Riding the Bus School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! Even so, last year, approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries didn't occur in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Remember these safety tips:
  • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street. Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus. Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus. Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach. Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!

Walking and Biking to School Even if you don't ride in a motor vehicle, you still have to protect yourself. Because of minimal supervision, young pedestrians face a wide variety of decisions making situations and dangers while walking to and from school. Here are a few basic safety tips to follow:

Cooper San Ramon Police Department Crime Prevention Specialist The majority of traffic accidents occur close to home, and their cause usually involves driver inattention. While driving, concentrate on the road and the other vehicles sharing it with you. Do not read, put on make-up, or turn and talk to passengers, all of which cause inattention to the road. Cellular phones also cause distractions. Police agencies suggest you pull off the roadway and stop your car when using them. Talk with and instruct your school age children about the dangers of walking, riding bicycles, and driving along the streets. Bicycles should drive the same direction as motor vehicles; staying next to the right road edge, and riders under 18 years old must always wear a safety helmet. Pedestrians should walk the opposite direction as traffic, facing the traffic and wear light colored clothing during hours of darkness.

Loyola University Burn and Shock Trauma Institute, Injury Prevention Program It is hard to believe that children will be heading back to school shortly. For many people this is a time to make that last “get-away” before school starts and the warmer weather ends. New college students are preparing to leave home for the first time to start school. Whether you are traveling for pleasure or just getting to work, it is important to be aware of work zones and the difficulties they pose to the driver. They not only increase the tension on the road but not obeying the work zone signs can spell trouble for you and the workers. Break Point is produced by Loyola University, Burn and Shock Trauma Institute Injury Prevention Program. Please call us at (708) 327-2455 or email to: Kathy O'Day with any comments or questions.

Obey school zone speed limits “Drivers should exercise extra caution when driving near schools,” said Col. Dan Mosteller, Highway Patrol superintendent. The maximum speed limit when children are present when passing schools is 15 mph. Watch for children “Be aware when you’re driving around town,” said Mosteller. “It’s not unusual for school aged children to unexpectedly dart into traffic in residential areas when walking to and from school.” Watch for marked crosswalks and yield to pedestrians “Many of our schools use crossing guards to assist children cross our busy streets,” said Mosteller. “Motorists should always heed the directions of the crossing guard to ensure that all children are allowed to safely cross the street.”

Informative Web Sites Get Back to School Safely As the carefree days of summer give way to the hectic back-to-school season, parents and caregivers should take time out to teach and review important safety guidelines with children. "As children return to school, it's important for parents and children to go over safety tips together," says Jennifer McCrocklin, Austin SAFE KIDS Coalition. "This will help ensure a safe, enjoyable school year for everyone." The Austin SAFE KIDS Coalition offers these guidelines to help parents and caregivers keep children safe this back-to-school season:
School Bus Safety
About 23.5 million students ride school buses daily. Although this is one of the safest ways to travel to and from school, injuries do occur. In 1998, 21 children ages 14 and under were killed in school bus-related traffic crashes. An estimated 6,000 children were injured in school bus-related incidents. More than half of the children killed were pedestrians. Many injuries happen when children are boarding or exiting the bus. A blind spot extends about 10 feet in front of the bus, obstructing the driver's view. Children are not aware of this blind spot and might mistakenly believe that if they can see the bus, the bus driver can see them. The Austin SAFE KIDS Coalition offers these important tips for school bus safety:

Back-to-School Safety Tips
Back to school? Time for a safety check. Use this list to prevent your kids from harm at school, at home, and at play. Playgrounds
Each year, more than 200,000 kids are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for playground-associated injuries. Most of these injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment. Take a look at the surfaces of your local playground. There should be a 12-inch depth of wood chips, mulch, sand, or pea gravel, or mats made of safety-tested rubber or fiber material. (This surface will prevent possible head injuries in case a child falls.) Bike Helmets Since a growing number of kids are riding their bikes to school, make sure your kids always wear their helmets. All bike helmets manufactured or sold in the U.S. are required to meet federal safety standards. Helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent. There is one exception: Kids shouldn't wear bike helmets when playing especially on playground equipment. Back-to-School Safety Checklist
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
When you drop off your child at school, use this checklist to make sure these hidden hazards aren't waiting to cause injury or death.
  • Drawstrings on Jackets and Sweatshirts There should be no drawstrings on hoods or around the neck. Drawstrings at the waist or bottom of jackets should extend no more than three inches to prevent catching in car and school bus doors or getting caught on playground equipment.
  • Loops on Window Blind Cords Cut the loop and attach separate tassels to prevent entanglement and strangulation in window blind cords. One child a month strangles and dies in the loop of a window blind cord.
  • Bike Helmets Buy a helmet that meets one of the safety standards (U.S. CPSC, Snell, ANSI, ASTM, or Canadian), and insist that your children wear the helmet each time they ride their bikes. About 900 people, including more than 200 children, are killed annually in bicycle-related incidents, and about 60 percent of these deaths involve a head injury. More than 500,000 people are treated annually in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. Research indicates that a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent.
  • Soccer Goals Make sure that the athletic director or the custodian anchors the soccer goals into the ground so that the soccer goal will not tip over and crush a child.

Safety is Metra’s number one priority. And as another school year is upon us, Metra is once again taking a proactive approach in reminding students and parents about the importance of railroad safety. We hope to reach as many people as possible by continuing public awareness activities, and we welcome and appreciate any active involvement and support in this effort. There is a need for reinforcement of safety messages because today’s children are besieged by conflicting messages from their friends, videogames and television. Therefore it is critical to keep safety at the forefront of their minds.

    Ensuring Your Child's Safety

    (Photo: AP / CBS)
(CBS) As summer draws to a close, parents need to spend some time thinking about back-to-school safety issues.
Bob Stuber is the founder of Escape School, a group that aims to keep kids safe. He has some common-sense, no-nonsense suggestions for making the school year a safe one, and he shared some of them on The Early Show
Stuber founded the Escape School in 1997. Escape School is an all-inclusive forum on child safety and he has trained over 80 other individuals to serve as Escape School instructors throughout the U.S. and Canada. The forum deals with everything from abduction to water safety. In all situations, he promotes the reawakening of common sense.
TRAVEL TO/FROM SCHOOL There is no "right" age for kids to start walking or biking to school alone or with a friend. Each family needs to consider the maturity of their child, how many busy streets have to be crossed, if these streets have lights or crossing guards. Here are Stuber's top safety suggestions for parents:
  • Research Route to School: Parents and kids together need to map out what route to take to school, and any alternate routes. In addition to feeling comfortable with the busy streets, etc., it's very important that parents know who lives along the child's path. Megan's Law requires that any person jailed for a sexual offense and then released be "registered" in the neighborhood where they live. This is public record and parents should utilize it by visiting the police station and researching the route to school.
