    The Ancient History of Chocolate
During the early years of the sixteenth century, the Aztecs developed a strong civilization in the area that is now central Mexico. There are a lot of people that believe that the Aztecs first established chocolate, but the unraveling goes back much further. The ancient Mayans, who once upon a time, occupied southern Mexico and parts of Central Mexico, are believed to be the discoverers of chocolate. Even more, the word "cacao" just so happens to be of Mayan origin. Way back during 500 AD, Mayans wrote about cacao on their pottery. Back then, chocolate was consumed as a pungent foamy beverage. The beverage was then made with wine, water, vanilla, and an assortment of spices. It was thought to cure diarrhea and other things. King Carlos I of Spain, called it "xocoatl", meaning "a drink that builds up resistance and fights fatigue." Drinking chocolate, before it was sweetened, was a luxury. It was even described as a terrible tasting drink, but yet, still desirable.

and The Ancient History of Basketball
The Aztecs of Mexico, although not very tall, invented back in the 16th century what we know as basketball today. They named their game ollamalitzli. The game was played by trying to put a solid rubber ball through a stone ring placed high at one end of the court. Unlike today, they had no rules. It was brutal. You could kick, hit, gouge, pull hair, trip, and anything else you can think of to your opponents. A score of one point won the game. The winning team was rewarded by getting to take the clothes and jewelry right off the spectator's backs. (Duh? Why go to the game?)
The captain of the defeated team got it worse. His head was cut off. Recently archaeologists learnt about the Aztec games of ollamalitzli. Up until now, James Naismith had been considered the man who invented basketball. And at the time he did, he had never even heard of the Aztec's ollamalitzli version. So he is considered by many to be the inventor of Modern American Basketball as we know it today. And here is a kinder, gentler version of how it all began. James Naismith a PE (Physical Education) instructor at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass. Today that is Springfield College. He was also the newest and youngest teacher there. One very cold December day in 1891 he went to the school's gymnasium where he found two of his other PE teachers not too happy. It seems the school's president had TOLD them to come up with a game that students could play inside on cold days. The teachers were not doing too well with coming up with something that was inside and physical (not like chess or something).

    The Post-Classic Period (900-1521 AD) - Part 2
    The Aztecs
By the 13th century the entire region, then called the Valley of Anahuac, was occupied by assorted rival city-states. Among the last to arrive on the scene was the nomadic tribe of the Mexica (pronounced may-SHEE-ka), more commonly known as the Aztecs, who ended a long migration from their northern homeland, Aztlan, by settling in the Valley marshlands. The Aztecs considered themselves the chosen people of the sun and war god Huitzilopochtli. After coming upon an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a snake, a sign foretold in ancient tribal prophecy, the Aztecs founded Tenochtitlan, their capital, on an island in Lake Texcoco. They sustained themselves there for half a century by acting as mercenaries for the mighty Tepanecs of Azcapotzalco, but eventually rose up against their rulers, effectively seizing power over the valley. Tenochtitlan soon became the capital city of a vast empire, a magnificent metropolis graced by great canals, colorful markets places and temples galore. It was inhabited by highly organized society, ruled by a king and dominated by a noble class of priests and tax collectors, a warrior elite and an active, vital merchant class. The state engaged in war with other states for two express purposes: to exact tribute for maintaining the society and to capture prisoners for sacrifice to the gods. According to Aztec belief, their world existed under the fifth sun, four previous ones having been destroyed by various cataclysms. Thus a chief mission of the culture was to keep the sun rising, a task accomplished by appeasing Huitzilopoctli with abundant offerings of human hearts. Following the calendar systems adopted from earlier civilizations and keeping a watchful eye on the heavens, the Aztecs held a dizzying array of religious observations in honor of their many gods, the Plumed Serpent Quetzalcoatl and the rain god Tlaloc, being among the most important.

Chocolate treasures from ancient civilizations to today
January 31, 1997 (CNN) Craved, savored and given as a symbol of one's love. Yet, so common it can be purchased for 50 cents. This treasured, as well as commonplace item is chocolate. Originally consumed as a spicy drink, chocolate can be traced back to the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations in Mexico, Central and South America where the Theobroma cacao tree, or cocoa tree, grows wild in tropical rain forests. Solid chocolate as we know it today wasn't created until the late 1800's in Europe. Hundreds of years before the Europeans got into the act, the Mayans and the Aztecs treasured the cacao beans, or later to be called cocoa, for both their value as an ingredient for their special drink and as a currency. Their drink was made from ground cocoa beans. Since sugar was unknown to the Aztecs, they flavored the ground beans with spices, chili peppers and corn meal. Some say it was frothed and eaten with a spoon. The Aztec emperor, Montezuma, was said to drink chocolate that was thick as honey and dyed red.

  • Paper #047146 :: How to Present the Study of Ancient History - Buy and instantly download this paper now Oral presentation on how best to study ancient history in America. 1,651 words, 6 sources, APA, $ 54.95 USD Paper Summary: From the Paper: "I, however, think that a chronological study of history is most effective for a number of reasons. Firstly, time, not geography, is the basis for how civilizations develop. In other words, almost every civilization has been influenced by one of the past, regardless of how different in scope they are. For example, the United States' primary influence was that of Colonial England, but it does not end there. Colonial England has influences that date back to the times of Rome, and maybe even Ancient China. Civilizations, no matter what the time period, were not formed within a vacuum-they all had influences, whether directly or indirectly. For that reason, it is best to analyze history through time, and through the developments of the human race as a whole. By examining the entire history of man, we can put the regional developments into context."
