Creating a Butterfly Garden

Host Plants
Butterfly gardening involves planning your garden to attract, retain, and encourage butterfly populations. A sample garden plan is shown in Figure 1, and a list of host plants is given in Table 3 and Table 4 . Flowers of similar colors grouped together are more attractive to both butterflies and the gardener. You should select a variety of nectar-producing plants with the aim of providing flowers in bloom throughout the season. This will entice a continuous succession of new visitors to a yard. It is especially important to have flowers in mid to late summer, when most butterflies are active. Flowers with multiple florets that produce abundant nectar are ideal. Annuals are wonderful butterfly plants because they bloom continuously through the season, providing a steady supply of nectar. Perennial plants, such as coneflowers, lilac, butterfly weed, and asters, are visited regularly by butterflies. Most plants in the mint family are also good nectar sources for butterflies. Avoid double flowers because they are often bred for showiness, not nectar production. For successful butterfly gardening, you need to provide food for more than the adult butterflies. You need to provide for their caterpillar forms as well. Butterfly caterpillars have a limited host range (See

    Scary Strange Sound
motherhood Sometimes, the kid just scare the shit out of me when I least expected to see her, especially when I thought she was already sleeping. I was quite sure that she was soundly asleep, because she didn't stir at all when I opened the creaking door. So off I went into the toilet to relieve myself, well, have painfully hold on to the urgent nature's call just because the kid hasn't fallen asleep.
When you thought you are the only person awake in the house, then started to hear funny noises coming from the living room, like someone was searching something from a pile of books, it was kind of spine-chilling. Then came the creaking sound from the door. The bedroom door has been pushed open and footsteps was heard walking towards you. Well, I was totally terrified and hate to see a burglar or some strange beings appear in front of me.
Of course, that strange being always turned out to be Yauyau. Damn, why wouldn't she just make some familiar noises, like calling out mama or just cry loudly like she always does, instead of making my heart lost a beat again. Posted by hait on 4 comments trackback

When working with errors of inborn metabolism, healthcare professionals have to take into consideration very specific recommendations and knowledge. Such is the case when dealing with food recommendations for individuals with galactosemia. Treating infants with galactosemia requires the initiation of a diet restricted in galactose. For years, health professionals believed and instructed individuals with galactosemia to avoid consuming lactose-containing foods and beverages and only items containing lactose, as the assumption was that free galactose was not found in foods and bound galactose was not bioavailable. In more recent years, it has become apparent that more research is needed in the area of therapy for people with galactosemia because there have been many negative long-term effects in children treated for galactosemia who were following the standard recommendations.

The Cantonese social custom of a late-morning weekend brunch with tea and savory snacks is less a peaceful dining experience than the culinary equivalent of NASCAR. This is dim sum, baby: women and men ferrying steam carts groaning with pastries through narrow aisles. Customers flagging down said servers, pointing at and gobbling up the objects of their desires from those carts. The din and clatter of shouts and plates and the occasional collision of carts. About every five minutes, another phalanx of women and men zooms out of the kitchen, another table empties of eaters, and another hostess seats another group of dozens who have waited impatiently for their brunch of bedlam.
There are no quiet moments during dim sum hour, and at Irvine China Garden, the pandemonium is such that the waiting line extends to the parking lot. But people wait. Irvine’s sizable Chinese community fills the place every weekend, passing on such Orange County dim sum standbys as Sam Woo and Dragon Phoenix in favor of the county’s best. It’s not just the quality of the food—China Garden is in one of Irvine’s two Chinatowns, and many families visit the nearby bakeries, banks and supermarkets after a meal. But the main attraction is that chaos, that racket, that madness that makes for a true dim sum experience.

We called it “closing the deal.” I would nurse and rock and nurse and rock, but Conor wouldn’t quiet down enough to put him in the crib. I’d call Dave over the baby monitor and he’d come in, we’d tag off, and within 3 minutes the child would be down for the night. No longer. Now, I rock and nurse and rock and nurse which doesn’t take as long as it did once we realized that a walk around the block in the jog stroller helps calm the little one down. I can easily get him into the crib. For about 10 seconds. Then he cries, and I rock and nurse and rock and nurse, and he goes down. Protesting. I call in Dave and they rock and cry and rock and cry until the baby’s cries escalate into screaming. And then I’m back on duty as the one who rocks and nurses for just a few minutes and he is completely down.

    Data through November 18, 2004
    Most Recent Data
    Data through May 27, 2004

    Data through April 28, 2004
    Background
During investigations relating to review of a petition for the use of irradiation in certain foods, FDA scientists identified the substance furan in a number of foods that undergo heat treatment, such as canned and jarred foods. The presence of furan is a potential concern because, based on high-dose animal tests, furan is considered possibly carcinogenic to humans. FDA has developed a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method to measure furan levels in food, which is posted on FDA's website at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/pestadd.html#furan . FDA also issued a Federal Register Notice (May 10, 2004), requesting data and information from the public on furan in food and furan toxicology, and brought the topic of furan to its Food Advisory Committee on June 8, 2004.
    The data
FDA is now posting furan data that were collected through November 18, 2004. Data are presented in chronological order with data collected between June 10, 2004 and November 18, 2004 presented in Table 3. FDA previously posted exploratory furan data collected through April 28, 2004, and through May 27, 2004, which are found in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. We are presenting these data to inform the public of FDA's progress and to help stimulate research into the formation of furan in food. The results reflect furan levels detected in samples of individual food products.

Parents increasingly aware of the harmful substances that may be present in commercial baby foods are opting for organic brands, writes Anna Burnside. "Ga ga ga." This is Nina, my daughter, eagerly anticipating her pasta stars. They are organic, ready in about seven minutes, and go down without touching the sides. Sometimes I make a sauce, sometimes I open a jar. I can't count how often they have saved both our lives. Deciding what to feed a child is just one of the many sweat-provoking decisions that a parent (usually a mother) has to make. And while most adults may not like the idea of eating fruit sprayed with pesticides and fungicides, genetically modified tomato purée or intensively reared chickens, busy lives get in the way. But if we weaken at Burger King or reach for a frozen pizza, at least it's our choice. Babies are different. They sit captive in their highchairs, watching a yoghurt come out of the fridge, waving their arms about in excitement. As a parent you have total control over what your child eats. And that is a frightening responsibility. The more I hear about conventionally produced food, the less I want Nina to eat it. Whether it's carrots with residues of five toxic chemicals, including organophosphates; apples treated with a frightening cocktail of fungicides, pesticides, herbicides and growth-regulators; battery chickens fed on powerful antibiotics and growth-promoters; or just milk from miserable cows which contains persistent traces of the insecticide lindane, this is not what I want for my baby.

It is little more than a stone's throw from downtown, a means of measure quite appropriate for the volunteers digging, weeding and discarding rocks from the painstakingly created soil that covers the sunny backyard of the Vancouver Energy Information Centre. Here, beautifully illustrated signs identify plants and techniques for gardeners who pass by a cold frame, a large so-lar greenhouse, a three-bin composting system and 30 raised beds filled with healthy vegetables. Occasionally, a train clangs by almost close enough to touch, overwhelming all the other city sounds and reminding the gardeners that not long ago, this little chunk of Eden was not much better suited to growing food than the railway siding next to it. The garden began to take shape on a warm fall Sunday in 1981, when 11 people met in the backyard of the newly opened centre at Maple Street and Sixth Avenue, overlooking the Burrard Bridge, which spans False Creek and leads to downtown Vancouver. Their spirits high, the volunteers marked the proposed boundaries of the beds and then lunged at the earth with their garden tools like so many horticultural break dancers. After 10 minutes, only one sturdy soul with a pickaxe was left chipping at the cement-like ground. A chemical smell brought the rest of the dejected gardeners to their knees. Was it machine oil, paint thinner or something worse? No one could be sure. Neighbours said that the previous tenants had fixed their trucks in the yard and dumped waste liquids there.
