A SIMPLE CHECKLIST CAN HELP CHILDREN MAKE THE TRIP TO SCHOOL SAFELY
The ride or walk to or from school often is a child's favorite part of the day. But whether your children ride on school buses or walk to school, they face serious safety risks on the way. A child who is a smart pedestrian and bus rider can reduce chances of accidents. According to the National Safety Council, pedestrian injuries are the leading cause of preventable death for children ages 4 to 8 and about 1,300 children under the age of 15 are killed each year. Parents can follow this simple checklist developed by the Safety and Health Council of Greater Omaha to help their children get to school safely:
  • Walk your child under the age of 7 to and from school.
  • Plan safe-walking routes to school that avoid busy roadways. If possible, choose routes with crossing guards.
  • Make sure the bus stop is safe. Designate an area to wait for the school bus that is ten feet away from the road.
  • Teach your children how to properly approach a school bus. Remember that staying in the bus driver's view is essential. Stay more than 10 feet around the bus since the driver can not see in that area.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY
As students assemble on school campuses throughout Los Angeles County and school bells ring in another new school year, parents should discuss safety rules with their children, and motorists should remember to be alert for children near schools and bus stops. "Although we need to be aware all year long, we especially need to remind ourselves that school is back in session and these children and young adults will be traversing our streets, sidewalks and intersections in great numbers. We need to slow down, drive extra carefully and most importantly keep an eye on our children," said Sheriff Lee Baca in discussing back-to-school safety. If your child rides a bicycle to school, make sure he or she knows the rules of the road and follows them. Parents whose children bicycle to school, should ensure they wear a helmet and that their bicycle is working properly. Children who walk to school should always walk in groups, and parents should remind them not to take shortcuts through dirt fields or alleys. Pedestrians should cross at designated crosswalks, following the old rule of looking to the left, to the right, and to the left again before crossing the street. Extra caution should be exercised in bad weather by motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians alike.

A Checklist for Parents
  • Be sure your child knows his or her home phone number and address, your work number, the number of another trusted adult, and how to use 9-1-1 for emergencies.
  • Plan a walking route to school or the bus stop. Choose the most direct way with the fewest street crossing and intersections with crossing guards. Test the route with your child. Tell him or her to stay away from parks, vacant lots, fields, and other places where there aren't many people around.
  • Teach children - whether walking, biking, or riding the bus to school - to obey all traffic signals, signs, traffic officers, and safety patrols. Remind them to wear appropriate safety equipment and be extra careful in bad weather.
  • Make sure they walk to and from school with a friend, neighbor, brother, or sister.
  • When car pooling, deliver and pick up children as close to school as possible. Don't leave until they are in the school yard or building.
  • Teach your child never to talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from strangers. Remember, a stranger is anyone you or your children don't know well or don't trust.

Back to school - school bus safety
With the new school year underway, many children across Canada are boarding school buses for the first time to get to their destinations. Here is some safety information from Transport Canada and its partners to help kids stay safe on and around school buses.
When catching the bus, kids should:
  • Get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the school bus arrives.
  • Never run after the school bus to try to catch it if you are late.
  • Stay on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the street facing traffic.
  • Cross the street only at a corner. If there are no street corners, e.g., in a rural community, parents should show children the safest way to get to the bus stop.
  • When crossing the road, remember to look to the left, then to the right, and to the left once more before crossing. Never cross against a red light.
  • When the school bus is approaching the bus stop, take five steps back from the road.

Sheboygan Press Staff Memorial Mall will hold its annual Safety Expo from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Area agencies and organizations gather to exhibit information on safety for the family. Exhibitors include Orange Cross Ambulance, Sheboygan Police Department, American Red Cross and St. Nicholas Hospital. Parents are also prepping their kids to make it back and forth to school safely. Crossing streets carefully, wearing helmets when biking and walking in groups are common-sense tips for students. Making sure they get on the bus is another rule for Denise Stueven of Howards Grove. Stueven said she makes sure her sons, Zach, 12, and Noah, 10, make it on the bus safely. Back-to-school safety urged By Barbara Martin
Journal staff
The start of a new academic year means more young pedestrians, school buses and parent traffic mixing on sidewalks and roadways, and Stevens Point Area Public School District officials are urging parents, children and motorists to be cautious. "I don't think the concern is any greater than in any other year," said O'Meara, who also works for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. "Every year, pedestrian safety is a concern." Board member Christina Scott takes a more cautious approach. "Watch out for our kids," she said. "They'll be in a hurry, rushing to get back to school. Take your time. You'll get there." Bus safety tips * Line up facing the school bus door, not along the side of the bus. * Carry your belongings in a backpack or book bag. * Never reach under a school bus to get anything that has rolled or fallen underneath.

BACK TO SCHOOL
August 16, 1999
School superintendents: David Hornbeck from Philadelphia; Rod Paige from Houston; Kate Stetzner from Butte, Montana; and David Domenech from Fairfax County, Virginia, discuss school safety issues. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The Columbine shootings came on the heels of school killings last year in Springfield, Oregon, and Jonesboro, Arkansas, among others. In Springfield, a 15-year-old killed two students and wounded 19; and in Jonesboro, a 13- and an 11-year-old shot four classmates and a teacher. Now, we take a wider look at school safety around the country. Joining us are four public school superintendents from across the country: David Hornbeck from Philadelphia, Rod Paige from Houston, Kate Stetzner from Butte, Montana, and Daniel Domenech from Fairfax County, in Northern Virginia, outside of Washington, DC.
Rod Paige, what are you doing in Houston to improve school safety?
ROD PAIGE: First of all, we adopt an attitude that safety is important; a core value of an independent school district court is safety above all else. It didn't just begin the last couple of months, or last couple of years. It might be an attitude that goes throughout the entire structure of the organization. These add-on programs with increased security and things like that now are important, but there must be some structural part of the system that speaks to safety.

MAKING THE FIRST DAY EASIER
  • Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her memory about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a good time. Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus. If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.
