Printable Version Cite this Page John Oliver's character has much to do with the loyalty of his men. In Griffin, characters often seem expressly created to generate admiration, charm, perhaps a little raffishness, but seldom disdain or disgust. Griffin' s major characters may often be drawn in one dimension, but those single dimensions still have considerable texture. General Bob Bellmon, for example, is a man whose first and foremost concern is for the Army and Duty. Yet Griffin takes us inside Bellmon's mind, and we watch him mull over the development as an officer and future leader of John Oliver. Oliver is somewhat...

Also known as
Joseph of Copertino; the Gaper (derogatory term from his childhood); the Flying Friar; Joseph Desa

18 September
Profile
Joseph's father , Felice Desa was a poor carpenter who died before the boy was born. Creditors drove his mother , Francesca Panara, from her home, and Joseph was born in a stable. Starting at age eight, he received ecstatic visions that left him gaping and staring into space. He had a hot temper, which his strict mother worked to overcome.
Apprenticed
to a shoemaker . At age 17 Joseph applied for admittance to the Friars Minor Conventuals, but was refused due to his lack of education. He applied to the Capuchins, was accepted as a lay-brother in , but his ecstasies made him unsuitable for work, and he was dismissed. Abused by his family, he continued his prayers, and was accepted as an oblate at the Franciscan convent near Cupertino. His virtues were such that he became a cleric at 22, a priest at 25. Joseph still had little education, could barely read or write, but received such a gift of spiritual knowledge and discernment that he could solve intricate questions.
His life became a series of visions and ecstasies , which could be triggered any time or place by the sound of a church bell , church music, the mention of the name of God or of the Blessed Virgin or of a saint, any event in the life of Christ, the sacred Passion, a holy picture, the thought of the glory in heaven, etc. Yelling, beating, pinching, burning, piercing with needles - none of this would bring him from his trances, but he would return to the world on hearing the voice of his superior in the order. He would often

Naval Aviators Claim the Night
By Linda D. Kozaryn
American Forces Press Service ABOARD THE USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT When F-14 Tomcat and F-18 Hornet pilots don night vision goggles and catapult from the deck of this 97,000-ton, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, they claim they own the night. "When you put those goggles on, night becomes day," said Rear Adm. W. Winston Copeland Jr. "You can see more on a clear night with goggles than you can in the daytime. It's phenomenal. When you put them on, the clarity is amazing. We feel like we own the night it's ours." The admiral knows exactly how it is. The carrier commander nicknamed "Mad Dog," is a veteran fighter pilot. He said he earned the moniker "doing things he shouldn't of been doing" during training. Copeland has flown over 300 combat missions, made 1,200 arrested landings and logged 4,800 flight hours in 30 types of aircraft, including the F-14, F-15, F-16, YF-17 and F-18. He proudly notes that the first F-14 ever made is still among the Teddy Roosevelt's combat air wing. During NATO Operation Allied Force, Copeland and his 5,000- member battle group launched more than 3,000 sorties, including about 1,700 strike missions. Naval and Marine aviators took off from the floating, 1,000-foot-long flight deck in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas to link up with ground-based U.S. Air Force and NATO planes to strike Yugoslav military targets in Kosovo.
