Back to School Safety Tips
Riding the Bus
School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! Even so, last year, approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries didn't occur in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Remember these safety tips:
  • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.
  • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter.
  • When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus.
  • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.
  • Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach.
  • Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!

For most of the year, children spend more time at school than anywhere else other than their own home. At school, children need a secure, positive, and comfortable environment to help them learn. Overall, schools are one of the safest places children can be. However, some schools have problems, such as bullying and theft, which make them less secure. These problems make students and educators feel less safe, and it makes it harder for students to learn and for teachers to do their jobs. There are simple ways to make schools a safer place. If students, parents, teachers, administrators, law enforcement, and community members work together, they can solve these problems. Visit the web pages below to find out more about school safety and ways to make schools safer. Back To School Safety
As children are now back in school, it is important to help them get to and from school safely. Be sure to observe the speed limits in school zones and supervise your children on their way to and from school. Before you leave your child at home alone after school, you should make sure that he feels safe and comfortable and can handle the responsibility. Most children are not ready to be left alone until they are at least eleven or twelve years old, but it will depend on your child's maturity level. You may want to gradually let him stay home alone for very short times to make sure he is ready. Some things to review before you leave your child home alone include:
    • Make sure that he is comfortable being home alone.

With the thermometer hovering at the hundred-degree mark, it is difficult to think about school days ahead, and the hustle-bustle of packed lunches, homework, and special events. On August 15, the 2005-2006 school year will begin and we will once more start the school year routine.
Though we might have become lax with menus, bedtimes, and noticing school zones, we must again be extra diligent. In addition to the many vehicles and school buses needed to transport Garland’s school children, many more of our little ones will be walking to school this year, some for the first time.
The City of Garland school crossing guards crossed a record number of over 5500 children safely each day this last school year and expect that number to grow even more in the new school year.
Please be reminded of the following laws. School zone speed limit is 20 miles per hour when the lights are flashing. In elementary school zones, the times are 6:55am – 8:10am and 2:55pm – 4:00pm. (These times might vary somewhat due to particular school needs.) Be observant of all speed limits and do not pass any school bus that is stopped with the lights flashing.
Parking restrictions adjacent to schools are provided to facilitate movement of the many vehicles converging to drop off and pick up students. Obedience to the parking laws and a little patience will stave off traffic delays.

    (301) 504-0580 Ext. 1219 WASHINGTON, D.C. - As millions of children head back to school, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is helping parents, teachers, and caregivers look for hidden hazards to help prevent injuries and deaths to children. CPSC's "Back to School Safety Checklist" offers tips on making schools, child care facilities and playgrounds safer. "Take a few minutes to check your child's school, childcare facility and playground for hidden hazards we don't always think about during this busy time of year," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "Use our free checklist to make sure your children head back to school safely." The free "Back to School Safety Checklist" is available on CPSC's web site at www.cpsc.gov or by sending a postcard to CPSC, Washington DC 20207. Hidden hazards include the following:
