of Azerbaijan Background:
Azerbaijan - a nation of Turkic Muslims - has been an independent republic since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a cease-fire, in place since 1994, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated). Azerbaijan has lost almost 20% of its territory and must support some 750,000 refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of the conflict.
Corruption is ubiquitous and the promise of widespread wealth from Azerbaijan's undeveloped petroleum resources remains largely unfulfilled.

Located on the southern edge of the Caucusus, and bordered by Russia , Armenia, Georgia, Iran , and the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan has a population of 7.5 million. The majority of its inhabitants are Turkish speaking Shiite Muslims , as well as Armenians and Christian Lezgins. Approximately 25,000 Jews live in the country.

Early History
Jews have lived in Azerbaijan for centuries and can be divided into two groups: Ashkenazi and Jews of Persian origin. Ashkenazim settled in Azerbaijan in the 19th century during a Czarist Russian attempt to infuse Russian culture into the region. Other Ashkenazim came to Azerbaijan during World War II to escape the Nazis . The Persian Jews, also known as Caucasian Mountain Jews, can be traced to Azerbaijan from before the 5th century. Their history is more than 2,000 years long and Azerbaijan has historically been very welcoming toward them. Mountain Jews have lived in Caucasia for centuries and are said to be descendents of the Lost Tribes that left Israel after the destruction of the First Temple , in 587 BC. Their ancestors inhabited southern Azerbaijan, now the northwestern part of Iran, where they adopted the

Azerbaijan Society Power organs ... Media Azerbaijan Musavat Party's appeal to world media We call your attention to the statement by the opposition Musavat Party issued on the threshold of trials against Azerbaijan opposition leaders: 14 trials constituted against the criminal case related to the 15-16 October events have recently come to the end. 118 persons have been sentenced to illegal imprisonment, 33 of which have been sentenced to three through six year- term of imprisonment and 85 have been released under suspended sentence respectively. At the same time, no judgment for a defendant has been declared so far. No legal actions have been taken against the persons acting on part of plaintiffs and whose names defendants have submitted to court. Moreover, no comprehensive investigations are carried out to find a guilty side in the death of Mr Zahidov. All these disgraceful facts once more reveal the essence of the court system and prove that it functions at the order of the ruling regime. Therefore, by appealing to the world leading media outlets, we would like to ask to support the publication of such event, which is sure to become an important page in Azerbaijan's history and the dissemination of this information to both - local and world community. Your concern and attention would be tremendous support to the fight of Azerbaijan democracy that continues its activity through pressure and acts of repression.

http://www.electionworld.org/history/azerbaijan.htm
Present-day Azerbaijan is ruled by Persia since earlier than the first century BC. In the seventh century the area is conquered by the Caliphate . Foreign occupation seizes to exist around 837, but in the eleventh century the area becomes part of Georgia . In 1235 it is conquered by the Mongols . Around 1500 the Azerbaijani tribes form the Sefewide state. In 1555 the region is annexed by Persia . Due to its location astride the trade routes connecting Europe to Central Asia and the Near East and on the shore of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan is fought over by Russia, Persia and the Ottomans for several centuries. Finally Russia splits Azerbaijan's territory with Persia in 1828 by the Treaty of Turkmenchay, establishing the present frontiers and extinguishing the last native dynasties of local Azerbaijani khans. At the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917, the independent democratic People's Republic of Azerbaijan is proclaimed in 1918 following an abortive attempt to establish a Transcaucasian Republic with Armenia and Georgia. Prime ministers are Fath Ali Khan Khoiski (1918-1919) and Nasibbey Yusifbeyli (1919-1920) of the Turkic Party of Federalists-Musavat (Turkic Party of Federalist-Equality, TPM). This independence is supported by Turkey and the United Kingdom. Azerbaijan received de facto recognition by the Allies as an independent nation in 1920, an independence terminated by the arrival of the Red Army later that year. This brings the communist to power, who establish the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic

Above: Famous Tabrizi kufta (meatball) with herbs such as tarragon, chives, cilantro, mashed yellow peas, rice and a variety of spices. The stuffing inside is composed o f dried fruits such as sour cherries, prunes, walnuts and almonds mixed with fried onion and a hard-boiled egg. A kufta can be large enough to have a whole chicken stuffed inside. The bread, sangak, is torn into pieces, soaked in the kufta broth and eaten with turshu (relishes), Prepared by Pari Abadi, Tabriz, specifically for Azerbaijan International. Photo: Khanlou

Psychologists have long been fascinated with the problem of whether it is heredity or rather environment that plays the greater role in the development of the human species. Numerous studies have focused on identical twins who were separated at birth and grew up under different circumstances. In a sense, Azerbaijanis are like that. Figuratively speaking, they've been separated from their identical twin and brought up under entirely different policies and circumstances, which have influenced their social, political, economic and religious outlook and upbringing. These differences, in turn, have even impacted the food they eat.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Azerbaijan was one territory comprised of khanates and ruled locally under the jurisdiction of the Persian Empire (known at the time as the Union of Gajar States). Conflict broke out between Czarist Russia and Persia. Two wars followed upon each other in short succession. Persia was defeated and forced to cede considerable territory to Russia in treaties signed at Gulistan (1813) and Turkmanchai (1828).

Azerbaijan was the first republic of former USSR that faced the problem of refugees started in 1988. According to the official information, on January 25, 1988 several hundreds ethnic Azeris were forced to leave the city of Kafan in republic of Armenia because of mass anti-Azeris pogroms, which were organized by the Armenian supporters of Armenian separatist movement in Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) of Azerbaijan. Since February of 1988, after start of the mass disorders and separatist demonstrations of Armenians in NKAO, the first forcibly displaced persons (DP) appeared in Azerbaijan. First among them were Azeris from the city of Stepanakert (Khankendi). They were followed by Armenians displaced from the city Sumgait and Shusha. Part of Armenian population of Sumgait was evacuated at that time to Armenia , which started the migration wave from Azerbaijan. In winter of 1988, the eviction of Azeri population from Armenia reached a mass proportion, with deportations organized by local authorities. The peak took place in November-December of 1988. During the next year practically all Azeris left Armenia. Last Azeri village in Armenia (Nuvedy in Megry region of Armenia) was populated by Azeris until spring of 1991.
