    165. George Seldes On Tobacco
The scientific studies on the health effects of tobacco go back to 1938, but few papers were running stories about it their leading advertisers were the tobacco companies. George Seldes (18901995) was an exception; a set of his tobacco stories from 1940 to 1950 is reprinted here.

George Seldes on Tobacco: Fifty Years Ahead of His Time More than 50 articles from Seldes's newsletter In fact
    Introduction
Stanton Glantz, in his milestone book The Cigarette Papers, writes, "During the early 1950s scientists began to publish scientific studies suggesting that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and other diseases." He goes on to write, "These results... were widely reported in newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times, Reader's Digest, and Life." Professor Glantz whose health-and-tobacco-industry work has been consistently outstanding is inaccurate here on two accounts: 1) The scientific studies were published as far back as 1938 and continued to flourish throughout the 1940s, and 2) The first studies were most decidedly NOT widely reported (perhaps explaining Glantz's first error). Which brings us to George Seldes. Seldes was a noted foreign correspondent in the 1920s turned press critic in the 1930s. His books such as Freedom of the Press (1935) and Lords of the Press (1938) told how America's press catered to Big Money at the expense of the general welfare. In 1940, Seldes began publishing In fact, a 4-page newsletter devoted to press criticism and investigative reporting. He sub-titled the weekly "An Antidote to Falsehoods in the Daily Press."

Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and sports are one approach many people choose to get their exercise. For people with back pain, sports can still be a viable option if they pay attention to their back. For others, knowing the type of strain sports place on the back may help prevent a back injury. This article gives specific information about sports injuries and back pain from bicycling, weight lifting, running, swimming, skiing, golf and tennis. Up to 20% of all injuries that occur in sports involve the lower back or neck. Sports that use repetitive impact (e.g., running) or weight loading at the end of a range-of-motion (e.g., weightlifting) commonly cause damage to the

Fit, Healthy, and Ready to Learn: A School Health Policy Guide
The National Association of State Boards of Education and many state and local policymakers nationwide are convinced that good school health programs play a crucial supporting role to excellence in education. School health programs can help ensure that students are fit, healthy, and ready to learn every day.
The Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) asked NASBE to help states, districts, and schools develop policies that would help prevent long-term chronic diseases. The resulting policy guide complements CDC's school health guidelines , which provide state-of-the-art, scientifically reliable information on what constitutes effective school health programs. CDC also asked the National School Boards Association (NSBA) to expand its existing school health policy database to include materials and examples of actual district policies that address these topics. Both NASBE and NSBA can provide technical assistance on school health issues to state and local policymakers and administrators.

(CNN) In the 1990's, Billy Blanks burst onto the consumer fitness scene with a high-energy cardiovascular form of exercise he called Tae Bo. The classes featured a blend of martial arts-inspired moves like kicking and punching set to music. Soon gyms from coast-to-coast were offering their own version of the workouts. But just like any other consumer trend, club-style martial arts classes soon became old hat as the popularity pendulum swung in the direction of more mellow forms of exercise like yoga and pilates. Now it's time for Round 2 as Blanks, and other instructors, kick and punch their way back into the ring with some interesting variations on old moves. Home fitness enthusiasts will also be able to indulge their desire to kick and punch their way fit with the new "fusion-style" exercise videos hitting stores just in time for the holidays.

Study: Medium mattress may be best for back pain
Story Tools RELATED Pain at work costs billions Lancet journal HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library Back pain Pain management YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Back pain Medicines or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? LONDON, England (AP) Contrary to popular belief, a firm mattress may not necessarily be best for the back, new research suggests. Doctors have traditionally recommended hard beds for people with lower-back pain, but that advice has been based on scarce evidence. Now the first substantial study has found that people who slept on medium mattresses were twice as likely to report an improvement as people using firm ones. Experts said the study, published this week in The Lancet medical journal, doesn't mean everyone would benefit from a medium mattress, and that trial and error is still the best way to choose. Anyway, there are no standardized gauges for the firmness of a mattress. "This has been very poorly studied in the past," said Dr. Scott D. Boden, professor of orthopedics and director of the Emory Spine Center at Emory University in Atlanta. "Clearly mattresses can make a difference for individuals, but the question remains whether or not there's one formula that's going to work for everyone."
