What we have to say
Creating a supportive school community
A low socioeconomic, culturally diverse secondary school community talks about increasing student ownership, participation, support and safety. Junior secondary students Jason: Shiloh: There's a boy from my class and if he went home and told his mum, his mum would have probably rung up the school and the kids would have heard about it. So you get called a sissy because you told your mum and your mum has to deal with it. And if you fight back it makes it worse. Jason: And some people just put up with it [because] they think that if they tell someone, that they'll get in trouble themselves. Iona: There's stuff happening here that's good and it's making a difference. The senior students did a survey. We got asked what we'd like changed in the school and the kids voted for the toilets and lunch areas being improved and more things we can do if we get picked on. And we're getting that. top Senior secondary students Cathy: Philippe: We, some of the leaders, went to this leadership course with motivational speakers. It was to help leaders get a plan of what we wanted to do in the school.

12 Things Students Can Do To Stop School Violence
... Michigan Safe Schools Initiative MAKING SAFER SCHOOLS
When crime, drugs, and violence spill over from the streets into the schools, providing a safe learning environment becomes increasingly difficult. More students carry weapons for protection. Gunfights replace fistfights. Many students must travel through gang turf or groups of drug dealers. Violence becomes an acceptable way to settle conflicts When this happens, children cannot learn and teachers cannot teach. Creating a safe place where children can learn and grow depends on a partnership among students, parents, teachers, and other community institutions to prevent school violence.
  • Find out how crime threatens schools in your community.
  • Take actions to protect children.
  • Promote nonviolent ways to manage conflict.
How do these ideas translate into action? Here are some practical suggestions for young people, parents, school staff, and others in the community.

Purpose The goals of Team Nutrition include providing healthful foods in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs and promoting healthful food choices by students. Using bulletin boards can help to reinforce these goals. Whether you think of yourself as “creative,” this book is designed to
  • spark the imagination and creativity of cafeteria managers and teachers; give ideas, using inexpensive and innovative materials, to use to make bulletin boards visually exciting; help you to succeed in making bulletin boards that attract and communicate; provide Learning Activities that link the classroom to the cafeteria.
Importance
Bulletin boards can be major teaching assets in your classroom or cafeteria. Creating exciting bulletin boards can brighten up your entire classroom or cafeteria, stimulating students, and calling attention to topics you want to highlight. Colorful and creative bulletin boards can provide timely nutrition messages for all students with minimum effort. Taking time not only to prepare a quality bulletin board, but also to store it properly is worthwhile. It then can be used for several years and will save time for the manager or teacher. A section listing the major mechanics of creating displays is found under the heading Bulletin Board Briefs. Topics include how to copy illustrations with an overhead projector, planning, color, and other related techniques.

Quote this post Author: 5959 May 28, 2005 , 6:55 PM (PDT) I usually send my 3-year-old to preschool with a few slices of ham or turkey, some kind of fruit (banana, strawberries, raisins, or individual servings of peaches or applesauce), bagel chips or crackers (he doesn't like bread), and a little treat. Personally, unless your child is really really good with the thermos, I'd go with cold lunches for awhile. The teacher will have enough on her hands without having to deal with a thermos!

Make School Lunches Fun and Nutritious
As the beginning of the school year nears, parents once again face the challenge of preparing healthy lunches and snacks that their kids will actually eat. After all, you can send your child to school with a well-balanced lunch a home-ec teacher would be proud of, but if he trades his carrot sticks for a cupcake, all your efforts go down the drain.
What parents need are ways to make healthy food fun for kids to eat. And since September is not only back-to-school month, but also 'five-a-day' month (in honor of the FDA recommendation that everyone eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day), what better time to incorporate these foods into your family'sdiet.
Every parent knows that some foods are more popular with kids than others. For example, most kids like bananas, but may not be so sure about papaya. While you want your child to try new tastes, their lunch box probably isn't the place for that. Keeping kids' taste buds in mind, here are some tips from the Produce Marketing Association for fun, healthy ways to help your kids get their 5 a Day.

Irradiation isn't an Alternative to Clean Food!

Louis Clark is executive director of the Government Accountability Project . GAP focuses on protecting federal employees who "blow the whistle" on wrongful actions by their employers. Recently, a trial balloon to compromise food safety crashed to earth within 24 hours of its send-up by the United States Department of Agriculture. Its cargo a proposal to cut back on salmonella testing of ground beef destined for public schools might as well have been lead, for how it went over in the marketplace of ideas on food safety.
The USDA also signaled its intent to buy irradiated ground beef for the public school lunch program without informing students or parents when it is served. That trial balloon still floats, but is sinking. Various groups have formed to fight the proposal, based on a potpourri of objections ranging from food safety concerns to potential civil liberties violations in public schools.
The meat industry had pushed for both proposals. It views salmonella testing on meat for public school lunches as an onerous burden, even though most fast food restaurants currently require such testing. As for irradiated meat, the industry has seen irradiation as a solution to disease-causing bacteria in meat; but the reluctance of the public to knowingly consume irradiated products has severely curtailed the market for them. Opening the vast federal school lunch program to irradiated food will simultaneously open up new markets and help foster broader acceptance of this form of meat processing.

Issue 1 September 2003 Alopecia – a Hair-Raising Problem for Women
In the United States and many other areas of the world, beautiful hair is a source of pride and admiration. Many of us invest a lot of time and money in the color, style, and care of our hair. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the appearance of our hair can often affect our feelings of confidence and self-esteem. The AAD reports that when people get older, the rate of hair growth slows down. When most men approach middle age, hair thinning and hair loss is generally accepted as an unpleasant but normal part of the aging process. "Hair today, gone tomorrow" may be an amusing pun, but for women with alopecia, it’s no laughing matter. A Funny Word, not a Funny Situation According to the AAD, alopecia is the term for common hair loss in both men and women. Hair loss for men typically occurs above the forehead and on the top of the head, and is referred to as "male pattern baldness." Hair loss for women begins as a gradual thinning on the top of the head, progressing toward the forehead. Women do not go completely bald, but the scalp often becomes visible through the thinning hair. Medscape Women’s Health eJournal reports that alopecia in women is more common than we think, and that excessive hair loss can be psychologically devastating to some women. Many women do not report it to their doctors and try to treat the problem cosmetically, by styling their hair to cover the thinning areas.

Scripps Howard News Service How did this happen? One minute we're all enjoying summer, and the next minute it's back to school. You know what that means: It's time once again to start packing the dreaded lunch. But, said Karen Erickson, a Denver home economist and mother of four, with a little imagination, packing lunch can be more pleasure than chronic pain. "To make it interesting for me, I try to come up with something fun and balanced," she said. The payoff can be huge. "It's fun when Peter comes home from school and says, 'Wow,' or 'Mom, I really liked the tuna without the bread.' That makes me feel like it's worthwhile." Erickson has two school-age children: Peter, 7, and 5-year-old Luke, who is just entering kindergarten. If you really want to know what's going on with lunch, she said, volunteer in the school lunchroom. "It's eye-opening," she said. "It helped me see what other kids were bringing."

cafeterias chock-full of candy? Are America 's children being forced to choose between low-grade processed food or sugar-laden junk food at school? Is the onslaught of preservatives, sweeteners and processed food in schools the reason why American children are fatter than ever? In this month's Back-to-School Feature Article, we're looking at School Lunch – what the National School Lunch Program offers, what Junk Food Manufacturers now have the privilege of offering, and how some communities are taking school lunch into their own hands. Read on to find out more about the state of school lunches today and how the new sustainable food trend is sweeping the country. What exactly is School Lunch? Children who buy lunch at school are most likely participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), a federally assisted meal program that began in 1946, and is now operating in more than 99,800 schools (out of 119,235 elementary and secondary schools, public and private) and residential child care institutions
