as less homework or more time for test taking. Other students may need to be in a self-contained classroom and receive highly specialized instruction. It is important to understand the wide variety of special education services available.
