INTRODUCTION Medical education at Brown is characterized by its breadth, flexibility, and opportunities for personal enrichment and advanced scholarship. Brown Medical School awards approximately 80 Doctor of Medicine degrees each year. Most of the basic sciences are taught on the University campus while most clinical teaching is hospital-based or community-based. Clinical department chairpersons are based either on campus or in one of the affiliated teaching hospitals. For the first time in 20 years, Brown is opening admission to qualified graduates of any college or university. Previously students could only enter through the avenues described above. These students will by joined by matriculants from a standard route of
admission starting with the class entering in September 2005.

These teaching aids can be reviewed in this print version of the Navigator, as well as on a companion CD or a more detailed on-line version. Throughout the year, additional materials will be added to the KLVX Educational Media Center They will appear on-line immediately and will be listed in the quarterly ITV newsletter. Service to K-12 schools is a major element of our educational mission. Since 1995, our library of curriculum-correlated media from PBS and other sources has grown from 3,975 to over 22,000 items. Last year, teachers accessed over 92,000 program titles broadcast over closed circuit channels, received 18,800 school deliveries of non-broadcast media, and requested over 79,000 videotape or CD program duplications. If the videotapes we duplicated last year for teachers were stacked in a single pile, it would rise 6,583 feet – standing more than 5 1/2 times the height of the Stratosphere Tower As a professional educator, I hope you take personal pride in the changes KLVX has made to serve you better.

Anyone who attends The Glasgow School of Art for three months or more automatically becomes a member of GSA Alumni. You will join over 5,000 former students and graduates of the School and, long after you have gone your separate ways, we can assist you in organising reunions and events - helping you to keep in touch with your fellow students across the world. The Glasgow School of Art prides itself on the success of its students and alumni and does not want those achievements to go unnoticed. We look forward to sharing in your news and accomplishments and hope that many of you will help us to provide careers advice, placements and mentoring to current students and assist with recruitment - at home and overseas. As former students you are the School's greatest advocates and can, in many ways, make a valuable contribution to your alma mater.

general education courses may be taken in high school or college. Of course there will be some red tape when you go back to school.

    One Life or Nine?
    What does that mean?
General education courses may be taken in high school or college. They may be aimed to interest the average student or to challenge the most competent and advanced student. They are planned to be as complete as possible in themselves, so that the student who takes no further work in the field will understand the essentials and their relationship to his own life and environment. They will broaden his intellectual horizon and make him more effective as a citizen, a worker, a member of a home and family group, and as an individual.
    The role of guidance
Of course, Pvt. Jones can get a lot from these and other everyday sources. He probably will learn a great deal that way all his life. But the information from such sources usually comes to him in a haphazard, incomplete, and unrelated manner. Real knowledge and understanding have to be acquired in a systematic way. can he learn the truth? The job of the schools is to promote and direct learning as effectively as possible. They aim to show the student how and where he can-learn more about any given subject. They aim to sharpen his critical abilities so that he can distinguish the false from the true. Courses are organized so that each step leads naturally to the next one. Arithmetic is taught before algebra, for instance, and algebra before trigonometry.
