There are plentiful of proves that the area of former Irevan khanate (kingdom) ( Armenian Republic at present ) were populated mostly by Azeris in the past. If we just consider the 19 century, not even earlier... With the help of Russians, who were tried to establish their control over Caucasus by means of the massive relocation of Armenians from the Turkish and Persian empires to the Causasus, the ethnic population of these lands started to getting change. These initiatives of Russians were explicitly documented in the Gulistan ( Treaty of Gulistan 12.10.1813 (Russo-Persian War 1804-13 ) and Turkmanchay (1928) peace accords. Later these actions of forceful expel of the local Azeris out and settle of the Armenians in, were described in many Russian sources. The creation of Armenian Republic had taken place only when the communists came to a power in the Russian Empire, then forming the Armenian Republic from the lands of former Irevan khanate and territories ( Goyche and Zangezur ) which were transferred to Armenia from Azerbaijan Democratic Republic ( ADR ) by sordid acts of Soviet Bolsheviks. Apparently not fully satisfied with ethnic cleansing of Azeris in the past, Armenians, again with the help of Russians ( in the form of the Soviet Union this time ), have continued of the ethnic cleansing of former Azeri lands by expelling more than 250.000 Azeris from various parts of Armenian Republic soon after World War II. Another forceful flow of Azeris ( more 200.000 ) from Armenia occurred during Upper Karabakh ( also known in the West in a ugly misspelled name of "Nagorno-Karabakh" ) conflict in 90's.

Azerbaijan or Azerbeijan (Azerbaijani: Azerbaycan, Azerbeycan) is a historical country and territory situated in a crossroads between Eastern Europe and western Asia , adjacent to the Caspian Sea . The heritage, culture and civilization of Azerbaijan is amongst the richest and most ancient, and the history of this land and its people is thousands of years old. The people of Azerbaijan are the heirs of ancient civilizations such as Sumer Elam Aratta Urartu ... Media and Caucasian Albania and are the descendants of various bodies of Turkic peoples, especially the Oghuz Turks who, in the tenth century, set the national foundation of modern Azerbaijan. The borders of post-Islamic and modern Azerbaijan start at Derbent (present-day southern Russia) and end in Hamedan (present-day western Iran In the early 19th century, Azerbaijan was separated in half following wars fought between Russia and Iran. The Russians annexed the northern parts of Azerbaijan, amid expansion into the Caucaus and Turkic-Islamic lands in Central Asia. Following the treaty of Turkmenchay signed in February 1828, Azerbaijan was divided along the Araz river, a physical barrier that has divided the land politically up until now. The land north of the Araz river coincides with the modern Republic of Azerbaijan, including its enclave, the autonomous republic of Nakhchivan; and the land south of the Araz is referred to as South Azerbaijan (Ardebil province, East Azerbaijan province, West Azerbaijan province and Zanjan province), and is under the administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The majority of these embroideries, inaccurately known as the product of Iranian art, have drawn attention due to their rich Turkish field terminology along with the data which fill in gaps within the history of art of Turkish embroidery. Our aim here, is to introduce a number of embroidery works, not recognised in the Republic of Turkey, of the 19th-20th centuries exhibited at the Baku Azerbaijan Halça and Public Practical Arts State Museum, the Azerbaijan History Museum and the Azerbaijan Fine Arts Museum where research and reviews were held in 1996, an opportunity provided by Gazi University and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. The findings with regard to the Azerbaijan embroidery go back to the Bronze Age.Our evidence on this issue are the pins, beads and metal plaquesi

Azerbaijan History People have been living in Azerbaijan for at least 3000 years, but scientists think it has been inhabited for much longer than that. In the 9th century BC, Scythians settled in the area later joined by the Medes, followers of Zoroastrianism. Two hundred years later, half of the country was taken over by the Archaemenid Persians, but were only captivated in 330 BC by the Greeks. The Romans began to control the area in the first century AD, but didn't last to the 4th century during which the Persians began to gain power. By the 11th century the Arabs were in control, but Seljuk Turks, giving them the foundation of modern Azerbaijan, displaced them. The country really enjoyed a cultural renaissance, beginning in about 1050, which produced many of Azerbaijan's best architectural and artistic achievements. A riot between Russia, Turkey, and Persia ended in 1813 when Russian and Persia split Azerbaijan along the Aras River. While Russia was ruling Azerbaijan, its economy grew in relation to Russia's. Azerbaijan supplied the Soviet Union with crude oil, chemicals, textiles, food and wine. Although Azerbaijan's petroleum supply dropped during its time as a Soviet supplier, Azerbaijan continued to be a bounteous producer of crude oil and textiles throughout the 20th century. From 1918 to 1920, Azerbaijan was nearly independent, but in 1922, it was stuck into a "federate republic" with Armenia and Georgia. The independent province, Nagorno-Karabakh was created by the USSR in 1922. This province was virtually all Armenian, and placed under Azeri rule. Although in 1936, the Soviets dissolved the federated republic, they held the three republics within its orbit.

    History of Azerbaijan
History of Azerbaijan . This is an interesting and well written essay on the history of Azerbaijan.
    From the site:
Azerbaijan combines the heritage of two venerable civilizationsthe Seljuk Turks of the 11th century and the ancient Persians. Its name is thought to be derived from the Persian phrase "Land of Fire," referring both to its petroleum deposits, known since ancient times, and to its status as a former center of the Zoroastrian faith. The Azerbaijani Republic borders the Iranian provinces of East and West Azerbaijan, although they have not been united into a single state in modern times.
Little is known about Azerbaijan's history until its conquest and conversion to Islam by the Arabs in 642 AD. Centuries of prosperity as a province of the Muslim caliphate followed. After the decline of the Arab Empire, Azerbaijan was ravaged during the Mongol invasions but regained prosperity in the 13th-15th centuries under the Mongol II-Khans, the native Shirvan Shahs, and under Persia's Safavid Dynasty.

      History
      Background
      1. Money turnover within Azerbaijan

History of Azerbaijan statehood goes beyond the ancient times. One of the factors proving ancient Azerbaijan statehood is discovery of local coins, which were minted in Albania (Caucasus Albania) and Atropatena, which existed within Azerbaijan. First money found within Azerbaijan are related to the times of Alexander of Macedonia (Alexander). As early as the second half of the III century B.C. albans and atropatenians, which were involved in world trade, to meet the demand of internal market began to mint coins similar to imported coins of Alexander. Silver dirhams (drahmas), with “AT” and “ATR” monograms related to this and later periods (numismatists read them as Atropat and Atropatena) have been widely discovered in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Dagestan. Scientists suppose that such coins were minted at mints in Gabala, Ardabil and other cities. At the same time circulation of money similar to silver coins of Selevki in Albania encounters in II-I centuries B.C.
At the second half of the III century most part of the Azerbaijan territory was invaded by the Sasanids empire. Along with this already in VI-VII centuries Sasani rulers minted their silver coins in Nakhchivan. But at that period the Arabian Khilafet, which defeated Sasanids, conquered Azerbaijan as well. At the initial period of Khilafet history (VII-IX centuries) money circulation, especially minting of golden and copper coins were centralized. At the same time silver coins of the Khilafet were also minted in Azerbaijan.

The capital of Azerbaijan, Baku is located on the western shore of the Caspian Sea and is one of Azerbaijan's largest cities. The center of Baku is the old town, which is also a fortress. Most of the walls, strengthened afterthe Russian conquest in 1806, survive. This section is picturesque, with its maze of narrow alleys and ancient buildings. Part of a palace, a mosque, and a minaret date from the 11th century. Modern Baku spreads out from the walls, its streets and buildings rising up hills that rim the Bay of Baku. Greater Baku is divided into 11 districts and 48 townships. Among these are townships on islands in the bay and one island built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Baku proper.

Although Azerbaijan has traditionally relied on imports for its raw materials, much of them from the former Soviet republics, its industrial sector is well diversified with a production capacity able to sustain a steady export program. In 1991, the Azerbaijan food industry, with 31 percent of total industrial output, led all industrial production, followed by light industry (19 percent), energy (12 percent), and machine-building industry (II percent). Wine production dominates the food industry of Azerbaijan, accounting for almost 50 percent of this market's share. Production of textiles (accounting for 13 percent of all " industrial output), carpets, leather products, as well as toys, furniture and bicycles, constitute the bulk of Azerbaijan's light industry. The machine building industry (other than oil equip ment) produces equipment mainly for agriculture, road construction, light industry and the food industry.

    Ancient Empires
Several ancient tribes inhabited the land of Azerbaijan, and some areas became known after these tribes: Caspian, Mannai, Media and Caucasian Albania. Some of the states that emerged in the area from the 3rd millennium BC were powerful and quite advanced, specially the Mannai and the Medes. The Medes invaded the kingdom of the Mannai in the Xth century BC. The Medes, an ancient Indo-European people, ancestors of the modern Kurds, eventually built their empire, Media, stretching as far west as Cappadocia. By the 8th century BC Media was raided and settled - but not defeated - by the Scynthians, coming from the banks of the Black sea. In 550 BC the king of the Medes, Astyages, was defeated and imprisoned by his grandson Cyrus II the Great, and the region was first integrated into the Persian empire. This mighty state reached from the Caspian to the Indian ocean. Only the Greeks resisted the power of Persia, and defeated first Darius I at Marathon and then his son Xerxes I at Salamina and Plateias. By the 4th century BC they reached Azerbaijan, under Alexander the Great , who defeated Darius III at Isso, Granic and Erbil, and later reached the heart of the Persian empire, destroying Persepolis itself. The king of minor Media, Atropat, seized this moment to proclaim his country's independence. The lands north of the Araz river were called Atropatene, after him. (while most popular story regarding the origin of the name Azerbaijan traces it to the Persian word for fire 'azer', another version derives the name from Atropatene). After Alexander's death his empire fragmented and Azerbaijan was integrated in the area controlled by one of his generals: Seleucus. He ruled over the Persian empire and founded the Seleucid dynasty.

In terms of remembering their own history, Azerbaijanis are suffering from a collective case of amnesia - but much of it really isn't their own fault. Throughout 70 years of Soviet rule, Azerbaijani history was twisted and manipulated to suit the needs of the Communist regime. Today it is extremely frustrating and difficult to track down even basic information related to specific names, dates or figures - especially if they relate to pre-Soviet eras like the turn-of-the-century Oil Boom and Azerbaijan's brief period of independence (1918-1920). Even earlier eras have been completely distorted.
I believe that someday a comprehensive, objective, non-ideological history of Azerbaijan will be written, but not today. It will take time to cultivate a culture of calm, rational scientific debate. Science must be free of ideology.
Azerbaijani historians are now sorting through the confusion, working to unravel the threads and clues deliberately squelched by "historians" of the Soviet era. Here Farid Alakbarov leads us through the specifics of how Azerbaijani history is being rewritten, now that it no longer has to be viewed through the lens of Soviet ideology.
