HISTORY OF THE CARPETS.
Carpet weaving is one of the oldest and most popular forms of art in Azerbaijan, and is so highly developed that the usual Western distinctions between the fine arts and the decorativc arts simply do not apply. The traditional skills of this art have been handed down from one generation of weavers to another for many centuries, and the visual language they employ in their carpetsthe motifs and the coloursforms an essential part of the culturc of Azerbaijan, and seems able to speak to Azeris of every background, whether simple or sophisticated.
Weavers of earlier cenhlries, whose names have been forgotten, produced magnificent carpets and textiles that are now in the collections of the world's greatest museums: the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, Topkapi Sarayi in Istanbul, and many others. Baku also has a museum of textile art, located in the centre of the city.
Early geographers and historians have left valuab]e accounts of the sophistication of carpet weaving in Azerbaijan, and of the esteem in which Azeri carpets were held by neighbouring peoples. The famous 10th-century Arab historians al-Tabari and al-Muqaddasi both remarked that splendid carpets were made in the Azeri town of Barda. The folk epic Dada Gorgud, created during the 11th and 12th centuries, gave special praise to the purple carpets of Azerbaijan, while in the 13th century, Azeri carpets were admired by the Flemish traveller and missionary Guillaume de Ruysbroeck as well as by the Venetian merchant and explorer Marco Polo. Two centuries later, Azeri carpets appear in the paintings of European artists including Hans Holbein the Younger and Hans Memling. Records of luxurious Azeri carpets are also found in the journals of the English traveller Anthony Jenkills in thc 16th century, and of the Dutch seafarer Jan Struys in the 17th century.

The project will take place in October and involve all ASCP schools, during which the initiative participants will create an appeal to the world, suggesting their views on resolving universal challenges. These types of projects are the beginnings of civil society in Azerbaijan which sits in a delicate balance. Continuing to support such exchanges, could be what Azerbaijani parents, teachers and students need to organize themselves for developing problem solving strategies. ASCP Students in Ganja Learn Proverbs Online Finally the project participants created an online proverb dictionary, containing explanations and equivalents of more than forty both Azeri and English proverbs and adages. The resource will be placed at Ganja School #2 website, available at: http://mekteb2.sayt.ws

H i s t o r y o f K a m a n c h a A stringed instrument that is played with a bow, the kamancha is found among Eastern and Central Asian peoples under variety of names. The kamancha plays as important a role in an Azerbaijani folk ensemble as the violin does in an orchestra. Early kamanchas found in Azerbaijan were made of pumpkin and nutmeg wood and decorated with ivory. The one-stringed and two-stringed kamanchas are thought to be descendents of the ancient Azerbaijani gopuz played with a bow.
The kamancha appears in medieval Azerbaijani literature as well as traditional painted miniatures. The medieval musical analyst, Abdul Qadir Maraghai, specifically mentioned the kamancha among other instruments of the period. The poet Nizami (1141-1209) of Ganja, a town in North Western Azerbaijan, also mentioned the kamancha in his famous epic “Khosrov and Shirin.” One of the most famous members of the 16th century Tabriz school of miniatures, Mir Saeed Ali, depicts the kamancha among other instruments in his miniatures (see left).

Azerbaijan combines the heritage of two venerable civilizationsthe Seljuk Turks of the 11th century and the ancient Persians. Its name is thought to be derived from the Persian phrase "Land of Fire," referring both to its petroleum deposits, known since ancient times, and to its status as a former center of the Zoroastrian faith. The Azerbaijani Republic borders the Iranian provinces of East and West Azerbaijan, although they have not been united into a single state in modern times. Little is known about Azerbaijan's history until its conquest and conversion to Islam by the Arabs in 642 AD. Centuries of prosperity as a province of the Muslim caliphate followed. After the decline of the Arab Empire, Azerbaijan was ravaged during the Mongol invasions but regained prosperity in the 13th-15th centuries under the Mongol II-Khans, the native Shirvan Shahs, and under Persia's Safavid Dynasty. Due to its location astride the trade routes connecting Europe to Central Asia and the Near East and on the shore of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan was fought over by Russia, Persia, and the Ottomans for several centuries. Finally the Russians split Azerbaijan's territory with Persia in 1828 by the Treaty of Turkmenchay, establishing the present frontiers and extinguishing the last native dynasties of local Azerbaijani khans. The beginning of modern exploitation of the oil fields in the 1870s led to a period of unprecedented prosperity and growth in the years before World War I.

    History
The Republic of Azerbaijan comprises the Transcaucasian or northern part of the historic region called Azerbaijan. Known to the ancients as Albania, the area was linked to the history of Armenia and Persia , particularly after its conquest (4th cent.) by Shapur II. Overrun later by Mongols, it was divided after the fall (15th cent.) of Timur into several principalities (notably Shirvan). The territory of the present Azerbaijan was acquired by Russia from Persia through the treaties of Gulistan (1813) and Turkamanchai (1828). Soon after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Russian Azerbaijan joined Armenia and Georgia to form the anti-Bolshevik Transcaucasian Federation. After its dissolution (May, 1918), Azerbaijan proclaimed itself independent but was conquered by the Red Army in 1920 and made into a Soviet republic. In 1922, Azerbaijan joined the USSR as a member of the Transcaucasian Soviet Federated Republic. With the administrative reorganization of 1936, it became a separate republic. Immediately after World War II, Azerbaijan was used as a base for Communist rebels in Iranian Azerbaijan; Azeri nationalists still press claims to Iran's Azerbaijan province. Azerbaijan declared itself independent of the USSR in Aug., 1991, and became a member of the

Political turmoil characterized the first years of Azerbaijani independence. President Ayaz Mutalibov was forced to resign in March 1992 after he was held directly responsible for the death of several hundred Azeris killed by Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh, the primarily Armenian enclave claimed by Armenia. After Mutalibov resigned, the interim president, Yagub Mamedov, was unable to control the political situation. The Azerbaijani Popular Front (APF) attempted to take over local administrations, and Mutalibov made an aborted attempt to regain power. With the support of military units, the APF seized control in a nearly bloodless coup in May 1992. After the coup, the Supreme Soviet (the Soviet-era legislature) was dissolved and replaced by a 50-member National Council, or Milli Majlis, which had been established in November 1991.
In early 1994 Azerbaijan launched a renewed offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh, but gained little territory. As many as 10,000 Azeris were killed in the fighting. After the failure of a March cease-fire, the National Assembly called for intervention by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which sent a peacekeeping force of mostly Russian troops to the region. Fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh continued until August, when defense ministers from Armenia and Azerbaijan again agreed to a cease-fire.

Azerbaijan Introduction Azerbaijan Background: Azerbaijan - a nation with a Turkic and majority-Muslim population - regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a 1994 cease-fire, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated). Azerbaijan has lost 16% of its territory and must support some 800,000 refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict. Corruption is ubiquitous and the promise of widespread wealth from Azerbaijan's undeveloped petroleum resources remains largely unfulfilled. Back to Azerbaijan Society Although Azerbaijan's history shows the mark of substantial religious and cultural influence from Iran, linguistically and ethnically the country is predominantly Turkic. The republic was part of the Soviet Union for seventy years, but Russian culture had only incidental impact.
    Language
The official language is Azerbaijani, a Turkic tongue belonging to the southern branch of the Altaic languages. In 1994 it was estimated that some 82 percent of Azerbaijan's citizens speak Azerbaijani as their first language. In addition, 38 percent of Azerbaijanis speak Russian fluently to accommodate Russian domination of the economy and politics. Although official Soviet figures showed that about 32 percent of Russians living in Azerbaijan spoke Azerbaijani, the Russian population generally was reluctant to learn the local language. Most Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh use Russian rather than Azerbaijani as their second language. The Azerbaijani language is part of the Oghuz, or Western Turkic, group of Turkic languages, together with Anatolian Turkish (spoken in Turkey) and Turkmen (spoken in Turkmenistan). The Oghuz tribes of Central Asia spoke this precursor language between the seventh and eleventh centuries. The three descendent languages share common linguistic features. Dialectical differences between Azerbaijani and Anatolian Turkish have been attributed to Mongolian and Turkic influences. Despite these differences, Anatolian Turkish speakers and Azerbaijanis can often understand one another if they speak carefully. Spoken Azerbaijani includes several dialects. Since the nineteenth century, Russian loanwords (particularly technical terms) and grammatical and lexical structures have entered the Azerbaijani language in Russian-controlled Azerbaijan, as have Persian words in Iranian Azerbaijan. The resulting variants remain mutually intelligible, however.
