Nothing from history speaks to us quite so profoundly as the human voice itself. Reading handwritten pages of thumb-worn diaries or looking at faces in a photo albums may be revealing, but there's something much more immediate and personal about listening to the sound of a person's voice. Recordings of the voices of many famous Azerbaijanis are housed at the Azerbaijan Republic State Voice Recording Archive, including those of composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov (1885-1948), Tabrizi poet Shahriyar (1907-1987) and the founder of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, Mammad Amin Rasulzade (1884-1955). Also included in the archive's 50,000 - plus audio recordings are well-known khanande [traditional singers] from the early 20th century. Here Yagub Madatov, Director of the Voice Recording Archive, explains how he and his staff have put together this unique archive as a way of preserving historic recordings for future generations.

ART AND CULTURE
Monumentsof architecture and art of Azerbaijan reflect the history of the country located on thejunction of world trade ways linking up East and West.
Rock paintings in Gobustan depicting scenes of work, everyday life, ritualsgo back to the 7-8 millenniums B.C. Remains of pre-historic housing, materials of excavations and burials are indicative of rich artistic culture of Eneolithic and early Bronze epochs. Foothills of Minor Caucasus, Nakhchivan, primarily northern regions of Azerbaijan are represented by metal, plastic, ceramic and glass articles . and vessels. Remains of Kabala, fortressChirag-Gala(6 century), as well as cult structures, including Basilica temple in the village of Kum and round temple (5-6 centuries, lime-stoneand burnt brick), survived to our days.
The Arab conquest of the 7 century and spreading of Islam accounted for the emergence of new types of structures (mosques, minarets, madrasa, mausoleums), also, lack of pictures of men and animals predetermined the development of ornamental formsof decorative art.

Culture and Traditions National Holidays Silk Road ... Tourism in Azerbaijan
Culture and Traditions Culture, Education, Science The original national culture of Azerbaijan goes back into centuries and has absorbed the best traditions of East and West. Azerbaijan literature is represented by such luminaries as Nizami Ganjavi, the peak of whose creative activity "Khamsa" is included in the treasure-house of world literature, Afzalladin Khagani, Mehseti Ganjavi, Mohammed Fizuli, Molla Panah Vagif, Khur-shud-banu Natavan - their lyrics have acquired world acknowledgment, the dramatist and thinker Mirza Fatali Akhundov, and the satirists Sabir, Jalil Mammadkuluzade. Azerbaijan gave the world a great theorist of music, Safiatdin Urmovi, who created a new note system. His world famous "Treatise on Music" written in the 13th century has become a handbook of musicologists of many generations. Azerbaijan has always taken pride in its masters of fine and applied arts. The works of Bakhrus Kenderli, the master of the miniature, the colorful canvases of Sattar Baklulzade, and the paintings of Tahir Salakhov decorate museums and art galleries of the world. The Azerbaijan art of carpetry, being universally recognized, has the deep roots. The Golden fund of world mastery art owns the names of Jabbar Garyagdi, Bul-Bul, Rashid Beybudov, Vagif Mustafazade and others.

Language, Religion, and Culture
Although Azerbaijan's history shows the mark of substantial religious and cultural influence from Iran, linguistically and ethnically the country is predominantly Turkic. The republic was part of the Soviet Union for seventy years, but Russian culture had only incidental impact.
Language
The official language is Azerbaijani, a Turkic tongue belonging to the southern branch of the Altaic languages. In 1994 it was estimated that some 82 percent of Azerbaijan's citizens speak Azerbaijani as their first language. In addition, 38 percent of Azerbaijanis speak Russian fluently to accommodate Russian domination of the economy and politics. Although official Soviet figures showed that about 32 percent of Russians living in Azerbaijan spoke Azerbaijani, the Russian population generally was reluctant to learn the local language. Most Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh use Russian rather than Azerbaijani as their second language. The Azerbaijani language is part of the Oghuz, or Western Turkic, group of Turkic languages, together with Anatolian Turkish (spoken in Turkey) and Turkmen (spoken in Turkmenistan). The Oghuz tribes of Central Asia spoke this precursor language between the seventh and eleventh centuries. The three descendent languages share common linguistic features. Dialectical differences between Azerbaijani and Anatolian Turkish have been attributed to Mongolian and Turkic influences. Despite these differences, Anatolian Turkish speakers and Azerbaijanis can often understand one another if they speak carefully. Spoken Azerbaijani includes several dialects. Since the nineteenth century, Russian loanwords (particularly technical terms) and grammatical and lexical structures have entered the Azerbaijani language in Russian-controlled Azerbaijan, as have Persian words in Iranian Azerbaijan. The resulting variants remain mutually intelligible, however.

Music Librettos Biography ... Store Vagif Samadoghlu speaking: I quite well remember the last time I ever saw Uzeyir Hajibeyov. I was a child of about eight or nine years old. It was in Yesuntuki in the Northern Caucasus, several months before he passed away [November 23, 1948]. Uzeyir bey was in a sanatorium there. He suffered from gastritis, colitis and diabetes. My father, Samad Vurghun [the well known poet], took my older brother Yusif, my sister Aybaniz and me there and introduced us to him. We were all sitting together. My father told us to go and kiss Uzeyir bey's hand, according to Eastern tradition. Yusif kissed his hand and then Aybaniz did the same. When I kissed his hand, Uzeyir bey put his hand on my head and ruffled my kinky, curly hair. I've witnessed a total of three mass funeral processions in Azerbaijan during my lifetime. The first one was in 1948 when Uzeyir Hajibeyov died. The second took place when my own father Samad Vurghun, passed away in 1956. The third one was the funeral procession for Black January 1990, after Soviet tanks entered Baku and killed hundreds of civilians.

'Restoring' Azerbaijan's Christian History - Without the Armenians
By Felix Corley BAKU, Azerbaijan"Many Azerbaijanis believe that Jesus was Russian or Armenian," one Baku Protestantan ethnic Azeritells me. "The problem has been that there has been no information." Azerbaijan's Christian converts have to be careful. Constantly branded as "traitors" by the media and the more nationalist and Islamist fringe of the political spectrum, they frequently alsoand potentially more dangerouslyface charges of being Armenian agents. Any evidence that they have had even the slightest contact with Armenians immediately puts them on the danger list. During a police raid several years back on an unregistered Baptist church near Baku, an Armenian children's Bible was discovered. The Baptists told me it had been sent from abroad years ago and had lain unused in a storeroom because there were no Armenians left to give it to. But this was enough to dredge up charges that they were Armenian agents. Christians from another church in Baku had studied in a Bible college in America. When the press discovered that some Armenians had also studied in the same college, all hell broke loose. The church spent a long time countering ridiculous claims that they were in the pay of the Armenian secret services.
